I am a mezzo soprano with a bachelor and masters of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Houston. I am pursuing a career in opera while teaching private voice and piano lessons,
I am happy to work with students at all levels of experience, and start accepting students at age 12. During my lessons I like to focus on developing the student's voice through a classical approach. By forming a strong foundation in healthy singing the student will be able to sing in various genres without strain to his/her voice.
In my piano lessons I use the series of method books, Piano Adventures, developed by Nancy and Randall Faber. Through these instructions the student will learn to read music as well as establish a proficiency for playing the piano. I accept beginner to intermediate level students, starting at age 5.

If you take lessons from me we will have fun while working hard. I develop my lessons around what I feel the student needs on that particular day.
In a voice lesson we might spend the entire time on technique exercises to strengthen the voice. We might also work on several songs with an emphasis on interpretation.
In regards my piano lessons, I generally stick to the curriculum, but will take the time to focus on the individual needs of the student.
I expect my students to practice at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. Everyone learns at a different rate, but if the student practices regularly, he/she will see progress within a few months.

I have an upright piano in my studio as well as several music books. I expect my students to bring their music as well as their assignment book to every lesson.

I'm a young, enthusiastic, energetic, and patient pianist with a B.A. in Jazz Piano Performance from Lewis and Clark College.

So, born in Dallas, I've spent parts of my childhood in various parts of the country, from Washington D.C. to Carbondale, Colorado to Portland, Oregon, and now in hot and humid Houston, Texas. America has a plenty to offer and our great country's musical history is rich and eclectic. I first started playing piano at a very young age from a very old lady. It was something I resented my parents for, not really understanding the whole point of playing music. But now, in retrospect, I thank them indefinitely for exposing me to one of the most important passions of my life. It was in 6th grade that I joined a rock n' roll band, singing and playing all sorts of keyboards and having a ball with music. The idea that I w
as having fun playing music finally dawned on me and the verb "playing" music finally made perfect sense to me. Without passion, music is simply another endeavor, so this realization propelled me into the realm of music indefinitely.

In high-school I finally learned what jazz music was and fell in love with the idea of spontaneous improvisation. Learning theory really helped and I started jamming with my buddies, eventually starting a cover band. Although I've never lost sight of my classical roots, trying to improve my technique as well as my sight-reading, it was in jazz that I really found my calling. So in college, I started studying with a great jazz pianist, Randy Porter, and found my fingers wrapping themselves around my own music in a way I never thought possible. So that's that, I've recently graduated, having played gigs and teaching kids, and found my way into a new city with new possibilities.

When it comes to teaching, most teachers adhere to a strict curriculum. While I do love my curriculum, I will often change things around in order to cater to my students' different needs. Through all my experiences, I've learned that positive reinforcement is ideal and that a good association with a learning experience often paves the way for more of them. Working with me gives students the opportunity to make headway in an instrument without painstaking monotony. The more that somebody enjoys learning, the more that they learn. I love to have fun when I'm teaching, so my students tend to have fun as well. Like I said earlier, music should be "played," and playing should be fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons will usually begin with a recap of the last week, what the student has practiced, and what they accomplished since the last lesson. For some students, I will assign listening over the week, so at the beginning of the lessons, I read over the observations that they made in regards to the songs they listened to.
One thing I require of all of my students is a notebook devoted solely to the lesson, where the student writes down what he/she thinks about in terms of accomplishments and what they want to learn. I will also write down in the notebook different techniques, assignments, and various other things related to the lesson for the betterment of the student. My typical lesson will involve a communication between the student and myself, trying best to learn where the student is coming from and cater to his/her necessities in terms of learning. I am laid back, for the most part, but will encourage the student to practice. I do not get angry, but I will try to inspire the student through various techniques, becoming more disappointed than enraged at a student's lack of enthusiasm. Lessons for me are fun and I try and convey that jovial enthusiasm to my students.

Lessons in living room with upright piano, couch. I do have cats, so heads up if you're allergic.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I may or may not bring music paper and lesson books. If it is the first lesson, I'll definitely bring some material. I expect a piano in the home of the student given the enormous stature of the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz piano, first and foremost. Although I was coached in classical as a child and can easily teach most intermediates, jazz is my forte and my major in college. In terms of teaching styles, it all depends on the student. More than most teachers, though, I put a heavy weight on listening to music in order to fully understand it. Technique is very important and must be taught, but feel is probably paramount and should be emphasized. Before a student can accurately play a piece of music, he/she must be able to connect with the music. When it comes to the piano, especially jazz piano, theory and knowledge of how the sounds of the instrument interact are also crucial. I will teach an appropriate amount of theory to the students given the style of play and pieces they are learning.

