About Kareem
A native of the Pacific Northwest, saxophonist Kareem K is a performer, composer, and educator, who is in high demand for his talents both on and off the stage.

Growing up in the northwest with its vibrant music scene allowed Kareem the opportunity to study with, listen to and perform with world class jazz artists residing in the area. Artists such as Tracy Knoop, Jay Thomas, Don Lanphere, Bill Ramsay, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester and many others had a large impact on Kareem early in his musical education. This direction and guidance continues to inspire and lead Kareem as he continues his lifelong passion undertaking a career as a professional musician.

Today, as a performing artist he spends most of his time leading his group for which he composes and arranges most of the music. The band is constantly on the move as a sought af
ter performing group and spends most of its time performing in and around the Pacific Northwest. When not leading his own group Kareem can be seen and heard performing as a sideman with many other top notch musical acts and projects, most notably The Paperboys from Vancouver BC.

As an educator Kareem divides his time teaching jazz improvisation as an artist in residence at The Tacoma School of the Arts, directing the award winning student jazz ensemble at Pierce College, conducting masterclasses and workshops at schools around the Puget Sound area, and maintaining a full load of private students. Along with his teaching duties Kareem is the director or The Tacoma Jazz Association, serves on the Tacoma Arts Commission, and is a D'Addario Woodwinds performing artist.

Kareem holds a Bachelors Degree of Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle Washington which he attended after receiving a full scholarship.

Throughout his years of teaching Kareem has worked with students of all ages and abilities, from beginners just getting started, to advanced players who simply want new ideas and direction.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are relaxed and are focused on what you would like to learn.

I usually begin with assessing where students are in their abilities and then come up with a lesson plan based on what they already know and what they would like to accomplish.
They can be geared towards a 5 year old with no musical training whatsoever, or to an advanced musician who wants to further develop their skills.

Topics that I cover in lessons throughout a typical day of teaching include: Instrument technique, sight reading skills ( note and rhythm recognition ), memorization skills, music theory, ear training, improvising, and composing.

After 3 to 6 months of lessons and regular practice a beginning student should have a good command of their instrument and a strong foundation of sight reading. At this point we normally will also have started some music theory as well. For students wanting to focus on jazz we will have already begun improvising as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
5x10 room w/ piano and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I focus on the basics of learning to read music and basic technique on the instruments that I teach. From there I proceed with theory, ear training, improvising, composition etc. It all depends on what the students want to learn. I am comfortable teaching classical music as well as jazz, rock, composition, and improvisation.

Kareem has been teaching me since I was in the fourth grade. I am currently in 8th grade, and man what can I say, he's as good as it gets! After two years I was in my middle school jazz band, which is not easy for a person who has only been playing for two years. You, yourself will be able to see extreme progress within just a few lessons! You must know Kareem teaches at Pierce College, a class at the Tacoma School of the Arts (which I hopefully will be attending and taking his class), teaches numerous private students every week, and lastly he performs with a stellar jazz band of his own! He is extremely dedicated to the musical field. If I were anybody reading this review and wanted to start playing any of the variety of instruments he plays, I would call Kareem K.!

Do you want to learn how to play the flute? Look no further!

During a Corinne flute lesson, you will learn how to create beautiful sounds first and foremost. This is the basis of great flute playing.

Once you are producing some quality sounds, we will move on to learning notes, reading music, and accomplishing your goals!

Aside from perfecting flute technique, we will also work on musicality and listening skills! These skills are important in bringing music to life.

If you already know how to play the flute, but would like a little more help, I will continue your education in whatever direction you would like to go.

I look forward to working with you!

About Corinne
Hello! Thank you for checking out my TakeLessons profile. My name is Corinne, and my passion is teaching. Great teachers can have lasting effects on their students, and I cherish the possibility of improving my students’ lives through music.

When I'm teaching a lesson, it may seem on the surface that we're only practicing how to play their instrument well. However, with every student that I meet, my goal is to help them learn how to set and achieve realistic goals. A brand new clarinet student’s weekly goal may be to play their instrument for 10 seconds without taking a breath. An advanced clarinet student’s goal may be to master a piece for their college audition. Both students have challenging goals based on their skill level, but the goals look very different!

I believe that goal-setting is an important life skill that can set a
nyone on a path to greatness – as long as they know how to follow through.
My goal is to help YOU reach your goals.

When I am not working with students, you can find me working on my own goals! I practice all of my instruments often, and I am working hard to become a great tap dancer. My non-musical interests include learning about the coffee-making process, learning how to make costumes from scratch, and playing The Sims.

Thank you for your attention, and I hope to meet you soon!

I highly recommend Julian as a saxophone teacher. My son started playing saxophone and taking lessons with Julian three years ago, when my son was 9 years old. Julian is patient with my son and has built a good rapport with him. Julian has always encouraged him to try his best and to not be discouraged when he makes mistakes, and that has made my son comfortable with Julian and confident enough to push himself. Also, Julian is reliable and punctual, and is good at communicating through text and email.

I am from Puerto Rico. I began to play flute since I have 11 years old until now. I graduated recently from Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico with a Bachelors of Music, specifically flute, with great accomplished expectations of my professors.

Flute students can expect to improve week to week in their flute technique. I am giving flute classes since I was 13 years old! I would be with the student step by step until he/she improve. My way to teach has helped many students to go to levels that even they don't believed to reach, sometimes break with bad habits or fears when they play included. Also the feedback of my students has been satisfactory. Most of them tell me that they like how I connect everything I teach, like music theory, scales and flute studies in a practical way. I have had students for 1 or 2 years studying with me.

For Spanish students, I already born and raised in Puerto Rico, so my native language is Spanish. Even though, I decided to learn English and I discovered that there are people who wants to learn Spanish as well as I learned English for a variety of reasons: job positions, travel, meet people, etc. I am thankful for learn English, so why I will not help you to learn Spanish as well?

In general, every student is unique and deserve an unique class, so my classes are planned according to the level of the student, his/her goals and/or interest. So my first class include to know why you want to learn to play flute or to speak Spanish or why you want to improve it.

My personal passion is to play flute and help others to learn something that I could explain well and that it is new for them. I look forward to meeting you and help you until you become professional in the topic!
