I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast currently living in Boston, MA! I hold degrees in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington, and recently completed my Fulbright year at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply focused and deliberate work! I therefore create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and practice methods into each lesson, so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English (my mother is Japanese) and received a Japanese minor in 2015 from the University of Washington. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students of all ages! Students will work out of the Genki I, Genki II, and the Tobira textbooks. Japanese lessons focus on reading and writing the three alphabets, vocabulary memorization, and speaking standard (formal and informal) Japanese at the conversational level. Students are additionally encouraged to research cultural aspects about Japan to supplement their language development.

Mona was very professional and well prepared for our first lesson. We got right to the meat of the subject and I learned a lot in only a single session. She adapted the pace and the content of the lesson to match my pace of learning which is very much appreciated. I look forward to learning more!

Mona has been working with my 11- year old daughter for several months now. She is very professional, reliable and punctual.....but most of all, she makes learning Japanese fun!!
My daughter looks forward to Japanese class every week with Mona, and is enjoying the learning process.
I can't say enough, how easy and efficient it is for me to work with Mona, especially being a Busy Working Mother.

Terrific first lesson. Almost immediate improvement in tone thanks to a few simple, easy to remember cues. Stretching exercises and body stance were emphasized as a foundation to build for quality sound as well as care to prevent injury.
I almost can't wait for my next lesson.

Mona knows what she's doing and is very kind. Not only are the links that she sends you during the lesson helpful but she explains when you'd use the words and helps you understand the appropriate situations for when you use them. She is very friendly and a wonderful teacher that will listen to your questions and answer them and her answers are never halfhearted. I completely would recommend her as a Japanese tutor/Instructor if you wish to learn how to speak and write Japanese while still having that relaxing environment.
