I believe that the most important aspect of learning is a positive and comfortable environment that encourages and facilitates growth! My studio ranges from ages 9 to adult and from beginner to advanced.

Through my own studies I have experienced many different teaching styles and philosophies, and have developed my own method to help my students progress quickly and efficiently.

Every lesson will begin with a discussion about the students practicing so that we can celebrate growth and work together through challenges.

Students will be asked to study technical and tone exercises as well as repertoire that will help them progress in the necessary areas. I will help my students choose pieces that are appropriate and enjoyable.

If a student would like to study a popular song then I will gladly write my own arrangement for them. We can also learn to play by ear and improvise.

For my online students I will record solos, duets, and piano parts to pieces that we cannot play ...

I have been a flute teacher for forty years with many outstanding and nationally award-winning students but Kasumi stands out among my favorite students and performers.

I was so lucky to have Kasumi start in 6th grade and continue through high school with me. Along the way she picked up many awards through the Seattle Flute Society, the Seattle Young Artists, and the Seattle Youth Symphony where she was first chair in every orchestra. Her high school career culminated in being selected to attend the very prestigious Eastman School of Music with a very generous scholarship.

Kasumi has a sparkly personality and that sparkle shines in her playing. Building on a solid musical and technical base she adds her own distinctive ideas and nuances to create a personal performance.

Having been part of the creative team to produce The United States Army Field Band Flute Fundamentals DVD, Kasumi is well equipped to teach beginners who have never opened a flute case to serious students hoping for a musical career- and to make it fun!
Dhivya K.
Kasumi has been a colleague of mine since our time together at Eastman. Her knowledge of flute pedagogy and technique is impressive and she plays with warmth and clarity. However, it is her enthusiasm, kindness, and patience that make her a joy to work with, both for students and colleagues. I would highly recommend Kasumi to anyone considering flute lessons!
Pamela D.
I couldn't recommend Kasumi highly enough! I have known and worked with her for 10 years, from being in the same class at the Eastman School of Music to now working together in the US Army Field Band. She is extremely professional and always easy to work with. Anyone would be lucky to work with her!!

"Our daughter has taken flute lessons from Sue for 3 years. These private lessons have provided our daughter with an excellent musical foundation and allowed her to develop skill in playing the flute. Sue has been very flexible in scheduling (when our busy schedule creates conflict). Most importantly, Sue has been supportive and relaxed in her teaching style to allow our very shy daughter to feel comfortable and confident in the lessons."

"Frannie Brodeur has our highest recommendation. Frannie has been teaching our son since he was 7 and thanks to her expert guidance he is, at 15, preparing to audition for Juilliard in a few years. Frannie understands how to work with children and teens: our son always feels encouraged not squashed, respected and appreciated rather than criticized. After 8 years, he still looks forward eagerly to his lessons. Frannie is unfailingly sensitive, patient, and humorous, and it's very clear she enjoys kids. Frannie is also a remarkable flutist, and our son aspires to her gorgeous sound. As a professional musician, Frannie is able to meet students at whatever their skill level."
