Flutist, Roberta M., is equally at home playing classical and new music. I Care If You Listen has extolled her “lush, full tones… even among the best professionals, not many flute players sound so compelling in a lower register.” Praising her “extreme adventurousness,” New York Concert Review said she “riveted with her performance, inspiring one to want a repeated hearing.” Roberta is a founding member of the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, a quartet of unusual instrumentation dedicated to commissioning and performing new works. To date, the group has commissioned over fifty pieces.

Roberta holds a Bachelor of Music with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music from SUNY-Purchase College, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Her teachers include Robert Dick, Tara H
elen O’Connor, Alexa Still, and Jean Rosenblum. Roberta resides in Brooklyn, New York where she teaches privately and is on faculty at Great Neck Music Conservatory.

Roberta has performed with groups including Duo RoMi (with pianist Mirna Lekic), the Portland String Quartet, SEM Ensemble, Wet Ink Ensemble, Argento Chamber Ensemble, Wordless Music Orchestra, Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, Lunatics at Large, Kagel Nacht, Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, Cheyenne Symphony, and the Greeley Philharmonic in venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tulley Hall, Merkin Hall, The Kennedy Center, Bargemusic (with tenor Robert White), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a guest artist, she has appeared at Bloomsburg University and the University of Southern Maine. She has recorded on New Dynamic Records, Meta, Bridge, and Innova Records.

Roberta has been a Bang on a Can Summer Institute fellow and a participant in the Institute and Festival of Contemporary Performance at Mannes College, as well as participating in festivals at Banff and Domaine Forget. Roberta recently won the Artists International Special Presentation Award and was presented in her debut recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Other awards include: Purchase College’s Baroque Concerto Competition, Bay Chamber Summer Music Woodwind Prize, Dante Alighieri Society of Denver Music Scholarship, and the Emily K. Rand Award.

With over a decade of teaching and a doctorate in flute performance, I have extensive experience teaching flute lessons and recorder lessons to students from beginners to advanced. I teach at my studio in Brooklyn or can come to your home in New York City. I have previously taught in Colorado, Westchester, NY, and throughout New York City. I've been on faculty at The Harmony Program and the Denver Public School’s Saturday Music Program, where I taught beginning flute classes to public school children. I have given masterclasses at the University of Southern Maine and the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School, and have taught music classes at Purchase College and Hostos Community College.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a studio with music stands, flutes, recorders, an upright piano, and place for parents to wait. Street parking is available, and I'm less than a block from the subway.

Students are expected to bring their instrument, music, and a notebook.

I bring my flute. Students need to have a music stand, music, a notebook, and a working instrument.

I've taken three lessons with Roberta so far, and it's been awesome! I've played flute in middle and high school, but after taking a break through college I thought it'd be good to pick it back up as a hobby in the city. She's been really great with helping me improve my tone and has a lot of knowledge. I'm excited to build my repertoire with her!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Dr. Maureen Spranza, is a great music teacher, my son is taking piano classes with her and I'm very grateful with her, because she always take the extra time to make sure my kid is learning, my kid loves Mrs. Maureen because she is a great teacher but also she is a great human being, she really cares about her students. And she not only plays the piano, she plays all the instruments, I hope to see my son become a great musician thanks to the dedication that Maureen puts in his classes, my kid loves his piano classes, every time after clases he came home very exited to practice what he learned and al of this if because Dr. Maureen encourage him to be better in Avery class

Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

Formally educated in flute, piano, percussion, and vocal performance, Mr. Smith has won several regional and national competitions on each of his primary instruments, and has had the privilege of studying with and participating in masterclasses led by some of the the top artists in the world.

Before moving to his current position as Bass Section Leader at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, he enjoyed a long relationship playing in recital at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (where he also served as Bass Soloist and Section Leader) with Dr. Patrick Carlin, piano/organ. He can also be heard in performance (on both piano and flute) with the Quux Collective, a Richmond based new music ensemble directed by Dr. Sheri Oyan. Most recently, he has been a featured artist with Classical Revolution RVA, a group whose mission is to spread classical musi
c outside of the concert hall and into the community. Anthony has also sung (and played piano and percussion) with the Virginia Chorale, a Norfolk, VA professional choral ensemble led by Chuck Woodward.

Mr. Smith has worked as pianist, vocal coach, musical director, and orchestrator for several professional theater companies across the country. Anthony has enjoyed a long collaboration with Virginia Repertory Theatre, where his credits include The Color Purple, Nunsense, Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas, Always Patsy Cline, The Producers, The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, and several others! Anthony is also the Musical Director in Residence at the University of Richmond and Maggie Walker Governor's School.

