I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and the Music Teachers National Association (Music Teachers Association of Charles County). As a teacher, I'm very student oriented. We move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. I do encourage learning to read music, but I use multiple ways of teaching to reach my students. Everyone learns in a different way. My primary job is to see you achieve your goals in relation to your instrument. I also encourage that you take every opportunity to perform. There are many groups in the area that allow for different ages and styles of music
. I can help you understand what is going on behind the music and hopefully see what the composer was hoping to convey, if that is something you want to know. When I was a student I always wanted to know "why?". As a teacher, you will know why if I do.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to keep my lesson area as stress free as possible. It's OK to make mistakes in my studio. I would like you to bring a notebook to lessons as well as your music and instrument. I write as much as I can down because if you were like I was during lessons, I would forget everything I was supposed to be watching for after 3 days. Like I said above, we move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. Questions are a good thing. It shows interest. But sometimes you just have to stop asking questions and just take the leap of faith.
We start with note reading as well as proper form and the parts of the instrument. We also deal with general care. I will tune your instrument every time you come in for lessons until you learn how to tune it yourself. We will review the day before, I will check on what work you've done and then move onto the next song/ technique etc. After we learn how to pluck the first 8 notes, we start with scales and bowing.

After that we move through the "usual" routine. Scale, etude, song(s) or school test songs, audition requirements etc.

I try to keep the same routine because for some students it's easier for them to focus if they know the lesson is going to move in a familiar way. It's reassuring. After we become proficient in the basics, we move into whatever genre you would like to play, within reason. If you are in the school orchestra we will work towards you getting an A.

I would say I'm more laid back when you are not preparing for an audition. Auditions require a lot of work and I want you to do as close to perfect as possible. I become fairly demanding during that time.

In about 6 months, you can play almost any tune you can hear on the radio. Explaining where you could be gets fairly technical and I might as well be talking like Charlie Brown's teacher.

I am familiar with Paul Rolland's work, Valerie Bobbett Gardner's Violin Virtuosity, as well as Guillespie's. I was brought up Suzuki but haven't been trained in Suzuki. I have taken classes on how to teach to a variety of students so I could hold a teaching license in the state. I do participate with (Canadian) The Royal Conservatory of Music Music Development. This is active in the US also.

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

Had a wonderful time with my teacher she restrung my violin and I got a trade in for an adult si and adult size because I had purchased one for ciao but I got it at music store where she works and they gave me another one with the trade-in and I only had to pay $50 I had a nice time with Miss Hines I even was so excited to go into my lessons I get it two hours earlier and she excepted me so that was good she had time to string the restring the Valium and not show me a lot of things that I needed to do and I’ve also purchased the first book so I’m I’m really excited

Melody is a wonderful piano teacher. She taught my daughter for 2 months before she moved. My daughter learned several pieces of music which she performed at the recital. It was her first recital and she was nervous but Melody encouraged her and gave her the confidence to perform!

I highly recommend Miss Melody as a piano and voice teacher for young children. She is very well respected. Her passion in teaching music is shown through her enthusiasm and patient approach. She has developed a program and teaching techniques that are always age and skill level appropriate. She encourages her students throughout the lesson, providing just the right amount of urging to keep trying and not give up. Her goal is to let the student enjoy and appreciate the art of playing and singing. My daughter has taken both the piano and voice lessons for 2 years and our family has joined 3 music recitals, all professionally done and very well prepared. I enrolled my 8 year old grand daughter and 10 year old grandson for piano and singing during their family visit with us, which lasted two weeks. Each of them had eight lessons in total and for that span of time they have learned how to read notes and count patiently. They also learned to play other instruments such as maracas, chimes, etc. It was so nice of Ms Melody to be able to conduct a studio mini recital just for the two of them. It is really amazing how my grandkids has learned so much from her. When I found out she is moving, I knew it will be hard to find somebody like her who is not just a very good teacher, but you can tell that she loves the kids and teaching comes very easy for her. Thank you Ms Melody for your good heart. As other reviewer said she will be missed, surely she will. I remember my grand daughter’s exact words when we left after their last lesson, ”Ms Melody is really very nice grandma. I like her so much!”

As a voice teacher and voice coach, I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me, singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz, and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section leader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportun
ity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington, DC area and have sung opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member, the director of a recital series, a cantor, and I'm writing monologues and small plays to be performed. I was working as a co-executive producer/casting director for a show that is on Amazon Prime as well. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

For beginning piano: I will teach you to learn how the piano is set up, teaching you to read sheet music, beginning theory and to play songs. Something beyond nursery rhymes.

