Hello! My name is Serena!

Music shapes my life and has made me the person I am today. My experience in training in opera, musical theatre, jazz, and pop has expanded my musical skills and knowledge. Not only have I been trained in performance, but I have also studied music history, music theory, conducting, movement training, ballet, Alexander Technique, acting, yoga, stage craft, improvisation, other languages, diction and the International Phonetic Alphabet, voice science and anatomy, and vocal pedagogy. I have completed my Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the tutelage of the legendary Carol Vaness. I have also studied with acclaimed teachers and coaches around the world including Dr. Kari Ragan and Maestro Dean Williamson.

This year has been w
onderfully packed with performance for Seattle Opera. I just closed out a 78 performance run of CINDERELLA IN SPAIN where I sang the role of CINDERELLA and was even on the poster! I also performed the roles for the Seattle Opera preview performances of GRETEL in HANSEL UND GRETEL, VIOLETTA in LA TRAVIATA, KATYA in KATYA KABANOVA, and QUEEN OF THE NIGHT in MAGIC FLUTE. I made my Seattle Opera debut singing ALITSA and RACCOON in their touring production of "OUR EARTH", as well as performing on the mainstage in many productions. My upcoming performances include singing in the Seattle Opera kick off to the season SUMMERFEST in July; and OLYMPIA in LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN with Pacific Northwest Opera. My other roles include ALKANDRE in PENELOPE with Vespertine Opera in Seattle, WA; FRASQUITA in CARMEN with OperaBend in Bend, Oregon and Pacific Northwest Opera; and SUSANNA in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO with the Seattle Opera Guild. I also made my international debut in December 2014 singing GRETEL in HANSEL UND GRETEL with Opera Mariposa in Vancouver, BC. I have also been the featured soloist as "Christine" in Ten Grand's Phantom of the Opera at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA, and many lead roles in both opera and musical theatre: such as Semele (Semele), Marie (La Fille du Regiment), Gretel (Hansel und Gretel), Countess Ceprano and Gilda (Rigoletto), Blondchen (Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail), Maria (West Side Story), La Fee (Cendrillon), Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls), Cathy (The Last 5 Years), Rosina (Barber of Seville), and more! I have also been part of jazz ensembles, and won the Battle of the Bands at Indiana University with a rock group! I am proud to have won the Seattle Opera Guild/Opera Plus Young Artist Scholarship Award for the 2015/2016 season, the Encouragement Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions, First Place in the National Classical Singers Competition, the C.M. Gerber Scholarship, Music Dean's Scholarship, Music Faculty Award, First Place at Washington State Solo and Ensemble Competitions, First Place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Competitions, and many more!

Teaching brings me such joy! To share the love of music and to educate the musicians of tomorrow is both gratifying and inspiring. I have been teaching since 2005 and provide a fun and focused learning experience where there are no "wrong" questions, and everybody's unique voice is celebrated! Many of my students have gone on to study music in college, and have landed lead roles in musical theatre, choir solos, All State and All Northwest choirs, and won awards in Classical competitions.

*** Lesson Details ***
My studio provides musical knowledge through private lessons including healthy vocal technique, basic understanding of music theory, and basic piano skills. I encourage a fun and focused environment. Come ready to learn, and let's make music!

A typical lesson will include vocalises that detail proper technique, some ear training work, some music theory training, and will be followed by repertoire. During this time, students will learn how to produce clear and authentic diction (English and other languages), breath management, phrase shaping, smooth transitions between higher and lower pitches, stylistic ornamentation, as well as dramatic involvement of the piece.

Students will learn the importance of the foundations of breath support, and how to create a healthy sound for any genre while keeping the unique qualities of their own voice-- no cookie-cutter singers here! Students will also learn how to read music, practice effectively, perform authentically, and take care of their delicate instrument for a lifetime of singing!