Jerred is an easy going, flexible and professional teacher who teaches my 7 years old son. My son sees him as his role model and has taken to Jerred's style of teaching very well. Very impressed with what he has achieved so far. Currently we go to his apartment which is in a great location.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

So far, I look forward to each lesson! Troy is very kind, yet very helpful and has helped me target on my personal goals with opera while also learning more each time! I highly recommend him. It doesn't matter if you have no experience in voice or only experience in voice ( as my experience is theatre and musical theatre), he is patient in helping you achieve the goals set. Holly is simply magnificent! She's incredibly talented and a wonderful teacher. My daughter took lessons from Holly for six years and had much success. She placed in All State, Governor's Honors and Honor Choirs. The best part was when she received a scholarship for vocal performance, all four years of college (undergrad)! Now, she's studying for her master’s degree in vocal pedagogy and performance. Holly's influence went beyond vocal performance skills, she's a mentor and role model to her students. Judith is a once in a lifetime mentor and voice coach that will work with you no matter where you are in your musical journey. She's been flexible, kind, and patient with me despite the fact that I had no prior musical experience whatsoever. I really can't put into words how much she's helped me in developing a creative outlet for myself. She also has a great concern for her student's health and emphasizes teaching how to sing in a healthy way without damaging one's voice. I've been her student for just a few months and I feel like I walk away with significant improvement every time I see her. Overall, I simply can't recommend her highly enough.

I've been a professional performer for over 15 years as a actor, singer, and dancer. I help students to find their own voice and not an imitation of someone else. I am a professional director and performer in the Houston theater scene. I graduated from University of Houston with a Bachelors in Acting and Directing. I trained my voice at Houston Music Institute, University of Houston, and at Rice University where I primarily focused on classical, Broadway, and jazz techniques.

Many acting students come to me with big broad characters and extravagant gestures. While there are some shows that might be stylized this way, this isn't grounded in truth. Many directors will see it as false. I teach students to listen and respond honestly without forcing emotion. I believe that audiences can feel when emotion is genuine and when it's not. By learning to respond honestly, allowing themselves to feel, and thinking critically about the motives of characters, students become better listeners, better communica
tors, and more empathetic in their daily lives. They also become more believable and dynamic performers onstage or on screen.

Every voice is unique, and I want students to discover the beauty of their truly personal instrument. Because of the personal nature of the voice, I strive to create a safe space to explore. My main priority is freeing the voice from unnecessary tension and supporting it with the breath so students' true sound can be discovered. I know many different exercises for each specific element of vocal technique. I transfer between exercises to actual music pieces until proper technique becomes muscle memory and replaces old habits.

I'm a firm believer in the joy of art. If we are not having fun, we should probably be doing something else. Right?

Are you working on a solo piece for a musical? Or, wanting to train your voice to sing opera? What about just really rocking at Karaoke with your friends? My name is Kimberly, and I can help you do all of these and more! I am a classically trained singer with over 13 years of experience in the field. We can work on singing in a variety of styles, including: broadway, pop, classical, and opera. We will work on support, diction, vocalization, vowel formation, and we will work on your own unique sound. I look forward to meeting you!

Hello! I’m Kimberly, and I am a huge music lover! I have been singing solos and with choirs for as long as I can remember! I went to school at Angelo State University, and I have had the opportunity to be classically trained.I've been working with singers since 2015 and have loved helping my students sing solos, in quartets, and in choirs. My teaching style is encouraging, fun, and student driven.

First, we will see where you are as a singer. Then, together we will discuss your musical goals. We will work on making your voice stronger and your vocal range grow, so you can create your best sound!

I took a couple lessons with Kimberly before I sang in a musical for my school. She helped me work on projecting and she worked with me on diction. It really helped!

I have sung in many choirs, but there were some things I wanted to work on, including harmonizing, blending and vowel formation. Kimberly helped me so much with these, and I am so excited to sing for my church choir now! I would highly recommend her!
