I have taught and accompanied voice students for over 15 years. I have been the music director and choral director for several church choirs including children's choirs for over 18 years. I like to mold my teaching style to the needs and goals of the student. I am strong in music theory and the training needed for voice students. They come away with a better knowledge of music no matter their age. Young students get an extensive musical experience along with their vocal training.

About Margaret
I have taught the piano along with guitar and voice for over 40 years, since I was 16 years old. I started lessons at 9 and continued lessons while I began teaching beginners at a music studio. Since then I have had many different experiences with all kinds of students. I love sharing the gift of music with my students. My goal is to give them a wonderful musical experience and allow them to expand their knowledge of music in a structured manner and can grow to become a casual or professional musician.

*** Lesson Details ***
I adjust my teaching style to the students goals. I like to say I am laid back but do expect progress each week. I can teach the piano for beginner to advanced students. Some students are college bound and need to learn the disciplines of music. Other students just want to learn to play for enjoyment. My main g
oal to to keep them interested and practicing. I use a composite of different methods depending on the students goals. I have found that each publisher of method books focus on different styles of music. Over the years I have picked the best of each one and we will use the best of the best. I also have edited music for students over the years and have a wide collection of supplemental music. As an example I love Disney music and a beginner after 3 months they will be learning "A Whole New World" from Aladdin. I can teach beginning Guitar students. My specialty is teaching to read "real" music as opposed to tab. Beginners need lots of TLC with the guitar because of the length of time it takes to make "good" sounds of the guitar. Learning good technique in a fun way is essential for good student progress.

Also I can teach beginning-intermediate vocal lessons. My main focus is developing proper vocal technique with vocal exercises and breathing techniques and still making it interesting and fun.
With all of this, i also teach music theory. Whether by itself or along with instrumental lessons, music theory is an essential for all musicians. Music theory is the how and why of everything we do in music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I currently have a baby grand, a spinet piano, 16 track sequencer, performance digital piano, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar, flute, music stands and keyboard stands.

*** Specialties ***
For the piano I use a mixed method of teaching depending on the students goals. I have used Schaum, Faber, Alfred, Thompson and Bastien. I also use Hannon for advanced students and Duvornoy, Alfred and other types of pedagogy for technique and exercises. I have also edited many pieces of music for early beginners to have fun with. Disney is my favorite. I use these supplemental pieces along with the method books to keep their interest in practicing.

I received lessons from Katherine over the summer. This was my first time with online lessons, but took lessons before from someone else one on one. The attention to detail, new techniques, and patience from Katherine far out weigh the one on one received. Katherine is an exceptional instructor, knows her stuff, with a wonderful sense of humor to boot. I will be taking lessons again-time and money permit-and she will be my instructor. I highly recommend her for any style of singing. I am skipping my way to a better voice. Thank you Katherine

When I think about singing, I think about flow. The voice should be able to move without any inhibitions. I strive to sing in this way and to teach my students how to achieve to sing this way. My technique involves vocal warm ups that will help loosen your voice, your body and your mind. I also find that expression is very important in music. We will go into every song searching for the right emotions to convey not just for the song, but for yourself. With every lesson you will find it easier to correct yourself during your practicing and end up falling in love with making music.

Anybody can learn how to sing! I will teach anybody as long as they don't give up and always give their best effort! My three main goals for every student beyond simply singing are: proper singing technique, reading music, and creating characters for their songs. If one way of learning doesn't work for you I will try another until I find what works. I will work with you to find what styles of music you like and what styles work best for your voice.
In lessons I will challenge you also to think about your performances. What did you hear and see that was well done, what needs improvement and how can you accomplish that?

About Hayley
Hello! I am about to go into my senior year at Miami University as a Music Major with a focus on vocal and general music education. I have been trained in singing for almost 8 years now and have experience with music theatre, opera, classical voice, and choral performing. I can help students with a variety of goals to performing/ auditioning or music theory, aural skills, and music reading. I have worked with all ages from kindergarten to adult and will gladly work with any age! This past year I had several vocal students and even helped one prepare and audition for the voice department at Miami and they were admitted. In the past few years I have had multiple teaching opportunities through music education courses and also at a local church.
My focus for students is to encourage musical and performance excellence: proper singing t
echniques, learning to read music, and creating characters for repertoire. My approach to teaching voice is different for every student and what they need. But I will challenge every student to always do their best and improve after each and every lesson.
I will NEVER give up on any student!

I was a student of Hayley's during my first semester in college at Miami University. Hayley consistently paid great attention to detail and helped me to improve in any way possible. She truly cared about my development and sought to bring out my best through both instruction and encouragement. Hayley seems to have an excellent handle on elements of vocal technique and teaches them in a way that is easily understandable by music majors and non-music majors alike.

Harness the power of the voice and sing in a way that is healthy for the individual, grow in skill, and radiate confidence.

I have experience instructing students of all ages. My encouraging style is very comforting for you to feel that you can achieve your goals, sing freely and confidently, and enjoy the process while building on your strengths and drawing from your natural gift.

About Lori
Lori grew up overseas & comfortable on stage from a very young age. With a huge love for ensembles and teamwork, harmony came very naturally to her. It was obvious early on that music was life-giving, and a source of joy. She studied music at Azusa Pacific University and received her B.A. in Music, with an emphasis in Church Music and with Voice as her primary instrument, adding on optional classes like Vocal Pedagogy and performing in 5 languages at her Senior Voice Recital. Her most thrilling performance was singing Mahler's 2nd Symphony with the Apollo Chorus of Chicago in downtown Chicago in May 2016. She loves coaching and teaching one-on-one and helping build on the individual's natural gifting and seeing them radiate confidence! She believes the foundations of voice are crucial and open the doors to your musical path.