While Skype is a marvelous tool that has revolutionized the world of teaching, nothing can replicate natural acoustics. In-studio lessons are suggested for a clearer and more personable lesson.

STUDIO ABSENCE and CANCELLATION POLICIES:
Regularly scheduled and attended lessons are the best way to see positive changes in your voice! The smooth running of the Studio Schedule helps make that happen. Therefore, missing lessons is discouraged and make up lessons/cancellations are not given in the Studio unless:
- I have had a performance or rehearsal that conflicts with our lesson time and cannot have the lesson as scheduled. If this occurs, I will inform you of the event as soon as possible and give you the option of a make up lesson or cancelling the lesson.
- Notices of foreseen cancellations (family vacations, religious holidays, school functions, special occasions etc.) are eligible for rescheduling or cancellation if given before the first lesson of the month.
- Of course, life can throw us for a loop! Illness, emergencies, and unforeseen events may possibly be given make ups or cancellations and will be determined at the Studio's discretion. (In the matter of illness: standard procedure is that if the student can attend work/school, they should come to their lesson. A cold can easily be worked around. If the voice is affected (for singing students), Studio time can still be used to work on ear training, music theory, music history, etc.)

All other absences will result in the lesson being marked as "missed". A hard copy of the Studio Policies and further details will be given to the student at the first lesson. Please feel free to ask any questions or clarifications.

The studio lessons take place in a designated area of my home. The room includes seating for parents to observe lessons as well as a weighted keyboard (88 keys), music stand, desk, and materials. No pets. Lots of street parking is available. Shopping and coffee/food located within walking distance.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

My musical theater career has taken me around the globe from Japan, to the Caribbean as well as numerous cities in the U.S. and Europe! *** Lesson Details ***
My personality is definitely laid back creating a fun atmosphere for lessons. That said, I believe the real fun begins when we cultivate our talents and get opportunities to sing our hearts out!

Lessons usually begin with loosening everything up, as relaxation is imperative to avoiding strain on the voice. Getting loose can be fun and a chance to act silly! Next we move onto learning proper breathing techniques, and practicing exercises that will develop the muscles necessary to produce the most sound while protecting the voice from damage. From there we study ways to warm up the vocal chords. The voice is a muscle and I have found the expression, "Use it or you lose it!" to hold true. Therefore, warming up is just as important as warming up your legs to run track!

The rest of our lesson I like to focus on music selections. We usually watch examples of artists performing the student's choice of music, and then begin either learning the song, or improving a song already learned. Down the road, when songs are performance ready, we will learn proper microphone technique, and try out our songs on mic! Get ready to belt it out!

For acting lessons, I always begin with a few improv warm-ups, and from there move on to the student's choice of monolgue, scene-study or my favorite more improv comedy games!

Lastly, I believe strongly in positivity and creating a comfortable environment for lessons. Sometimes life wears us down, so c'mon in for an uplifting inspiring, encouraging lesson. How should an adult begin private music lessons? First, decide why you want to spend the money, and what you expect to get for your money. Second, plan how you will manage practicing time and location. Third, find a teacher who is experienced and supporting enough to adjust goals to fit your aspirations and purposes without diluting the minimum standards of traditional artistic education. If you're lucky, you'll find one that keeps prices low and schedules flexible.

Armed with a Coe College Bachelor of Music and a Performance Certificate in Vocal Performance from 1981, I (Miss Melodie F.) chose to work in Cos
ta Rica 1982-1984 before calling Chicago home in 1986. My performances have usually been of scored acoustic vocal and choral soprano in mainly traditional formats. I teach private lessons in classical vocal technique from a body awareness perspective, how to sight-read keyboard scores, and music theory translated into something that makes sense.

Consider private singing and voice, music theory, or piano lessons with me. You should sign up for music theory lessons unless you either want to do the physical work it takes to be a better singer, or if you own a "real" piano. Music theory lessons are the most flexible option for general curiosity. The amount of time you should set aside for practicing is an individual estimate. Music Theory assignments should take maybe 45min 3 days a week to accomplish well, but singing or piano should be practiced a minimum of 30-60min 4 or 5 days a week.

