James N.

Mishawaka, IN

About James

Hello everyone! Please have a look around my profile and feel free to contact me. I have taught privately since 2009 and joined takelessons.com in 2014.

I strongly feel each student needs lesson go
als tailored to what he or she wants to take away from music. Getting ready for a college performance degree, making it to state solo contest, surviving band music, or simply discovering the huge scope of music available to us these days are each worthy goals, but require different preparation. I will work with you to figure out where your interests lie and focus on those, first and foremost!

My education includes a bachelor's and master's degree in trumpet performance from Lawrence University and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. I just moved to the South Bend area in 2016 from Portland, OR, and have since started a new studio that has room for you to join! I also maintain an active teaching schedule with the Fairfield Jr/Sr High School marching band and Oregon Crusaders drum and bugle corps, as well as performing throughout Michiana.

Thanks for your time, and happy practicing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can provide: music stand, method books during lessons, recording equipment for lessons, tuner, metronome

Students should provide: instrument/mouthpiece, any other music they would like to play

*** Specialties ***
I have spent most of my playing time on classical (orchestral, chamber, and solo music), but also welcome students interested in jazz up to an intermediate level, especially if they have an interest in playing lead trumpet.

I loved learning with Amanda! She catered every lesson perfectly to me to make the lesson more enjoyable and productive. Whenever I got stuck in a performance rut Amanda always found a way to inspire me out of it. She knows music history inside and out and never ceased to amaze me. I'm so grateful I got the chance to meet with her weekly to have checkups on not only my pieces but also my moral. She helped me love to play my instrument and I'm so overwhelmed by the impact she made on me.

Ana has actively pursued finding a method of study for me that will progress me to new levels of understanding and playing. I have a non-traditional form of playing, and Ana has developed a sense for that and is steering my practice and lessons in a direction that will help me to capitalize on my strengths. She has also has kept a keen eye out for technique correction that are universal in their benefit. Recommended!

As an adult, I often dreamed of returning to the piano, having played for only a couple years as a youngster. Starting lessons again with Anna is a true joy. She opens up the beauty of the music and is gifted at shaping my technique to avoid bad habits and to help me progress. In one year I've come a long way. I'm especially pleased to learn I can be musically expressive even at my relatively low level of technical skill.

Anna is a disciplined artist who embraces me at my level, and my life is enriched.

Love to sing the blues? There a few things to keep in mind as you sing in this genre -- find out in this guest post by St. Augustine, FL teacher Heather L...   The history of blues music is rich and bittersweet.
