I began my partnership with takelessons in 2013 and teach my students at my home teaching studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. My studio is comfortable and creative.

As a highly experienced online music instructor (Takelessons Live, Skype, FaceTime and G+) I’ve helped Takelessons launch/beta test exciting new teaching platforms. I began teaching music as a teenager and have worked with students of all ages and skill levels. I have had the pleasure of coaching well-known musicians/celebrities, being an on-set tutor for feature films, and coached singers through their recording sessions. I treat my novice/hobbyist students with the same enthusiasm and professionalism as my advanced students, giving my very best to all my clients.

Additionally, I work with many stu
dents to prepare for high school/college/conservatory admission, casting calls for TV/Film, major tour auditions, and industry showcases.

I'm the vocalist, lead guitarist & songwriter for a well-known touring rock band with a worldwide fan base and nearly 4 million You Tube views. I graduated from New York University with Bachelor's of Music in Jazz guitar and trained with the most highly respected rock/pop vocal coaches in the world. Lead / Rhythm Guitar:

I've developed a step-by-step approach to learning to solo and improvise.
Using simple, "guitarist-friendly” techniques you will quickly learn and begin to apply major/minor scales/modes, blues/pentatonic scales and “licks.” You will learn triads, arpeggios, interval studies, and extensions and how to use them to create interesting and melodic solos. With my line development/phrasing techniques, you will have your own library of “licks” that will help you navigate both simple and sophisticated harmonic progressions. I will help you to become a become a well-rounded, three-dimensional guitarist with a unique voice!

A few of techniques I teach:

∙ triads / arpeggios
∙ strumming
∙ alternate/sweep picking
∙ tremolo picking
∙ hybrid picking
∙ scales/modes
∙ slide guitar
∙ hammer on/pull off
∙ (up to 8 finger) tapping
∙ bending / double stops / unison bends
∙ whammy bar techniques
∙ diagonal scales,
∙ arpeggios & note groupings
∙ 3 and 4 finger per string scales
∙ fingerstyle
∙ Jazz scales, chords including
4 note open/closed voicing
7th, 9th, 11th, 13th chords
∙ chord melodies
∙ rhythm and grooves of various styles

Bass Guitar:

Right hand:
∙ finger style, pick
∙ slapping/popping
∙ groove, rhythms and playing time
∙ time signatures, walking bass lines,
∙ arpeggios, double stops,
∙ chords & improvising
∙ writing bass lines.

All of my students learn:

Sight reading (standard notation/tablature)
∙ music theory & ear training
∙ rhythm / timing (including reading rhythms)
∙ composition/songwriting

We will focus 1/2 of the lesson on repertoire and 1/2 the lesson on technique. Many of my students text/email me a few days prior to our scheduled lesson with a song selection for the week. I focus our lesson's technical study with the song in mind. It has proven to be very effective and makes the technique and theory are less "boring."

Studio Equipment
I have (7) guitars: including (4) electric, (2) acoustic/electric, & (3) electric bass
(2) tube guitar amplifiers, and various guitar effects pedals.

(1) full-size 88-key MIDI keyboard, and (1) Arturia MINILAB MIDI controller.

Also, I have an assortment of industry standard dynamic & condenser microphones for live performance and recording applications.

DAW recording software (Pro Tools 12.x, Logic 10.x, Ableton Live)
software synthesizers by Arturia, Fabfilter, Native Instruments, Spectrasonics, Steven Slate, Toontrack and more. I use plugin effects by Izotope, Fabfilter, Plugin Alliance and Universal Audio and Waves for many of my lessons and recording projects.

Travel Equipment
I can provide a guitar, videos, music recording, music workbooks and everything else a student may need. Students are only expected to bring a desire to learn. :)

Specialties

I am a performer with a ton of touring/stage experience, a composer who understands the art of writing and a producer who is fluent in the latest recording technology. In addition to technical studies, my students receive performance coaching/career development. I will help you to find your unique voice, a polished and distinct sound, and your true personality as an artist. I am 100% committed to making you a success!

I will ignite a new, or recharge/rekindle your passion for music, and to sing/play the music you love a lot better!

I have been singing since I was a boy. I have been in multiple choirs, ensembles, and voice teams over the years as well as established myself as a solid vocalist. I currently sing in front of hundreds of people a week and on occasion even thousands. I'm looking for students of all ages and levels. If you have never performed and you'd like to build the confidence along with your skill set please enroll. I have had many students who have won auditions and one who even auditioned for " The Voice ". Vocal mastery is a life-long journey that will be filled with hard work, passion and emotion. It's NOT easy to be a great vocalist but it's EXTREMELY easy to get better every week. As a vocal coach I enjoy working students through their struggles and achieving goals. I will tell you that MOST people want to extend their range not knowing that they #`1 just need to know how to use their range and #2 neglect their tone, breath control, diction, endurance, and dynamics. The thing that is about

About Jeremiah
Hello, My name is Jeremiah and I'm excited to be your teacher. Music has been in my blood since birth. I come from a family of singers and performers. I started my musical journey as boy singing in choirs. In middle school I picked up the saxophone, in high school I started guitar, and I've been playing the keyboard all along the way. At this time I perform in churches, conventions, coffee shops and public events using my voice, guitar and keyboard. Music is my passion and teaching music is the way I can contribute to this generation.

