I am not a highly trained singer, but I have taken many voice lessons over the years from various teachers, ranging from western classical teachers to Hindustani classical teachers. My guitar students are routinely made to sing, and I think singing is at the heart of all musical expression. I would love to help you find your voice.

About Luke
I majored in music at Berea College, then went on to The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I completed a Masters degree in guitar performance and served as the graduate assistant to the guitar department.

For the past ten years I have earned a living performing and teaching guitar. I am a certified Suzuki instructor, and I've held teaching positions at Winston Salem State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, along with at least half a dozen other schools and institutions. I've been featured on other artists' records, and received a grant to release an album of my own songs. I regularly perform in a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

I love to teach, and over the years I have taught hundreds, maybe even thousands of lessons. Having learned something from each and every one
of my students, I am now at a point where I excel at honing in on the individual interests and learning styles of whoever comes to me for help. There are many ways to learn guitar. The best one is the one that engages and inspires you the most. That said, there are also music fundamentals that we all need to know. My joy as a teacher lies in finding a way for you to master the fundamentals while at the same time following your personal bliss and intuition. We plot the course together, combining your curiosity and enthusiasm with my years of experience.

I also love working with kids. While they are having fun jamming, I discretely provide them with the technique and musicianship they'll need to excel in any musical environment, whether it's conservatory study or playing in a great band.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your enthusiasm is the key to your success, so my lessons are tailored to the interests and abilities of each student. That said, my classical background and dedication to effective teaching inform everything I do.

All of my students learn Music Fundamentals:
-Technique (habits of movement)
-Theory (how music works)
-Aural skills (hearing pitches, chords and rhythms clearly)

Many of my students use books. There are hundreds of great books these days, and I will work with students from any book they choose. Listed here are the books I regularly use. They all deliver great results:

-Aaron Shearer "Leaning The Classic Guitar"
-Will Schmidt and Greg Koch "The Hal Leonard Method"
-Joe Pecoraro "Read This First"
-David Oaks "Music Reading For Guitar"
-William Leavitt "A Modern Method For Guitar"
-Mateo Carcassi "Melodic and Progressive Studies, Opus 60"
-Leo Brouwer "Simple Studies"

Many of my students prefer to work without a book, and that is a great option too. These students learn scales, chords and theory and develop a repertoire of songs. I will show you how to play any song you'd like to learn. You can also work on writing your own songs or compositions, or improvising in any context, be it jazz, blues, Indian raga or flamenco.

Singing is also encouraged!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: music stands, extensive library of all kinds of music, great sound system and ability to stream any song, several guitars, recording equipment, footstools, keyboard and percussion instruments.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I'll bring my guitar and books, accessories as needed.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in versatility. I regularly play gigs doing classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and world music. All of these genres have a place in my heart, and I've devoted years to learning to play and teach them well.

I am equally polyamorous when it comes to the various things musicians do. I love to sing pop songs, dissect jazz lines, delve into expressive groupings with classical pieces, drill scales and arpeggios, you name it. Reading, improvising, composing and notating, transcribing and playing by ear, memorization, classical technique, blues technique, bluegrass technique, theoretical analysis... hit me up for any of that, or whatever else interests you.

My love of singing began in my freshman year of high school, when I joined the choir. It was a life-changing experience, and inspired me to make music my career. I immediately began taking private voice lessons, and became a voice teacher myself by 2005. While in college, I was presented with many opportunities to learn and grow, both as a musician and as a teacher. I sang in several different collegiate choirs, and was nominated to be in the all-collegiate choir in 2007. I also passed yearly auditions to sing in Voices Only, Lindenwood's most advanced vocal group. During my junior and senior years at Lindenwood, I worked as the assistant director of Voices Only. This was a wonderful opportunity, and I learned so much while leading warm-ups every day, running sectionals on a weekly basis, directing the group during rehearsals and even during performances when the director was away. I currently sing in the Saint Louis Harmony Chorus, one of the top 25 women's barbershop choruses in the

About Angela
Hi! My name is Angela, and I teach private piano, voice, and theory lessons. I love teaching, and have taught many ages (3 to 93) and ability levels (novice to advanced). I am a dependable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic teacher. I offer lessons for 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly sessions in my home studio. I do not offer bi-weekly lessons or lessons in the student's home.

My home is a split-level, with my private living area above and my music studio below. There is a waiting area just outside the music studio, as well as a half-bath specifically designated for students and parents. The studio itself contains a piano and organ, my personal music library, and additional seating for parents. There is a full-length mirror for vocal students to watch their performance skills grow, and a gumball machine for when younger students have an exce
ptionally good lesson.

