I offer lessons in American traditional singing (including Southern Mountain style) and in traditional Irish singing (in both English and Irish Gaelic). I help students improve their vocal technique, while encouraging them to step outside the pop and classical vocal idioms to learn how to sing in traditional idioms, including (depending on preference) suitable melodic ornamentation.

I do not have a piano for lessons - only a recorder or violin to establish pitch, as well as accompanying instruments like guitar and dulcimer.

Student Comments:

"Many people are talented as performers but not gifted as instructors--Julie is most definitely both. She uses her keen ear to let you know your strengths, and finds productive ways to help you improve weak points. She lives and breathes traditional music and it is always a true delight to learn from her." –Sierra-Maria Magdalena, traditional Irish singing student

I don't just teach students to read the notes and rhythms. Understanding theory, using technique, and creating from the inside out (internalize the meaning to produce sound) is necessary to really make music.

About Amy

I am passionate about music, playing the piano, and teaching. I currently study with a doctor of music in California, and I just completed a master's degree in church music. My goal is to give students all the tools they need to learn and understand music in a way that excites them to progress

Amy is an amazing teacher! I've studied piano under her both in person and online, and either way, she is excellent. She is always positive about what I can do, yet can point out ways to improve more. She listens to what I want to accomplish and finds various ways to incorporate what I want with what I need. She inspires me to want to do more than I thought I could do, and to always think bigger than the picture. My online piano lessons have become a highlight of my week, and something that I truly look forward to because I know that Amy will be excited to hear what I have worked on, and her enthusiasm further propels my motivation to excel.

"Lauren Thomas is an excellent musician with a tremendous amount of patience and a seemingly boundless supply of talents. As a fellow musician who has played professionally alongside Lauren, I have witnessed first hand her skilled mastery of both the flute and the violin -- as intuitive as she is technically proficient. Apart from her musical abilities, she's kind, fun and sensitive and would make for either a great beginner violin teacher or as an instructor for someone with intermediate skills looking to expand their abilities. Cannot recommend her highly enough! Whether you're seeking instruction in the flute or the violin, Lauren's the woman for the job."

Are Piano Lessons on DVD Worth It?

Thinking about purchasing a piano lessons DVD program? Here, Brick, NJ teacher Elizabeth C. shares her thoughts on this method of learning, and if it's really the best way to go... You have probably seen the infomercials marketing piano lessons on DVD that guarantee you will be “playing the piano in six weeks or your money back.” These programs may be beneficial in teaching piano basics, but fall short in providing methodology that fosters long-term piano success or song versatility. …
