About Megan
At the age of 4 I began producing musicals in my basement with my sister. This progressed to acting classes, piano lessons, and eventually the school musical in sixth grade. I began taking voice lessons when I was in eighth grade and have never looked back. Through high school, I focused on both classical and musical theatre genres, having leads in high school and community musicals and operettas. While attending the University of Delaware for my Bachelor of Music, I majored in Applied Music: Voice and had the privilege of performing lead roles in Sweeney Todd, The Pirates of Penzance, The Marriage of Figaro, and Die Fledermaus. In addition, I performed two recitals. I was also fortunate enough to be a member of the University of Delaware Chorale, traveling to both China and Spain for tours and competitions. I then attended UD for my Mast
er of Music in Vocal Performance where I maintained a full studio of undergraduate voice minors as a Graduate Teaching assistant.

I took my first pedagogy class at UD and began teaching voice lessons at the Community Music School during my junior year. My experience as a teaching assistant shaped me into the teacher that I am today. I love teaching and helping students reach goals! With my thorough pedagogical training and varied performance experience, I have a great deal to offer my students.

Megan was the best voice teacher I've had. She was very personable and friendly and more importantly, she was very supportive of my goals. She really emphasized bringing out the 'free' voice as opposed to just molding it towards a particular style, which helped boost my confidence. Highly recommended!

Meg creates a very welcoming and nurturing environment where students feel safe to grow and learn.

Meg is a wonderful teacher who I would recommend to anybody. One of the things I loved about her was how patient she was with me, even when I became frustrated with myself. She creates an open and warm environment where I felt free to make mistakes and explore my voice, but would always have learned something new at the end of each lesson.

I have been professionally singing and taking voice lessons since the age of 9! I went through various styles in my love and performance of music, starting with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and all of Motown, Jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), R&B, and Classical/Opera (starting when I was in high school and attending Interlochen Arts Camp)...

Having received a Bachelor's of Music in Voice (Music Theatre Performance) from NYU, I stayed in NYC after graduation performing in musical theatre and theatre, mostly in the city.

In 2009, I decided to apply to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, with the intent to broaden my range of skill and opportunity as a performer, but also with the intention to teach, with the higher degree strengthening this possibility. I began to teach voice lessons to fellow students while at LAMDA. When I returne
d to NYC, I began to build my own voice studio in of post-graduate students and adults looking to further develop their vocal practice or begin a vocal practice. I found that in my vocal lessons, I was using physical exercises as for the actor, to incorporate in my private teaching method. I believe in doing, not only watching and observing. This, in conjunction with movement and full-body execution, opens the student vocally and emotionally. I chose to go to LAMDA because the classical training and approach to theatre training in England is extremely physical. They work from the outside in, and I find that the language of the body is universal to students of any intellectual capacity, and I strive to bring this into my approach in any type of teaching format!

I teach voice lessons to adults and young students who are beginning their vocal training practice, as well as those who are accomplished singers and performers and want to take their singing and performance to the next level! WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch

Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA

I love showing off my new and improved voice.

When I started with Jennifer my throat hurt and was sore when I sing.By my third lesson no pain ,soreness. I sing in the Times Square Church Choir ,now my voice is amazing, I can sing high notes and don't have to panic about my voice. Thank you Jennifer I am excited about this journey my voice and I am on with you and looking foward to the wonderful job you will be doing with my voice.

Great voice teacher, with an amazing voice and technique

I took voice lessons with Jen in high school and college, and always had a positive experience. I started when I was at LaGuardia High School, and the singing lessons weren't enough at school. Although I do mostly musical theater now, I had to study both opera and lyrical music in high school and college, and Jen was able to coach me on songs I needed to have ready for exams and juries. However, most of our sessions were singing lessons (not coaching). A great perk was that she gave me recordings of our lessons which I could listen to later with comments from her, and that I could practice along with. She has a massive voice, and taught me a lot of technical skills about projecting and sustaining my breath.