What I can offer you is the ability to play or sing any song you want within a few short lessons and all popular music in a little as six weeks. Even though teaching music is what I do I love to connect with people in general. There are principles in music that can be used in life : diligence, self-worth
, pride, and focus are just a few. I'm looking forward to meeting you and helping you meet your goals. Thanks for stopping by!!!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a very easy going person. I like to wear a smile and have fun. With that being said, you can expect me to politely influence a student to go the extra mile. I do make things clear when it comes to practicing and effort but you'll be happy finding out how easy that can be. In 6 weeks you can expect a student to be playing full songs in different keys and vocalists to become more comfortable with the vocal instrument they were born with. Thereafter, is entirely up to what a student wants to do with their talent. Within 3 to 6 months a student should be comfortable playing or singing in front of a family crowd or even publicly.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have keyboards, guitars, basses, plenty of chairs, rooms, whiteboards and amps. Bring a notebook and mobile device.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Instrument (guitar or keyboard) and amplifier (if electric). Writing paper.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in worship music, gospel, alternative rock, pop, fusion, r&b, motown, neo-soul and jazz. Using the circle of 5ths as well as the number system I've been able to teach students how to play any song they want in any key on their own.

I’m a Theatre Major from UCSD. I've studied music since my early teens, and have played and performed for over a decade. I love music, and I love creating art. If you’re looking for a by the book instructor (here follow the instructions in your music book) I’m probably not a good fit. Music is fun and should be taught that way. But that does not mean you shouldn’t learn the foundation of good technique and how to master those skills. I enjoy teaching as much as I do playing or performing. That is why I do it. I offer lessons in American traditional singing (including Southern Mountain style) and in traditional Irish singing (in both English and Irish Gaelic). I help students improve their vocal technique, while encouraging them to step outside the pop and classical vocal idioms to learn how to sing in traditional idioms, including (depending on preference) suitable melodic ornamentation.

I do not have a piano for lessons - only a recorder or violin to establish pitch, as well as accompanying instruments like guitar and dulcimer.

Student Comments:

"Many people are talented as performers but not gifted as instructors--Julie is most definitely both. She uses her keen ear to let you know your strengths, and finds productive ways to help you improve weak points. She lives and breathes traditional music and it is always a true delight to learn from her." –Sierra-Maria Magdalena, traditional Irish singing student

“Julie H. brings to her teaching a perfect combination of knowledge ...

About Julie
I am a professional musician, specializing in traditional American and Irish music and song; I can, however, also teach classical guitar and beginning-intermediate violin. My CD, "American Stranger," has received critical acclaim and I have authored two books on DADGAD guitar for Mel Bay Publications.

I taught myself guitar at the age of thirteen, but took three years of lessons at Washington University, where I also studied English and French. As an adult I became interested in fingerstyle guitar in open tunings, especially DADGAD. I am, however, happy to teach in standard tuning--including basic guitar proficiency, classical guitar, and "folk" guitar.

I have played violin since I was eleven, taking lessons until the age of sixteen and playing in both high school orchestra and the local youth symphony. I later learned to sus
pend much of my classical technique in order to play both old-time and traditional Irish fiddle as authentically as possible; but I still retain my initial training and apply good basic violin technique to my fiddle and (of course) her violin teaching, while tailoring it to the musical idioms of each of students.

I have also studied voice, which again, however, I have never allowed to interfere with my performance of traditional songs--largely because I had developed a traditional approach to the singing of both American southern mountain repertory and traditional Irish song many years before receiving any formal instruction. This training, however, has given me greater insight into how to get the most out of your voice for almost any style.

I also taught myself to play lap dulcimer, basing my approach on the Eastern Kentucky styles associated with Jean Ritchie, Barbara Edwards, and Anne MacFie—that is, primarily using a small dowel stick or noter to sound the melody, and playing counter-melodies for song accompaniments.

My clawhammer banjo-playing is influenced by various Appalachian instrumentalists and accompanists (including Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, Hobart Smith, and Lily May Ledford), but my style is also influenced by years of playing with midwestern and southern-style fiddlers.

I welcome students ages 10 or above, and have learned to adapt my teaching style to the individual student, helping each one to make the most of his or her talents and enthusiasms, while emphasizing sound technique and good practice habits.

I also teach academic subjects, especially English (in which I hold a Ph.D.) and French (in which I hold a B.A.). In English, I emphasize good grammar and solid composition skills and try to get my students as excited as I am about everything from sentence structure to Shakespeare.

I have been taking lessons in classical style guitar from Julie for about two years. She has patiently brought me through increasingly more difficult technique by choosing a wide variety of challenging but enjoyable pieces to practice. I am gradually working my way up the fret towards the 5th position. She has helped me with theory, including rhythm, the major and minor scales and chord building. Her empathy is a particular blessing for me because of my poor eyesight and the arthritis in my wrists, hands and fingers.”

I felt like I learned more with just my first lesson with Julie than I did in multiple lessons with other instructors.

I am only interested in learning frailing/claw hammer and that is what Julie teaches, and teaches well. Other instructors which I have had in the past only give a nod to claw hammer and want to focus on Scruggs style picking which, while I love listening to it, holds no appeal to me for playing.

I finally have hope that I may actually learn to play banjo.