An active proponent of new music, Mr. Smith has been involved in the world premieres of several new operas and musicals, most recently "The Snow Maiden" by Andrew Haile Austin and "Kept" by Kristin Kuster and Megan Levad. Anthony is also the Music Director and Conductor of the National Tour of Felipe DeLeon's "Noli Me Tangere", one of two operas originally composed in Tagalog.

Anthony is Conductor of the Peninsula Youth Winds, a group comprised of advanced high school students with an interest in the wind band repertoire.

Mr. Smith is a strong believer in the importance of music education, and maintains an active private studio comprised of flute, percussion, piano, and voice students. He has also works with several educational camps, including Virginia Repertory Theatre’s “Stage Explorers” Summer Camps and Young Performers' Institute and the Advanced Musical Theatre Camp at Swift Creek Mill Theatre.

I've been teaching the flute for 10 years and I am comfortable working with all age groups and ability levels.

Several of my students have participated in San Diego Honor Band as well as San Diego Youth Symphony. Preparation is the key to success, and I specialize in coaching students for auditions.

I also focus on duets and tone studies to help you unlock the beautiful sound of this instrument.

Music theory is an integral part of each lesson (as well as some basic piano concepts which can be very useful to woodwind players). Jazz conception and improvisation is also a specialty!

I've been teaching woodwinds (saxophone, flute, and clarinet) for the past 15 years and enjoy the one-on-one interaction with students of all ages. Music is one of the last professions that is truly learned through apprenticeship. Having a good private teacher is absolutely essential to your growth and development!

Over the years I've amassed wide variety of concepts and materials to speed your learning process and keep things FUN. I've taught all ages and abilities: new beginners (elementary and middle school level), older students just picking up the horn again, conservatory-bound high school students, amateur professionals, marching band & drum core kids, retirees looking for a fun hobby, professional musicians looking to expand their jazz knowledge, and more. I'm currently adjunct faculty at USD Dept of Music, Mesa College, and have taught as a clinician/coach for numerous high school and middle school programs. I am a beginning Tenor Sax student and a senior citizen. I have played other instruments years ago, but never a woodwind instrument. Ian has been a marvelous instructor for me. Although I had never picked up a sax until December 2014, he already has taught me how to play several simple tunes and a number of scales. His patience and sensitivity to the appropriate pace is impecable. He also keeps me informed of other activities - concerts, recordings, community events to reinforce my interest. I would recommend Ian as a music teacher to anyone without reservation or hesitation.

I’m an adult beginner student and have been taking lessons for approximately one year. Ian’s approach and method have really motivated me. At age 12, I wanted to play piccolo in a marching band. though I was soon to be inspired by the amazing young musicians of the Seattle Youth Symphony and camp Orchestras under Maestro Vilem Sokol. Due to my maternal grandfather's work as a Chicago vaudeville orchestra leader, from early childhood, the performing arts have been in my blood. Starting to study classical flute at age 12, then playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras and taking professional jazz/classical flute workshops/master classes, I've been teaching and playing all styles of music professionally since my 20's.

Vocal study began at age 15 with some great artists/educators in SF, Seattle, and Europe, including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Adrian West from NYC Broadway, David Tigner- SF Opera, Davida Kagan-Seattle Opera, and Roland Wyatt-
Manhattan Transfer coach /NY Academy of Dramatic Arts. Through many teaching years, I've developed a very successful, uniquely simple 8 part method to help cross cultural individuals and groups sing optimally from thei

Abby is an excellent teacher. She tried her best to help me understand English by providing me examples, explaining detail, revising grammar, and so on. Besides teaching me English, she shared her own experiences with me. She told me how people can get through difficulties.
She is not only a real teacher in English, but also in life.

Abby van Spronsen is an excellent teacher, who has helped me develop my voice and musical style before and during my Conservatory studies. She really takes time for her students and because of her musical background she knows about many different styles, from jazz to pop to musical and even classical music. She knows how to use this knowledge well in her classes and loves to teach, which makes her a very inspiring voice teacher. I have learned a lot during the time that I took classes from Abby.

My teaching style is based on exploration. Exploration of how the student in front of me best learns. I focus on physical, mental and problem solving. My goal is to have my students master the basics and understand how to go beyond them without my guidance. As a result, I love starting lesson with improvisation on the scale we are learning. Next we look at an etude and maybe even create our own exercises based on the students weakness with that scale or etude. We will also work on pieces.

Currently, Mary is teaching and performing in Boston. She finished her Master of Music in flute performance at the Hartt School in May 2016, where she studied with New York City Opera flutist Janet Arms. Mary received her Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music studying with local Orange County artist Mary Palchak.

Mary has a teaching style that focuses both on technique and musicality as well as physical well being. Not only is she interested in giving her students excellent musicianship and finger agility, she also is very interested in making sure that her pupils play comfortably and sustainably. I have a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Music (performance on flute & piccolo) from Hartwick College and a Master of Science in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology from SUNY Albany.
