Are you or a loved one a beginner to the Flute ? Welcome and Congratulations !

of my nearly 4 decade career in Classical Music, I have crafted a teaching style that
minimizes practice time, maximizes progress and allows my students, ages 7 through
adult, to have fun while practicing.

I began my music education wanting to be a recitalist and orchestral player but my
career goals changed when I started teaching flute and saw how my students
needed to have a more solid direction than what they were experiencing.
I realized, largely due to Conservatory training in the art of teaching private
flute lessons, that I had the insights into helping them achieve their aspirations
to play the flute.

The secret lies in removing excess physical movements on the flute and any emotional /
intellectual preconceptions. Then, the percentage of practice time perspiration will
diminish dramatically.

Michelangelo, famously said, “The sculpture is already inside the rock, all you have to do
is remove the excess stone”.

All of this applies to learning the Flute. If you don’t get in touch with yourself and your
Creative Spirit, it will never happen but implement the correct procedures in the proper
order, then only the sky will be your limit. That is what my Flute teaching method is
really about. Developing your “technical style” in such a way that your technique
becomes effortless, uniquely yours and then....your musicality will have the tools to

It is all based on the Japanese Principal of Kaizen. “Gradual but Continual Improvement
by Taking Something Apart and Putting it Back Together in a Better Way.”

There are THREE distinct levels of self-mastery to Flute Technique and several areas of
specific skills within each level. I Explore Each One Separately and Then Combine Them
All Into One Truly Integrated Technique.

Learn the best way to align the head joint with where “your” upper lip and lower jaw
should be positioned because if you don’t, your progress will slow down dramatically.

Discover how online flute lessons actually open up your capacity to learn new flute
skills faster than with “in person” lessons.

About Julie O.

“I want you to learn the one set of critical beginner finger techniques “Without the Flute” that will allow you to play fluently for years to come.”

Julie has perfected the art of providing appropriately challenging material so every student can learn how to practice effectively while providing an education of the student's entire person.

One of her more recent former students who Julie taught from the age of 7 through 17 submitted an audition recording to Brandeis University and was awarded the
prestigious and sought after Leonard Bernstein Fellowship award.

Her education and teaching style on Flute is a result of earning Associate and Bachelor Degrees in Applied Music as well as doing graduate work at the Eastman School of
Music. She also spearheaded organizing recitals for adults, a structured “Master Class” type rehearsal program and wrote her own transcriptions for flute Choir to include strings and voice all within a Community Music Program.

As principal Flutist with various chamber groups through the years, she was also most notably asked to perform in recitals for advanced students at the Eastman School
of music, a Memorial Scholarship concert for excellence in Flute performance at the Crane School of Music commemorating professor emeritus Don MacDonald as well as performing in a Master class with Peter Lloyd, Former principal Flutist of the London Philharmonic held at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

She plays a Muramatsu GS-7 Series solid silver heavy wall flute with 5 microns of 14 karat rose gold bonded to the exterior and interior of the flute. An instrument no longer in production.

Her head joint was custom made for her by legendary flute maker Jack Goosman and is 9 karat solid gold with a 14 karat solid gold lip plate and chimney. One of only two of its kind and the other one is owned by famous flutist James Galway.

Regarding Julie’s lessons, she does not teach 30 minute lessons due to that duration not allowing enough student progress to be made in such a short time. She does offer the opportunity for student lessons to take place, on a limited basis, during evening and/or weekend hours for those times where scheduling conflicts arise.

Reserve your spot for lessons with Julie soon as time slots are filling up quickly !

Her 90 minute lessons include a 5 minute intermission if needed.

Julie is a fabulous teacher! She gets to know each student as an individual, and tailors their lessons to the way they learn best. Students have input into the pieces they work on, and the students work on a variety of pieces to develop different skills with each piece. Julie taught my daughter flute from 5th grade (45 minute lessons) through her high school graduation and remotely in college (1+ hour lessons). Julie was not only her teacher and mentor, but became a cherished “member” of our family. My daughter would work hard, because she had such an incredible bond with Julie. Julie developed my daughter’s flute skills far beyond her grade level. By high school my daughter was first chair in Hochstein’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, Eastman’s Flute Choir, and other select groups. As a teacher, Julie went above and beyond to help my daughter succeed, while still understanding the needs of a student juggling multiple priorities. Julie's experience in teaching took my daughter from a 9 year old beginner flutist through preparing successful auditions for college scholarships. Julie knew every audition / performance piece my daughter ever used, and knew exactly how to prepare my daughter so she could give a professional quality performance / audition. As a teacher, Julie is what every parent wishes for, and the only teacher your student will ever need, regardless of their age or experience.
