Gabriel F.

Marietta, GA

About Gabriel

Gabe has been playing the drums for twenty years and has been teaching students for about twelve years. In that time he has played with numerous live acts as well as studio work. His experience mostly lies in jazz, funk, blues, latin, and rock. As much as he loves playing these styles he loves to teach them. Gabe's music education began in grammar school and continued through high school. In college he earned a non-music bachelor's degree but never stopped studying the drums. With the help of his own private instructors and continued playing experience, he now considers himself a self-t
aught musician and uses this experience to show his students how to do the same. His students can expect a challenging curriculum that will make them better players no matter what style of music they play.

Gabe has played with or shared a stage with countless musicians including Average White Band, The Waz, Moe., Moxy Fruvous, Schleiho, Entropy, and Ike Stubblefield. He now plays out regularly and teaches in the Atlanta area where he lives with his wife and two-year-old son.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching philosophy centers around the idea that if the student is willing to put in hard work and dedication he or she can accomplish their goals. I try to put an emphasis on hard work and strong practice habits and the benefits that come as a result. That being said, in my lessons I try to keep a fun and laid back atmosphere where the student is not afraid to make mistakes. I expect students to make mistakes so that we can learn from these mistakes. I find that many times new and creative ideas are born from mistakes.

Because every musician is unique, each student is evaluated on an individual basis and a personal curriculum is created that fits the student's needs and goals. Once these goals are charted out a solid foundation of rudiments, technique, and posture is created (or maintained in many cases) for the student to build upon.

The student's goals remain the main focus of the lesson plan. I do not teach in order to create or mold musicians. This is up to the student. I want the student's individualism and creativity to shine through. Students are encouraged to interpret what is taught not to mimic. Soon we will form a relationship in which I start to learn things from the student as well.

I teach out of various books depending on which styles the student wants to learn and accompany them with music to listen to and play along with. I also ask the student to bring some examples of his or her favorite music and drummers so we can dissect what these musicians are doing to better learn from them. Within time the student will be transcribing the music of other drummers as well as writing their own grooves and exercises. With some individual hard work and dedication the student will become a better drummer and over all better student of music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
2 drum sets (acoustic and padded); congas, timbales, bongos, djembe, percussion equipment

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my own sticks, books, a pad and a drum with stand. I expect the student to have at least their own pad and sticks.

*** Specialties ***
Drumset, hand drums and percussion.

The music I personally like to play and listen to is funk, jazz, blues and latin. I love to teach these styles and to challenge my students to learn these styles. I make sure students have a strong foundation of rudiments. I then show them how to use them creatively and to apply them to the drum set musically. I also put a strong emphasis on groove, keeping time and learning how to play as a member of a group, not just a drummer but a musician.

Great Instructor

Gabe is a great instructor who is extremely knowledgeable in all facets of the drum and drumming. I am an older student who has started lessons after a very long layoff from the drums….way back to elementary school days. Gabe is extremely patient as we have gone back and started with the very basics. I would highly recommend Gabe to anyone interested in studying the drums at any level.

Outstanding student instructor!

Gabe has been a phenomenal drum instructor for our 10-year old nephew! He blends the perfect balance of discipline on fundamentals with fun rhythms that keep our nephew interested but focused. We've seen great progress in his development just in the first two months. Gabe is very patient, yet firm, in his style and his skill level is amazing, so his qualifications are certainly exceeded.

Overall, we would highly recommend Gabe for student instruction!

Great Teacher!

Gabe is an awesome teacher. Very laid back, but also knows his stuff and supplies plenty of good practice material to help improve your skills. Seems to be familiar with teaching all different kinds of styles and has no problem adjusting the lessons to suit the needs of the student.

Mike's focus for beginners learning the guitar is on technique and theory. His approach is to use basic chord progressions and single note reading. Of course the specifics of a student's curriculum will be shaped by that student's interests.

