I have been teaching voice for about 5 years now, and am an active performer myself in music theatre and opera. In lessons I work with my students on singing without counterproductive tension and learning to use their breath to support the sound in a way that’s healthy and will keep them singing their whole lives. I create a safe, supportive atmosphere where the student is comfortable to experiment, because I know from experience that is how real learning and expression happens. My performing experience and education allow me to also coach my students in musicality, style, and diction as well so they have all the tools to be elegant, communicative singers. I not only help the students understand what’s going on physically with their body and their instrument, but also give them ideas for ways to practice what they’re learning so they can be their own best teacher in between lessons. I am able to record lessons for my students so they can listen back and hear how the exercises we do in

About Emily
Singing and playing piano have always been a huge part of my life. I love to perform everything from opera and sacred music to music theater and jazz, and have been performing since I was very young. I earned my Bachelor’s of Music in vocal performance from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. It was there that I fell in love with teaching, when I taught my first student as part of a course in vocal pedagogy. Since then I have built my studio to over 20 voice and piano students here in NY and CT. It has been thrilling to see all the progress they've made! I just completed my Masters of Music at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College.

I have had several excellent and truly inspiring teachers myself with different teaching styles, and so I have a variety of approaches to drawn upon in helping my own students. Vocal techni
que was not something that came easy for me, and was something I had to really work on. This work on technique has made me a stronger teacher. I know how many different approaches it can take to make something click, so I use the diverse experiences of my own studies to find what works best for each student. While I am classically trained, I am comfortable teaching all types of singers, because I believe that at its core, what makes a singer great is the same between all genres. My number one goal in teaching is to help my students use their voice in a way that is healthy and allows them the greatest ability for expression, because ultimately, I believe that is what music is about.

Although singing has been a big part of my professional work in the past few years, I have also been playing classical piano since I was four and still love to play and share this love with my students. Most of my students are piano students, and I love seeing the progress they've made over the years. Students that started with me as beginners a few years ago are now reading music with confidence and playing works by Mozart and Beethoven.

I am an active performer and am able to draw upon this experience in my teaching. This summer I performed in Manhattan with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble and won 2nd prize in their dell'Arte/Jeiven Awards. Past roles include Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at Brooklyn College and Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Connecticut Lyric Opera. Other roles include April in Company with Westport Community Theatre, Despina (cover) in Mozart's Così fan tutte for Connecticut Lyric Opera, the messenger in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at DePaul University, and Maria in West Side Story with the McLeod Summer Playhouse. I have a special love for early music and have performed oratorio by Bach with the DePaul Baroque Ensemble and as part of the Bethesda Music Series in New Haven. I also participated in the prestigious Amherst Early Music Festival for two years. I have performed abroad in Austria and Italy, and speak French, Italian, and some German. Because of my experience on stage in opera , music theatre, and recitals, I understand the skills it takes to engage an audience and create a well-rounded performance. I am thus an asset to any student preparing for a contest, audition, or stage appearance.

Rina is a fabulous instructor. My son originally contacted Rina after researching piano teachers in our area. She came highly recommended and as a result he gave me a gift of five piano lessons to start. I became hooked; I've been with Rina for well over a year now and thoroughly enjoy learning. Her background in music is broad and she is creative in her approach to teaching.
The experience has been extremely rewarding for me and I look forward to continuing my journey into piano with Rina for many sessions to come.

*** Lesson Details ***
What happens in a Lesson? In order to train your physical voice, it is necessary to do vocal exercises, in the same way that one needs to train at a gym. There is no "magic key" to unlock one's voice; it is a matter of daily practice and muscle strengthening/stretching. So, the first part of the lesson will be focused on vocal exercises specifically tailored to YOUR VOICE and its needs. The second half of the lesson is the fun part- SINGING! We will work on any songs and styles that YOU choose. Whether you want to sing Rock, Country, Pop, Musical Theater, or Classical, there is a healthy and communicative way to sing!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a keyboard. The student should provide a recording device, iPhone, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Classical and Broadway style singing, but have extensive experience in Contemporary Commercial Music as well. I teach a healthy approach to all styles, and modify technical approaches towards the genre that the student is most interested in.

Patricia is an AMAZING teacher.

Personality: She is very welcoming, warm, funny and just a positive person to be around which bodes very well when it comes to learning and stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Knowledge: Just by looking at her credentials you know that she has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to music. However, her greatest gift is being able to relay all of that information to someone who may not have a very strong musical background. She is also very adept at making connections making the learning process fun and understandable.

Lessons: I have been taking lessons with Patricia for months now for voice. The greatest part of the lessons are that she does not only focus on improving your voice on a technical level. She helps with mental preparation, ear training, music theory and great deal of other things which helps students to become more well rounded. I believe this also helps students to grow in their area of study much faster.

Misc: Patricia greatly encourages her students to perform. If you are not comfortable going to an open mic, Patricia hosts a performance event for her students. This provides a safe and secure environment for students to express themselves an apply what they have learned in lessons.

I recently performed and while nervous the mental preparation that I described above helped me to "put on a show". I will continue taking lessons with Patricia and I am grateful for everything I have learned and experience in my time.

Kate's wonderful talent for music is impressive and so is her teaching method.
I started off knowing basically nothing and had no sense of rhythm. Although I knew it was going to be challenging, I was determined to have fun while learning, no matter what - and picking Kate as my teacher was a very fortunate decision.
I am so glad that throughout the course of two months, I was able to learn how to play some of my favorite songs on the uke and also was gifted with precious tips and tricks to improve my practice in the long term!
Kate is patient, sweet and will amaze you with her skills - and you'll also be amazed by how much you can learn in one hour with her. I'd rate the classes with 10 stars if that was even possible :)

Thanks so much Kate!

She challenged me but also knew what I could and could not handle. She also listened well and followed the style I liked. I definitely became a better singer because of her, and still use of some of her warm ups today when I get opportunities to sing. I miss having her around in Pittsburgh!

Each lesson includes studies of fundamental technique, ear training and repertoire development in order to facilitate the development of a whole musician.

About Natalie
Hello, and thank you for your interest!

My name is Natalie, I am a teaching-artist originally from Sydney, Australia. I currently reside, perform and teach in the New York and greater New York area.

I am an award-winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer who has toured internationally and an experienced educator. In 2016 I graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters in Jazz Voice Performance. I received my Bachelor of Music from Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia.

“A teaching artist, by definition, is a two-career professional: a working artist and a working educator. As a working artist is they are involved in an ongoing process of discovery, problem solving, discipline and refinement of skills in their discipline. As a working educator, it is essential that the artist is al
so developing a knowledge base and skills to be an effective partner in education. Achieving a meaningful balance between these two professions, whereby one feeds the other, is an ongoing process that requires a deepening awareness for the teaching artist of what their teaching brings to their art and what their art teaches them about learning.”

I pride myself in creating a fun and safe learning environment in which I establish a firm musical foundation for my students. Lessons include: vocal scales and etudes, lyric interpretation, stagecraft skills, repertoire development and a foundation of the technical elements of the voice or instrument, and exploration and development of timbre, genres and music history. I teach a large variety of musical genres including jazz, pop, rock, rn'b, theater, reggae and classical music.

Simultaneously, my students cultivate many other skills while learning voice. Students enhance their understanding of music genres, their overall self-confidence and become self-sufficient and creative problem solvers. I am passionate about educating and empowering my students and I enjoy connecting with a wide array of musicians of all ages, playing levels and backgrounds.

Feel free to contact me to inquire about lessons, I hope to hear from you soon!