Making music is a skill which can bring lifelong joy to the musician as well as everyone around them. While I can easily ensure that my students enjoy music-making while they are taking lessons, my ultimate goal is that students continue to want to make music throughout their entire life, even after they stop taking lessons. I firmly believe that my job as a teacher is to train my students to be independent and self-sufficient musicians. Many teachers teach by rote, playing a passage to a student and then having the student play it back. Though this method is helpful in some situations, students who are taught in this manner often find that they are only able to play the songs taught to them in lessons, and that to learn a new song they must have a teacher by their side showing them how the song goes. In my lessons, however, students are taught to learn their own music through sight-reading, ear-training, music theory, and listening to and critiquing their own playing. Over time, this allows the student more and more freedom to make music without a teacher.

I am adding a review to override my original 4 star review to a 5 star review. My husband and I have been voice and piano students of Angela for well over a year now and she makes learning music interesting, fun, and challenging. It's intimidating to learn these skills (especially singing) as an adult but she is such a good teacher that we continue to look forward to our lessons and really enjoy learning these skills. She is encouraging and an excellent coach.

My daughter has been going to Angela for 4 years now. She started at 4 years of age, and is now 8 years old. My daughter started with voice lessons, and has since also picked up piano lessons. Now my younger daughter (5 years old) also began taking piano lessons with Angela. I can't imagine another music teacher for my girls. Angela is wonderful. She is professional and every moment of music lessons is complete quality time. I highly recommend Angela as a music teacher for anyone of any ability level!

I emphasize a vocal technique rooted in the classical tradition, because it provides an excellent foundation for any style the student is interested in singing.

I have had significant formal musical training, as well as years of experience working as a singer and teacher. I have performed and taught in a variety of styles, including opera, classical, pop, folk, and musical theater.

Learning to use proper breath support, resonance, and clarity of tone are all important aspects of singing, regardless of the style being sung. I typically use individually tailored vocal exercises to teach technical details at the beginning of the lesson. We also work on specific repertoire choices aimed at improving those newfound technical skills.

About Ana
Hey there! The first thing I want to tell you about studying with me is that my highest priority is making it fun. I’ve found that cultivating the student’s genuine interest and enjoyment of the music learning process is the biggest contributor to progress.

In the first lesson, communication is very important to me. I want to find out what you love about music, so that we can build skills which directly contribute to your musical passions. My approach with a new student involves discussing what they are hoping to get out of taking lessons. Together, we come up with a series of goals that we will work towards achieving during our sessions. I believe in tailoring the lesson to each individual student- there is no one size fits all method to learning!

I welcome students of all skill levels and ages, including complete beginners!

-Range (how high and low a vocalist can sing)

-Power (how impactful a vocalist can sound while maintaining healthy and sustainable technique)

-Stamina (how long a vocalist can sing without tiring or fatiguing AND how long a vocalist can hold an individual note/phrase without taking a breath)

-Freedom (removing detrimental tension and strain from the voice and body)

-Artistry (a vocalist's ability to effectively and authentically sing in any genre)

2. Victoria uses a professional recording studio to enhance/monitor student progress and gives students fully mastered/mixed recordings of the songs they work on in lessons.

This vibrant young lady was just simply a blessing: knowledgeable, dynamic and simply a pleasure to be around and in-take information from. My child was simply taken by her and was, as it seemed and looked to me, craving every following visit from her. She was able to commence, see through and complete the entire task I set in front of her-for my child to be ready for the next stage in her education. My son is going to be in need of similar educational assistance soon-I have already discussed his lessons with Polina and will definitely call upon her once the concrete dates arise!

I've been a committed and passionate teacher of voice for 3 years now. My teaching curriculum is based on proper, healthy vocal technique, no matter the style of singing you wish to focus on. I believe that each student has the right dictate what they want to learn and what type of music they want to explore. Each student has different needs and desires they wish to achieve. I encourage my students to sing in the genre of their preference, but I teach them classical technique to help them understand the voice and preserve their talent for the long run. With the proper breath support, resonance, and placement my students see improvement in their sound and ability within a month!

About Abigail
I am not only a professional singer and actress, but I'm also a music teacher in my local school district for elementary and high school. I am a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Syracuse University where I earned my Bachelor of Music Performance in Voice and a Minor in Drama.

I work as a freelance soprano in the area, ranging from classical recitals, wedding gigs, musicals, and studio recording. I've participated with several choirs ranging in style and purpose, including contemporary acapella groups, virtual choirs, classical chamber choirs, and baroque ensembles. I've also participated and been a winner of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing, a international choral competition.

As a singer I've always made it my personal goal to be able to sing as many genres as possible, with quality and believability. I've achieved some of this
goal by being on several songs, EPs, and albums as a background singer. My vocal abilities and understandings range from opera to commercial music, and I love to teach those genres and everything in between.

My personal passions are musical theatre and contemporary art songs and song cycles. However, I believe that all singers can benefit from learning classical technique and applying those skills to whatever genre they see fit.
