I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style. I am currently preparing to complete my certificat

*** Lesson Details ***
You will set the pace for your lesson. I want you to enjoy your time in music, so your lessons will be completely customized. We will develop a goal plan for you so that our time together is interesting, fun, and we make progress! In 3-6 months, you will have a stable technical program and have started a portfolio of music for performances, no matter what level you are. My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. My studio includes a 88-key keyboard, technology setup with an iMac, microphone and stand, a mirror for posture and musical instruments. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. At the intermediate level, students advance to the Rubank Method (Book II), Suzuki Book II and III and beginning etudes and scales and at the advanced levels I work on tone, technique, standard repertoire and college requirements.

He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

I am a professional flautist and have taught flute for more than 20 years to students of all age groups. Throughout my years teaching I have also been a part of a multitude of orchestras and chamber groups, held solo concerts, and done recordings for American composers.

During this time I have developed teaching methods and lesson plans starting with embrasure and breathing techniques and leading to strong memorization techniques through scales and arpeggios. I have also prepared students for solo and chamber music recitals, multiple who have gone to national and international level competitions.

I encourage my students to play music of all periods including classical as well as contemporary while keeping the environment of my lessons very friendly and fun.

I am an active, professional flutist, having earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in flute performance. For the last 20 years I have been very involved in the music community throughout the world having worked with a multitude of orchestras and chamber groups, done recordings, and held solo concerts in Europe, Africa, and the United States. This has enriched my teaching since with my strong background I have a better understanding of the necessary techniques and skills when sharing them with my students.

I teach students of all ages from beginner to advanced. With years of experience I have developed the ability to adjust my lessons for students of different levels and create a learning environment that is fun yet challenging and full of growth. Having played a variety of genres I encourage my students to choose pieces that s
peak to them while also working on developing their techniques through shorter exercises. My goal is to help my students achieve their goals and surprise themselves going way beyond, because I truly believe there is no limit. With practice, determination, and inspiring lessons my students can reach heights they would never have imagined before.

Teaching Methods:
For beginners I usually work with the Rubank methods book as well as songs that students love to play. I often use flashcards to facilitate with site-reading and slowly introduce all the musical symbols. I adapt different techniques to meet the needs of each student. For intermediate and advanced students I prefer using scales, etudes (exercises), sonatas, concertos and solo pieces of their preference. I especially enjoy playing duets with my students, one of their favorite ways of practicing, as it combines our talents in order to create something beautiful. Through regular practice and mentorship I teach my students to become independent and confident performers as they perform solo, as part of a band, or in competitions. There is no greater joy than being able to teach my students and help them better perform and understand the music they are sharing with others. My goal has always been to be a facilitator of my students' journeys to success and to see them fall in love with the flute just like I did at a very young age.

Tools:
During my lessons I often use a tuner and metronome to help students play on tune and keep the tempo if needed. Additionally, I occasionally use a recording device so students can become more aware of their sound and can learn to self-correct. It is also a great way to hear improvement over time.

Klodina was an extremely thorough teacher, who allowed the student some flexibility in choosing songs and exercises to improve student enjoyment. She also encouraged hard work at home so that lessons could demonstrate progress in my flute playing. There was a technical focus (scales, transitions, arpeggios) to make sure that I could go to the sheet music and play it with ease. Klodina was always a friendly, kind, passionate teacher, and I would recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their musical ability.

I am a music teacher and musician in the Los Angeles area. I was born in Taipei, Taiwan. I started my music education at the age of three; it started with clapping, rolling around on the floor, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. I was fascinated by the magic that music possesses; as Rimsky-K
orsakov unfold a tale of an enchanted land, with camel-riding merchants, bazaar, and princesses, without uttering a single word. I went on to learn a few instruments: xylophone, three different kinds of recorders, and then all this eventually led to flute.

I started studying flute at the age of 8, and it has been a delightful journey. In high school, I have participated in marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, and symphonic orchestra. I was also part of two prestigious local youth orchestra, the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Claremont Young Musician Orchestra.

