About Stephen
Want to belt like Adele, riff like the Weeknd, rock like Imagine Dragons? Broadway dreams? Movies?

Hi, I'm Stephen.

I'm a vocal trainer, acting coach, and songwriting teacher. My specialty is pop/rock, on camera, and helping songwriters find their voice, both lyrically and sonically.

Tap Into Your Artistry (TIYA) is the ultimate online gym for your voice. The fastest and most efficient way to build and condition your voice using simple, safe, and systematic vocal exercises that embrace a Zen like approach with an athletic mentality.

I'm also an AEA and SAG-AFTRA actor and ASCAP songwriter and producer. If you want to learn more about acting in movies, performing on Broadway, writing your own songs, and developing show-biz career strategy, I help TIYA members every day achieve their artistic dreams.

MORE INFO:
I have
been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Whistle Down the Wind." Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," "The Wild Party," and "She Loves Me."

As an ASCAP recording artist, currently I am working in the studio with a full production team on my first pop/rock album. I also often sing on demos for producers and write songs for other artists in many different genres.

As a TV/Film actor, I have booked lead roles in 4 SAG-AFTRA short films, as well as the comedic lead in a SAG-AFTRA Web-series. I was called back for producers as a Series Regular for "The Knick," an episodic series produced and directed by Steven Soderbergh on Cinemax.

My audition prep will help you master your sides for any playing space; Broadway plays/musicals and especially on camera.

TIYA clients include (aspiring) Broadway performers, Film and TV actors, singer-songwriters, news anchors, dancers, comedians, CEO's all over the world, as well as karaoke enthusiasts, and songwriting hobbyists.

My TIYA members have performed on television in Smash, Glee, and venues around NYC ranging from The Underground, Le Poisson Rouge, Drom, Cornelia Street Cafe, Arlene’s Grocery, to the Broadway productions of Ghost, Sister Act, Evita, Wicked, West Side Story, South Pacific, The Phantom of the Opera, and Rent to name a few.

*** Lesson Details ***
We will always work on whatever you want.

For Singing, as a vocal technician/trainer I am like going to the gym for your voice. My exercises are safe, simple, and most importantly, I teach you how to practice correctly.

For ACTing, we can explore both the foundation itself with monologues and scenes, as well as the tricks of the trade mastering the camera frame and how to create memorable auditions for TV/Film.

For Songwriting, we can explore the fundamentals of both lyrics and music, as well as catchy hooks, production, and song structure.

You may use my time however you wish (Voice, Acting, Songwriting, or Artistic/Career guidance).

Most vocal sessions will usually be a combination of strengthening/ conditioning exercises, and then exploring/performing a song.

Most ACTing sessions will be theatre monologues, TV/Film sides and/or On camera auditioning craft.

Career consultations usually include how to get an agent, headshots, branding, and marketing to align your artistic dreams with a strategy for success.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yamaha PSR 950 61-key arranger keyboard

Concepts explored include: Coordination, Registration, and Intonation. Chest, Head, Edge, and Pharyngel registration, 2 instruments in 1, posture, breath management, vocal cord adduction, trigger phrases, ring, consistency, and more.

Katie is an ok teacher but I had a bad experience regarding a missed lesson. I was charged for a lesson ($60) that I cancelled 10 minutes prior to start time but called back 15 minutes later (that would be 5 minutes into our lesson time) to say we could make it. Katie had moved up another student and could not do our lesson but charged us any way!! If we were going to be charged for an hour of her time, she should have been available during that hour or at least given us 15- 20 minutes like the other teachers do. Also, if she moved up another student, why not let us take his spot?? The reason for their rule of charging for missed lessons is because the teacher misses out on that hour of income. Well she made double time during my paid hour!! What bothers me even more is that she cancelled one of our lessons just 2 hours before it was supposed to begin, and I was very understanding and accommodating. I did not give her a hard time or complain at all and just rescheduled. She didn't even consider returning the favor. Her lack of ethics really bothers me! Don't expect any favors from this one, she's all about the bucks!!! One word, "karma".

About Justin
Can you rely on your voice to always be there for you? After singing, does your throat hurt? Do you want to learn how to belt? Can you let it rip when no one's watching but you choke up when you step in front of a microphone? Do you want to learn a vocal technique that just works?

We welcome all levels of experience and styles of voice. Become the singer you were meant to be!

Justin Pollinger is a vocal coach, singer, performer, and educator based out of Jersey City, NJ.

During his high school years, Justin discovered his passion for music and education. Kenneth Brown, his former choral teacher, and mentor recognized Justin's untapped potential. He taught him the fundamentals of choral conducting, vocal technique, music theory, ear training and repertoire selection. Justin was a member of the award-winning Edison High School Choi
rs, NJ All State Choir and the NJ Region II Chorus.