I've found that some teachers have been out of the loop of performing and singing professionally for so long, that they forget what it's like to be the student taking lessons. But Jen is still involved in the business, so she's familiar with what does and doesn't work in a lesson. She's also really nice, which is always a pleasure.

Plus, if you get lucky, her partner might be available to accompany the lesson at the end so you can sing it full-out to her, like a real audition, or jury.

I - Silent Foundation

The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.

II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors

This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Previously I have performed in the Anything Goes National Tour as the quartet tenor and a primary dancer. Before this, I had appeared in shows at Pittsburgh's prestigious theatre, The Pittsburgh CLO, most recently performing in their production of The
Wedding Singer and previously as The Production Tenor in Singin’ in the Rain and Garvin in Footloose. Other theatre credits include multiple shows at Music Theatre of Wichita, West Virginia Public Theatre and The Connecticut Repertory Theatre, all of which have taught me what it takes to become a successful musical theatre performer in this competitive era.

I love teaching all students, but in particular high school students who are aspiring to attend college as a musical theatre major, non-theatre majors who are new to singing and want a stronger technical background, or actors who are new to the musical theatre scene and are looking to take their talent to the next level. I have a strong knowledge of repertoire ranging from contemporary musical theatre to golden age to opera/operetta. I have performed in musicals, operettas, plays, and have started my own collegiate a cappella group, The Statesmen. At Penn State, I was trained to not only teach musical theatre repertoire, but to include art songs and arias as well which have their own tool in a student's growth and versatility.

Most importantly, I like to have fun in the studio. I have a very open and goofy personality and want you to feel free to be goofy as well. Dare to fail. You may learn more from your voice cracking then you might from singing a beautiful note.

There is something special that music does to the soul. Singing expresses the emotions that are trapped in our hearts. My goal is to tap inside singers natural voices and pull out what is already inside. I teach voice techniques, pitch and rhythm as well as help the singer find their voice that is hidden.

I am a professional opera singer with 8 years of teaching background.
I received my Artist Diploma from the Mannes School of Music, Master of Music from SUNY Purchase, and Bachelor of Music from California State University Long Beach.

I believe that healthy singing starts at the premises of classical singing and technique, which incorporates proper breath control and proper connection to the rest of the body i.e. larynx, tongue, throat, etc. Proper technique should be set into foundation in order for the music you want to create with your creative expressions to come out, and I will help you get there!

A lesson with me will include a warm-up, which will give me an idea of where we need to work, and we can discuss and interpret technique, vocal production, and tonality. We would apply this into the piece(s) you are currently working on. Then we would proceed to phrasing and stylistic approaches!

John Kun Park is a recent graduate of the Mannes School of Music. He completed studies in Operatic Performance at SUNY Purchase. John will be joining the Sarasota Opera's Apprentice Artist program in the beginning of 2018.

The 2016-17 season found John in his final year of Artist Certification at the Mannes School. He was the tenor soloist in Händel's Messiah in Manhasset, NY, and then appeared as Anatol with Mannes Opera in their Spring production of Barber's Vanessa. He placed as one of six finalists for the New Jersey State Opera's Alfredo Silipigni competition shortly thereafter. John was invited to Central City Opera as an Apprentice Artist for their esteemed Bonfils-Stanton Young Artist Program. He was cast as the cover of Don José for the season of Bizet's Carmen, and debuted as Don José for the company's Apprentice produc
tion.

The summer of 2016 found John in the Dolomites of Italy, appearing as Don José in Bizet's Carmen under Music Academy International's affiliation of the Trentino Music Festival, under the baton of Christopher Larkin and direction of David Gately. He appeared a finalist in New York's Joy of Singing competition in the Spring of 2016, and was hired to cover Don José for Venture Opera's winter production of Carmen.

During his time at SUNY Purchase, John appeared as Le Prince Charmant in Massenet's Cendrillon, Eisenstein in J. Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His studies while in Los Angeles found John appearing as Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon, and B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly under the Opera Gang company.