I obtained my Bachelor of Music (Flute Performance) degree from University of California, Santa Barbara. I grew immensely as a musician during my time in Santa Barbara, I studied under Jill Felber, and I was able to expand my repetoire and gain considerable experience. I even played at the local farmers market as a street performer during the weekends. After graduation , I traveled to my home country Taiwan to study another great musician - Anders Norell, the principal flutist/flautist of the Taiwan Philharmonic. It was another great opportunity as I was able to garner teaching experiences, as well as attending master classes of great flutist/flautist such as Emmanuel Pahud.

As a music teacher, I encourage and inspire. I am foremost a music lover, then flutist and flute teacher. I aspire to spread the abundance of joy and beauty that music has bring into my life. As the great conductor and cellist Pablo Casals puts it: "Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart". She took everything at a slow an steady pace and gave helpful suggestions She knew the piece by Debussy that I wanted to learn, and she had it right in front of her, so she could make very helpful comments. Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alongside a song you
love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Maybe you want to sound like [insert piano player here]. Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Music lasts a lifetime. I know that’s a terrible cliché, but it’s true, and few other skills can claim that. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it, and like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer you do it, the faster you get… or something like that. There’s a legitimate analogy in there somewhere.

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

I am a professional saxophonist and recording artist with 14 years of playing experience. I studied Jazz Saxophone at the Manhattan School of Music and William Paterson University, where I graduated with a Bachelors degree. I am currently pursuing my Masters Degree in Music Education at Towson University. I have performed original music with my jazz group for the last 5 year across New York, New Jersey, Maryland and D.C. I have had the good fortune of being able to study with some of the worlds greatest jazz musicians including Mulgrew Miller, Christian McBride, Rich Perry, Chris Potter, Seamus Blake and Donny McCaslin.

I teach flute lessons in the heart of Mount Vernon, just a few blocks away from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. With four years of teaching experience and a wealth of creative knowledge gained from my time at Oberlin College and Conservatory, my teaching caters to every age and ability. In addition to studying at Oberlin (and now Peabody) I grew up in a very musical household, and have two younger siblings.
I love working with all types of students, whether they’re preparing for college auditions, just beginning the flute, or only looking to play for fun, and I also have experience with students with special needs. Flutist Amanda Dame is a versatile performer active as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including first-place in the Best Mozart Performance category of the global Great Composer Competition Series, as well as first place awards in the 2014 Central Ohio Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the 2013 Rochester Flute Association Emerging Artist Competition, the 2012 Donald E. Webster Scholarship Competition, and the 2012 Stefan Scholarship Competition. Last year, Dame was invited to participate in the Third International Maxence Larrieu Flute Competition, taking place in Nice, France, and was one of only three flutists invited from the United States.
As an avid orchestral musician, Dame is currently a substitute flutist with the Canton and Firelands Symphonies. During her studi
es at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, she was a rotating principal of the Oberlin Orchestra, and performed in the orchestra at Chicago Symphony Center as a part of their 150th-Anniversary tour. At Oberlin, Dame appeared frequently as an ensemble-member for faculty concerto recordings. She has appeared in the Schikele Bassoon Concerto and the Augusta Reed Thomas Bassoon Concerto released on the Oberlin and Naxos labels on the album Full Moon in the City. She has also appeared in recordings of the Carter Flute Concerto and the Trigos Guitar Concerto No. 1 (forthcoming releases). In addition to her orchestral opportunities at Oberlin, Dame has attended the Pierre Monteux School and Festival, the Miami Summer Music Festival, and the Bach Institute at Emmanuel Music. She also has a love for chamber music, and performs regularly with her Oberlin-based group, the Amaryllis Trio, consisting of flute, cello and piano.

Dame has recently graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she received a Bachelor of Music in flute performance and a Bachelor of Arts in biology as a part of the college’s double-degree program. She has recently begun a Master of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory.

Amanda is an outstanding teacher. She inspires and challenges me to play pieces I did not think I could play. She is able to take difficult passages and break them down step my step so I can learn how to play them properly. I am sure I would not be playing as I am now, if it weren’t for Amanda’s skilled teaching. She is also friendly, makes the lessons interesting and fun and is very professional.