Approaching vocal technique from a physical perspective allows us to discover the student's unique and true voice. Reading paper piano music at first sight means you can play it without knowing the song. Music theory is essential to understanding how and why the art works the way it does. Most students need help ditching the confusing silliness they've already been exposed to, and putting together the pieces of the numbers puzzle we call melody, harmony, and rhythm.

Why sing or play piano? Do you want improved balance, posture, relaxation, abdominal strength, confidence, cultural awareness, emotional expression, memory support, and stress relief? You'd be surprised how many people take lessons just to feel better. I can't guarantee you'll have the same results, but I promise you'll know if you want to pay me more money or not after about five lessons.

Label me Traditional, or Classical, or even Persnickety, but we all transcend labels. I can perform opera, simplify unifying concepts, teach folk singing, direct a church choir, suggest country repertoire, coach performance charisma, and even officiate a marriage ceremony as a Dudeist Priest. I also bake a mean pie.

Complete beginners are welcome in all areas. Advanced lessons are available for voice only. In my studio I teach adults only. Singing and voice lessons have minimum 45min duration. Prices for lessons at my studio are $30 for 30min, $41 for 45min, and $50 for 60min. Online lessons, available for singing and theory but not piano, are the same price. Schedule-As-You-Go lessons with no recurring schedule slot are an option, if you prefer that to taking a lesson the same time every single week.

My teaching studio is a residential office on a high second floor walk-up near the intersection of Chicago and Ashland. I might be able to travel within East Village / Ukrainian Village / Wicker Park / Noble Square for an additional $15 travel fee. If I travel to your location, we can negotiate younger ages and group fees.

What do you want to learn? As partners, the student and I build a plan, balancing current aspirations with proven methods. I work with the paper music and workbooks you already own, and TAILOR THE LESSONS TOWARD PRACTICAL VALUE. On the other hand, I believe I have an ethical responsibility to provide a minimum of classical instruction.

Upfront deal breakers:
• Communication outside of lesson time will be mainly internet and email. The email address in your profile must be a valid form of official business communication.
• Students may not bring pets, children, or guests to the lesson. A quietly observing adult guest is welcome with 48-hour notice.
• My students know if they use too much fragrance, whether it be laundry scent boosters or hair treatments, they may be refused entrance into my studio. It's a big deal.
• You pay for any lessons not canceled or rescheduled before the 24-hour deadline, whether you attend or not. Do not be near me when you are contagiously ill. Ask me to forgive late cancellations caused by true emergencies, but realize I don’t have to.
• If you are a singing student, you need a place where you can practice. Prior to your first cancellation deadline, you must read the "Your First Singing Lesson" section found on each Singing or Voice Subject Page.
• If you want to learn how to read keyboard scores or understand how to play keyboard by ear, sign up for Music Theory. If you don’t have regular access to something that can legally be called a piano, including weighted keys and a damper pedal, sign up for Music Theory. Repeat: if you can’t practice on a real piano, don’t take Piano lessons. Music Theory lessons will probably teach you what you want to learn, anyway.

So far I've only had one lesson with Melodie and she really cares to help you achieve what you're trying to accomplish. We went through a few things such as posture, how to breathe, humming, vowels, position of tongue and other things. About myself: I don't know how to sing and this is my first singing lesson.

My lessons with Melodie have been great! She is extremely knowledgeable. I'm a new piano player, and she has been very patient with me as we work our way through the basics. She is great at explaining the theory side in a way I can understand. And the out of class work she suggests not only drives home what we worked on in the lesson, but it also has me playing some basic songs...which is encouraging and keeps practice fun!

Cara is a very patient teacher and is great at making you feel comfortable singing. She has lots of experience as a both teacher and a performer and it shows. I'm a busy person and I don't always have time to practice as much as I should, many music teachers are agressively critical in such situations but Cara is very understanding and teaches at the pace you can manage.

