I have formally studied flute for more than 23 years and have performed in diverse concert bands, orchestras, theatre orchestras, ensembles, and other performance groups for most of that time. I teach all ages and levels, from beginner to advanced. I primarily provide classical instruction and training for the concert flute and piccolo. However, I also specialize in other woodwind instruments, particularly traditional Celtic instruments like the Irish Tin Whistle and traditional Irish wooden flute. Lessons in these specialized instruments and others are available upon request and based on student interest. All lessons are offered in-person in the comfort of a student's home, or remotely through TakeLessons.com's online learning platform. Lessons cater to each student's needs, goals, level, and interests, and are designed to be fun, engaging experiences.

Experienced musician of 25 years of flute performance. Available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a love for music! My goal is to make sure my lessons are a fun and encouraging learning environment. I typically use Rubank Elementary and Intermediate books as well Trevor Wye and Taffanel et Gaubert for daily exercises to strengthen the students skills.

Karena's teaching style lies between analytical problem solving and imaginative music making. She is always eager to pass on the information she has learned from the teachers she has worked with and applies them in creative ways with her students. Phrasing is always first and she helps students problem solve the technical side to enable the music to come alive. While having a deep knowledge of the physicality of playing, she is sensitive in gauging what kind of approach each student needs and what will help them grow most effectively.

I understand that everybody learns differently. I take pride in individualizing every lesson to meet the unique needs of the student. I find so much joy and passion helping someone learn the flute, which has been in my life for over 19 years. Learning is the flute is fun and enjoyable, so lessons with me are too! :)

I have been playing the flute for over 15 years and am excited to teach students of all ages and abilities! I structure my lessons around the students’ goals, whether it is to play professionally or simply as a hobby. This allows students to progress at a comfortable rate and grants them freedom of repertoire choice, while still encouraging a strong foundation in fundamental skills (breathing, phrasing, technique, posture, music theory). Lessons also focus heavily on body awareness, so as to prevent common injuries.

The 15-minute lesson option is meant for students who wish to take recorder lessons as preparation for future flute-lessons. The 15-minute price is equivalent to a 30 minute recorder lesson.

I've been teaching flute for 7 years and love seeing my students discover their own musicality and build their confidence through flute playing! I teach all levels, from beginning to advanced flutists, including kids*, teens, recreational music learners, adult beginners, and secondary instrument learners. I can also coach you through audition and performance preparation, with special focus on performance psychology, anxiety, body awareness, and unlocking your flow state!

(*If your child is under age 10 and has a strong interest in flute or other wind instruments, I also teach recorder for ages 8 and up! This is a great safe & affordable way to get a head start on wind instruments for smaller fingers without straining the body.)
