Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning flute lessons.

About Thomas
Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

Thomas is a great piano teacher who is incredibly professional, patient and helpful. He is fantastic at noticing deficiencies in your playing and is able to get you to fix them without ever being overbearing or too harsh. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable and incredibly flexible in his schedule. There were times when I had to change my lesson times and he always made sure to find time for us to get our lesson in. Thomas offers the best lessons for the best price! Whether you're a casual player or looking to help improve your chops, Thomas should be your first choice.

I've just picked up flute after (literally) 50 years and been taking lessons with Thomas for several months. Lessons are enjoyable, and Thomas has taken great pains to gear them toward my goals for learning. Every lesson includes technique, musicality, and theory, with the theory taught through practical application rather than just as an abstraction. He also gives me guidance on how to practice, which was one of my key goals for taking lessons. I was concerned about whether I could find someone who understood how to teach adults - and am very pleased that I succeeded!

For starters Christina came in 7 mins late (6:37) but promptly took her hands off the piano at 7:00 Pm stating, 30 mins done.
She made no effort to introduce herself to our 6 year old or get to know her atall.
She just sat down and started talking about this is a note, half note and the piano has groups of 2 and 3.
What does a half note mean to a 6 year old who is brand new to piano?
The lesson was absolutely drag and boring with my child just copying what she did.
Totally disappointing. Need a new instructor.

At age 12, I wanted to play piccolo in a marching band. though I was soon to be inspired by the amazing young musicians of the Seattle Youth Symphony and camp Orchestras under Maestro Vilem Sokol. Then thrilled to join them after having the good fortune of training with the then Seattle Symphony flute/piccolo players- Sidney and Adele Zeitlin, I began as a classical flute and voice major at WWSU in Bellingham.
My growing attraction to theater, then jazz, led me to Seattle UW San Francisco S U drama departments, while studying and playing every improvisational style of music from Brazilian to free form and pop/rock with many artists such as Paul Horn, Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Chuck Sher (Sher Music publisher), touring with renowned bebop vocalist, Jon Hendricks from the west coast to NYC,

Since then, I have performed voice, flute, and picollo in my own and others' numerous classical, jazz, pop, and theater ensembles, for over 45 years, teaching flute and voice since age 17 at

About Abby
IMPORTANT NOTICE: ** Because my private lessons are sporadically scheduled between other teaching, and I have found students over age 12 to need in depth lessons, the minimum time for them per session is ONE HOUR. ******

Due to my maternal grandfather's career as a Chicago vaudeville orchestra leader, from early childhood, the performing arts have been in my blood. Starting to study classical flute at age 12, then playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras and taking professional jazz/classical flute workshops/master classes, I've been teaching and playing all styles of flute music professionally since my 20's.

Vocal study began at age 15 with some great artists/educators in SF, Seattle, and Europe, including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Broadway singer Adrian West, David Tigner- SF Opera, Davida Kagan-Seattle Opera, and Rol
and Wyatt-
Manhattan Transfer coach /NY Academy of Dramatic Arts. Through many years of teaching experience, I've developed a very successful, uniquely simple 8 part method to help cross cultural individuals/groups of all ages , styles, and levels, sing optimally from their hearts. The necessary basic vocal techniques can be taught effectively in 4 to 8 lessons, though the learning process takes longer and can continue throughout one's lifetime.

With a BA in Theater Arts from SFSU, and over 50 years directing, acting, and musical experience, including the last 15 years also working successfully as an ESL educator, I have gained the confidence to help almost any student achieve their personal and/or professional goals.

My main purpose as a teacher is to help students reach their individual goals, which can range from honor band auditions, solo competitions, learning to improvise, or covering the latest pop song. I've been teaching for over three years, and I certainly know what it's like to be a student! This is why I maintain such a great rapport with younger students/beginners: I know that learning an instrument can seem daunting, so I do my best to guide students with the right information at the right time.

About Isaiah
Isaiah is a passionate teacher of the flute and piccolo. He is currently available to teach lessons at his home studio or online. Isaiah has helped students prepare for performances in Cincinnati and Japan, scholarship auditions, and begin the flute from scratch.

Isaiah is pursuing his Bachelor of Music in Flute at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music as a student of Randy Bowman, Principal Flute of the Cincinnati Symphony. Isaiah understands the needs of young students and works to instill confidence in every musician he teaches. Isaiah's teaching style is dynamic, grounded in known pedagogical methods, and tailored to every student's individual goals. Isaiah's students have achieved many honors, including 'Superior' ratings at solo and ensemble festivals. Isaiah also believes while hard work and discipline are imperative to s
uccess, a young musician must also learn the skills of patience and self-compassion.

Isaiah's personal musical highlights include performances with the CCM Philharmonia, Wind Orchestra, and Chamber Players. You can also find him in the pit orchestras for many theaters in Cincinnati. In high school, he was Principal Flute of the OMEA All-State Orchestra and a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has performed under the batons of Louis Langrée, Glenn Price, Gene Chang, and Sandra Dackow. He has performed in masterclasses for Bonita Boyd, Mindy Kaufman, Aaron Goldman, and Terri Sundberg.

In addition, haven taken over 4 years of Music Theory and Ear Training at music conservatories, I can provide a great way for beginners to learn to read music as well as to hear it.
I will incorporate these aspects into your lessons:

-articulation
-tone
-intonation
-vibrato
-rhythm
-musicality/being inspired
-how to practice/practice methods

Happy flute playing! :)

About Rebecca
Hello! Thank you for coming to view my profile! I am a junior at the Mannes School of Music studying Flute Performance with Judith Mendenhall. I graduated from Great Neck South High School and Manhattan School of Music Precollege. I have had a wide age range of flute students whom I taught how to read music as well as the flute itself. These students then went on to participate in NYSSMA. I have always had a passion for learning and teaching and hope to instill my passion upon you! Don't hesitate to send me any questions you may have!

**The availability drop down is a bit confusing. During the winter and summer, I will be able to teach in/around Great Neck AND in NYC, whereas during the Fall and the Spring I will be living in NYC and ONLY able to teach there. If you have any questions, please send me a message and we can work out our a

I've been studying saxophone with Jeff for a little over a year and a half now. In that time I've grown greatly as a saxophone player, musician, and improviser. Jeff does a great job of breaking things down to an understandable level while still keeping sight of the big picture - saying something important during a solo, and saying it in a way that keeps the audience interested. Lesson materials are always challenging enough to stay busy while never being too overwhelming. Jeff is a talented musician and teacher who knows what makes jazz, jazz. Anyone who is willing to put the work in and dedicate themselves will experience a lot of growth and learning with him.
