Thomas W.

Downingtown, PA

About Thomas

Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a c
appella groups.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion

Rosalind H.

Coatesville, PA

About Rosalind

Hi, my name is Rosalind H. and I began my musical education at the age of ten, when I first started taking lessons. Since that time I have performed professionally as a singer in churches, cafes and at weddings and in venues including the Kimmel Center and Carnegie Hall during my college years with the renowned Westminster Symphonic Choir. After spending a year teaching children and adolescents aged 6-17 voice and piano while completing my Master™s of Arts in Music Therapy at Drexel University, I am now looking to take on private students in Chester County and surrounding areas.

I am a Wes
tminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist.

*Please be aware that I teach Beginners Piano.  I do, however, teach all levels of voice, as long as the interested voice student is over at least the age of 8. Singing lessons for students younger than this age can be detrimental to a child's vocal development.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am available to travel to your house (piano students must have a piano or keyboard) or host you in my home

Piano students can expect to learn the basic music theory knowledge, including reading staff notation and lead sheets.  I will also focus on fingering techniques and coordination.Students will be expected to practice theory knowledge and songs outside of lessons to help improve finger coordination and music-reading speed and accuracy.

I offer beginning to advanced singing lessons for students interested in classical, operatic, Broadway and popular music and beginning piano lessons.I try to provide my students the opportunity to practice a wide range of skills when learning music.

Voice students will learn exercises to practice good breath control, posture and diction, all of which form the foundations of good singing.  Students will be expected to practice these exercises outside of lessons, prior to practicing vocal literature, so as to develop good singing habits.  About fifty percent of lesson time will be dedicated to technique, and the other fifty percent will be dedicated to learning vocal pieces.  Dependent upon their level of knowledge, students may also be asked to watch videos of professional singers outside of lessons, so as to expand their musical understandings and aural sensitivity.  These practices will enhance muscle coordination and breath control when singing, helping to enhance and improve pitch, timbre, expression and vocal range.

As a board certified music therapist, I often draw upon those skills I learned during my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development.  My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home studio is equipped with keyboard, guitar and piano, as well as a sizable repertoire of classical, broadway and popular music. I am more than happy to help students find any music they may need for lessons that is not already in my library. I also own a portable keyboard that I use for out-of-studio voice students.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to provide a piano if they are receiving at piano lessons as it is needed for practice. I have a portable keyboard for voice students, but I strongly recommend that voice students record their lessons for reference during practice.

I recommend the following books for piano students (listed by age):
Ages 5-8:
My First Piano Adventure, Lesson Book A with by Nancy & Randall Faber
Ages 8-12:Piano Adventures - Level 1: Lesson Book [Book]Faber Piano Adventures

Ages 13 and up:

Adult All-In-One Course: Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, Level ...by Willard A. Palmer

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical and operatic music (arias and art songs), but I am comfortable with a wide array of singing literature, as I believe that the technical foundations of good singing remain constant, regardless of the genre. I also have performed with a gospel/spiritual choir, as a soloist, during my college years.

Lori A.

Avondale, PA

About Lori

Hello! Thank you for your interest in my profile.
I teach piano, horn, trumpet, theory & ear training, and coach ensembles, performance class as well as music and movement class for ages 0-6, and drum circle and cultural literacy for adults.

I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and I've played all over the world. I've played with soloists from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons to Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. I still perform and consider this important to my teaching as well.

Some major accomplishments include an invitation to the White Ho
use, over 50 solo performances with orchestras starting with The Philadelphia Orchestra at age 15, a performance for the Princess of Thailand, and early television performances starting at age 7. In order to accomplish these things, I had great teachers, a regimen of discipline and practice, an expectation I have of my students, and all the rewards that have lasted a lifetime. Properly taught music lessons are life lessons and are never a waste. I incorporate fun into the lessons as discipline and fun must be combined for success and enjoyment at all levels.

My teachers included Eleanor Sokoloff, Susan Starr, and Dale Clevenger.

I've taught for 29 years, and have a proven track record of success. I've taught at Universities including The University of Notre Dame, The University of Tennessee, The Chinese University and the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong. I adore my students. Each one needs to be assessed and taught differently. Something you cannot learn in school, only through years of experience!

I teach in Avondale-Kennet Square-Chaddsford, Bryn Mawr-Villanova, PA, Hockessin-Wilmington,, DE, Newark, DE, and Cherry Hill, NJ with possibility of travel 10 minutes away. Please note: If you want in home piano lessons, you need a reasonably high quality instrument, and must maintain the tuning. I have perfect pitch and it will be crucial to me.

Classical Piano · In home
While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

Life is all about learning new things and making yourself a better, brighter, more adept being each and every day. To do anything less is selling yourself, and the world around you, short. Anthony has really shown me from the very begging to where I am now, and is willing to match the appropriate pace that the student wishes to go. He is opening to working with scheduled changes, to finding the best time if needed. I have much to learn, and I plan to keep learning from him.