She has the experience to recommend songs which really showcase your voice to the greatest degree but is also is willing to take input on what kind of music you prefer to sing, so you're never bored or out of your depth while practicing.

I'm very glad I found Cara and I can't recommend her services enough.

Throughout the course of your lessons we will work on warm-ups, repertoire (songs), and basic theory (time signatures, note values, chord progressions, etc.). Usually warm-ups and exercises take about 15-20 minutes and the rest of the hour is spent on repertoire. This will vary depending on the student. I think that singing should be fun, so I tailor my teaching to each of my students' individual desires/goals.

Kate is very knowledgeable, and was able to very quickly pick out specific areas where I can improve in my singing. In addition, she has specific exercises and techniques for strengthening the voice and reversing harmful habits, and I found these to be really helpful and effective. I am excited to see the results of lessons with her over the next few months!

Craig, baritone, is an emerging vocal pedagogue. While still young in his field, he believes that the foundation for singing is the same no matter the genre. By observing what each students needs, Craig helps his students achieve their goals, while pushing them to discover new ones as well.

Craig is a Master's Student for Vocal Pedagogy at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where he is the assistant to the program's director. In 2016, he received his BM from Capital University in Vocal Performance, focusing on Opera and Musical Theatre. He firmly believes in challenging oneself to progress with singing.

As a singer, I often hear people from all walks of life lament about their inability to carry a tune and how they wish they had been born with the ability to sing. I believe that everybody has a voice worth sharing and cultivating: the first step in that journey is to find the right voice teacher.

I frequently work with students interested in developing a technique suitable for pop music and musical theater (techniques like belting), as well as students looking to begin or further their training as classically trained singers.

My teaching philosophy utilizes classically informed techniques and methodologies in order to get students to where they want to be: whether you want to sing opera, musical theater, or pop, I will help you to find and nurture your unique voice in a supportive and safe environment.

About Vitalis
Vitalis Im is a tenor and violinist residing in the greater Hudson Valley area. He is a graduate of Bard College, where he studied music, anthropology, and ethnomusicology. His principal teachers include mezzo-soprano Ilka LoMonaco, violist Marka Gustavsson, and violist Anastasia Solberg. He has participated in masterclasses and opera productions with directors including Nic Muni and Rod Gomez.

Recent performances include solo appearances with The Orchestra Now under the baton of Maesto Leon Botstein at the Sosnoff Theater, and the Bard College Conservatory Orchestra at the LUMA Theater, of the Richard B. Center for the Performing Arts in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Recent roles include Sam from Kurt Weill's Street Scene, Eisenstein from Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Tito from Mozart's Clemenza di Tito, and the titular character of Verdi's Don
Carlos at Bard College.

An active chamber and community violinist, Vitalis has performed throughout the Hudson Valley with singer-songwriter Kristin Hoffman, the SUNY Ulster String Ensemble and the Community String Ensemble of the Music Institute of the Sullivan and Ulster Counties as concertmaster and guest soloist, the River Ensemble of the Hudson Valley, an Ellenville-founded orchestra dedicated to the performance of new and original compositions, and the Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra.

Vitalis teaches voice and violin through his studios in Ellenville, NY and Red Hook, NY. He is currently on staff as a voice and violin teacher at the New Windsor Music Academy in New Windsor, NY and the Music Institute of Sullivan and Ulster Counties in Ellenville, NY.

My name is Natalie, I am a teaching-artist originally from Sydney, Australia. I currently reside, perform and teach in the New York and greater New York area.

I am an award-winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer who has toured internationally and an experienced educator. In 2016 I graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters in Jazz Voice Performance. I received my Bachelor of Music from Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia.

Students enhance their understanding of music genres, their overall self-confidence and become self-sufficient and creative problem solvers.