I feel less than qualified to give the right review for Mrs. Aimee. Her background is impressive. I chose her because she helped people with special needs, I am one of those people, though I had forgotten that is why I chose her. I chose her because she is female. And I feel more comfortable with women like her. I also very much liked the photograph of her because I am a photographer and it was very well planned out. The shadowing and the guitar. But I was not sure if she would be right for me. Until I met her. She is a professional. She is more professional than my own therapists and doctors. She has the ability to inspire greatness. I will always benefit from her teaching the guitar. And knowing her personably. I wanted to write my last overall review of her since instead of the cookie cutter reviews that were previously made. All of you love Mrs. Aimee as much as I do. But because of some technicalities I will no longer be working with her. My shortcomings get the better of me, but I learn each time. And I can move forward from each experience. So you go.....!

She encourages and gives detailed instuctions and is genourous with her time. And plays guitar very well at a level I could only dream of. She helped me remember a song I knew. And taught me different ways to play songs that I already know.
I also want to add that Aimee has been an excellent teacher, who is so very patient and talented!

Maria M.

Smyrna, GA

About Maria

MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of my studio is to create well-rounded, educated musicians who will always have a lifelong passion for the art no matter their long-term goals. I strive for my students to be:

(1) Lifelong learners who develop successful learning habits.
(2) Creative and critical thinkers who will become effective communicators.
(3) Responsible and respectful members of society who respect other cultures.
(4) Able to set short-term and long-term goals and be able to see them through to their success.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

It is of the utmost importance that my stude
nts are well-educated in their chosen instrument; they must know and understand music and music-making. Students who can play are a dime a dozen, but students who understand the music they are playing are often hard to find. I teach students to know music thoroughly, not just to “play.” I desire my students to comprehend elements of the score, to use their bodies effectively to make good sound, and to interpret music creatively and according to historical performance practices across all genres of music. Thus, I give students a purposeful education in technique, quality literature, performance and artistry, music theory, and music history.

Although students differ in ability and development, I maintain high expectations for our students. I expect attention and respect in lessons, faithful and diligent practice, careful adherence to instructions, and an “I’ll-do-my-best” attitude. If students regularly meet these expectations, then they will excel to the level that they are able. It is my joy to help students master their music, to do the best they can, and to strive for and achieve excellence.

Lastly, I want students to enjoy and appreciate their instrument, music, and music-making; and we know as teachers, we are very influential in making this happen. Students develop enjoyment of music by understanding music, experiencing success in music, being exposed to good and varied genres of music, and receiving instruction from a teacher who is enthusiastic and encouraging. It is our goal to provide all of these opportunities for students, and as a result their lives will be enriched as they enjoy their instrument.

Maria has been an absolute blessing for our family. Piano is something both my wife and I wanted for our children to learn, but having 4 boys where their interests are only video games and football, it can be difficult. Also since my wife and I are from from musical, we had absolutely no clue what to expect. We had gone through 3 other teachers where our kids didn't advance at all. Maria was our last try and we are so thankful for the referral.

Maria really connects with the boys and they absolutely love her. To top it off, she's very motivating, organized, and for the first time with any teacher, she had an action plan. We knew where are kids were with progress regularly. We also we informed how to keep them motivated at home and how to get them to practice. My oldest son (14) has gone through 3 levels in 1.5 years and has actually been asking about joining the jazz band at his school. My 3 other sons (6,8,9) have been steadily going through the levels and most importantly are able to apply what they are learning to music Maria doesn't teach them. My 8 year old was actually describing what a chord progression was the other day to his grandfather and used the word cadence. I had to google what that meant on my phone!

Her location is also perfect. As long as they have something to do, Maria doesn't mind them sitting in the living room while she teaches a lesson so it enables me to run to the grocery store or bank which are less than 2 miles from her home while the kids are in lessons.

We are extremely pleased with Maria and I would recommend her to anyone. She is worth every single penny. Our family will be moving to John's Creek this October and we will be making the drive once a week through Atlanta traffic happily.