Justin has spent 14 years studying under some of the best vocal coaches in New York and New Jersey, including Sarah Bachman Krieger (Manhattan School of Music, The Juilliard School), Steven Schnurman (The Juilliard School) and; Katherine Wessinger (University of Michigan). He currently studies under Melissa Perry (Westminster Choir College, Temple, and post-graduate work included 750 hours with Maestro Vittorio Rosetta of La Scala) While doing studies at Westminster Choir College, he studied with Tenor Eric Rieger (Eastman School of Music).

Justin founded and directed The A Cappella Choir of Middlesex County. After a successful first year and a full-length album, The A Cappella Choir sang at Carnegie Hall for the premiere of Eric Whitacre's electronic opera "Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings"

Justin was the head of the choral department at the New Dover United Methodist Church in Edison, NJ. He directed and musically directed production's of The Rocky Horror Show at the Villagers Theater in Somerset, which subsequently moved to The Den Nightclub and ran for 2 consecutive years.

Justin has organized, directed and performed in fundraisers for the Edison high school Choral program, the program that first honed his raw talent and a place that to this day he still can call a home.

As a performer, Justin was seen as a backup singer in the Bryan Hansen band. He has participated in theater all over NJ and is frequently hired for studio session work. He recently contributed backing vocals for Mike Wells' upcoming third studio album.

Justin has been teaching privately since 2007 (Justin Pollinger Vocal Studio). His Students have been accepted to some of the top music programs in the country including Westminster Choir College, Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Mason Gross School School of the Arts, The Hart School and AMDA.

"Justin is so much fun to work with and always makes me feel good about performing, even when I get discouraged. He has helped me to discover a side of my voice that I didn't even know I had."
- Debbie Lingel

"Justin has been a miracle worker with my vocal development. I have gone through several instructors for numerous years and no one could tell me how to actually find my own voice. Justin was able to do that immediately and I was sold! Since then it has been a gratifying experience with our weekly lessons. Knowing I have Justin's techniques in my arsenal of tools make me a much more confident artist on stage. I can't thank him enough!

I went to Rutgers: Mason Gross School of the Arts for Vocal Performance as a freshman in Fall 2008; by the Spring of 2009, I was no longer a music student. Singing quickly became a laborious activity instead of an enjoyable past time; I felt as if I became incapable of adequately expressing myself because I was bogged down by a pretentious atmosphere and a teacher who lacked any sort of gravitational pull. Justin is the complete opposite.

I started studying with Justin in September 2013. He's so incredibly realistic. He lacks any form of pretense and his personality is so magnetic. Every time I walk into my lesson, I'm ready to go. He creates an atmosphere that is just so easy to adjust to, and he listens. I'm so grateful to have found him. In a little less than a year, he's helped me restore confidence in my vocal ability and gain back years of lost discipline in such a short time. He will hold you accountable without alienating you and for me that's invaluable. If you're looking for someone warm, but disciplined, Justin is your guy.

Working with Justin has helped me make enormous strides musically! Our lessons have transformed my voice, prepared me for the competitive world of singing, and given me the confidence and knowledge needed to succeed. In just one or two lessons I progressed in ways I never thought I could and opened up to different techniques that I did not even know existed. Justin is fun and easy to work with. His encouragement and spirit will push you to reach new heights and truly refine your vocal technique.

Working with Justin has given me utmost confidence in my singing. He has taught me invaluable vocal techniques that previous coaches never taught me. Since I started with Justin, I feel that my voice has become stronger and it still continues to grow! I would recommend Justin to anyone for vocal instruction. Great, effective lessons for a cheap price!

Recent graduate from New York University Steinhardt with my Masters of Vocal Performance and Advance Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy. I have been singing since i was 5 years old starting in church with cherub choir and christmas plays and then moving on to school musicals and summer theatre. Though my training is in classical voice/opera, I have a huge love and background of Musical Theatre. I also am very up to date with the music and personally enjoy indie rock/ electro-pop/ indie-pop. I love learning and teaching new styles of singing and firmly believe that classical technique can pave the way to all types of performing from rock to jazz to gospel and even rap. I love having fun with my students and laughing but know how to keep on task and get things rolling.

Corinne was a wonderful teacher! She was very professional and structured her lessons with clarity and rigor. She gave me detailed feedback and the vocal exercises she recommended were always helpful and tailored to the areas in which I needed to improve. If I didn't get something immediately, she wouldn't give up but lead me through a series of exercises until my vocal tone was satisfactory. No matter how busy or tired she was, she would conduct each lesson with the same amount of attention and energy. She's friendly and understanding, great to talk to and easy to get along with. I definitely recommend her as a teacher!