I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge. I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a few bands (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock). My undergraduate studies we
re completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

Ms. Valyncia was an amazing coach. She was very patient , very honest and very professional. She pushed me beyond my comfort zone and I was able to improve my breathing, improve my range and put some personality into my performance. That was a long time ago but I plan on booking her again as my coach. I highly recommend her ! You will definitely become a better singer / performer when working with her , as long as you put the work in.

Outside of teaching percussion and musical performances I have worked in special education for over 15 years.

My life of music started knee high at the age of 4 playing drums and piano. At the age of 15 I gave my first musical performance, from that stage on I knew my talent had found a home.

In the 11th grade I toured with a local funk group in Washington DC through 26 cities learning music and the life of travel at an early age. During my last high school and college years I performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and with local rap artist.

Recording credits and highlights include work with Def Jam artist Steady Eddy, recording go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock, and recordings with Little Benny and the Masters.

My other musical passion is teaching. Throughout my col
lege years and beyond I served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. As part of the Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine I served as a instructional leader in music and performance mentor for the team. I taught part time as a percussion instructor at Milford Mill High School giving individual lessons for over 10 years.

Musical inspiration is an important element to the refinement of my craft. A few personal musical influences are Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Neil Peart (Rush), Dennis Chambers, (Santana), George Gray (Roberta Flack), Ricky Wellman (Miles Davis), Quinton Mack-Davis (Rare Essence) and Michael Bland (Prince).

Within the first three months of lessons student will gain a strong foundation of sight reading and basic drum techniques in both rudiment studies and playing the drum set. My style of teaching music consist of breaking each skill down into chunks and allowing students to learn using their individual learning styles. Our son has never played in a marching band before but is interested in playing in the marching band when he attends college in July so we were specifically looking for an instructor who had marching band experience to teach our son since he's never participated in the marching band in high school. We saw Mr. Stewart's profile and decided to have him work with our son. That was the BEST decision that we could have ever made. We have been nothing but impressed with Mr. Stewart. He definitely has the gift of teaching and he is very patient, knowledgeable, and he challenges our son to get better by giving him homework after each session. Our son absolutely LOVES Mr. Stewart and he is always excited for each lesson and to practice what Mr. Stewart has taught him. Our son went from not playing in the marching band at all in high school to making his college band and receiving a scholarship all thanks to Mr. Stewart. We are very grateful for his outstanding teaching and we would definitely recommend Mr. Stewart 100%.

I offer all my insight and expertise to my students. That is why I think it is important to understand and possibly workout and thus finally accept what is being asked to build a successful working relationship.

I absolutely understand, appreciate and sympathize even that we are all coming from somewhere and with that said please keep in mind:

Learn to not judge yourself while you are sorting out your technique. Be completely open to reworking every aspect if necessary without feeling defeated. Reserve judgment and do not assume something is not for you regarding technique if you have not fully mastered it yet in application and comprehension.

That type of opinion is reserved for professionals who have both mastered and understand the technique only. Until then it is important to accept that you need to keep working and stay humble and positive.

***Your emotional state of mind and attitude absolutely matters. Do not underestimate the influence of your mind on your body. We are not aiming for perfectionism, we are aiming for personal excellence!***
Part of that is being absolutely willing to try the way I am asking and trusting it is only for your benefit and giving yourself the room necessary to work this way. You don’t have to come here perfect by any means, please don’t think this. You just have to be in reasonable enough shape to work productively.

Perfectionism leads to disappointment and limited thinking that undermines progress. You must be open, resourceful, adventurous and experimental in your singing. Perfectionism will fail you in this regard. I am a recovering perfectionist so I know:)

You cannot offer your most excellent work if you are resistant, fearful or emotionally (exhausted) nor prepared for working honestly due to past discouragement or carrying unrealistic expectations that typically stem from not being willing to invest the time, effort, or financial means in yourself. No one can help you if these factors are put between us and things always surface if they haven’t yet. Be prepared. Know that we are all facing the same issues more or less in this journey.

That is why I suggest making amends with any and all of these factors before working with me because they will influence the outcome of our work.

Some I am sure, will immediately disagree with what I am saying and decide that this is not what they need or in actuality really want to give (themselves truly), and find another coach who agrees with what they are willing to do, even if that severely limits their growth.

This is absolutely my professional opinion and I believe it is true for everyone. I know what I am saying can sound overwhelming, but it is not. Remove the ego from the equation. It is actually realistic and practical. I am telling you that you are absolutely in control of your outcome.

My hope is that students will come to terms with the reality of what is necessary to finding success in their singing first and worry about whatever is next last and not attempt to displace their end of the deal.

Start with very small, manageable steps and say yes to what you are saying no to or battling in your mind. That is actually more exhausting than the work itself and needs to be left at the door when we work.

Other professionals might agree with you or say differently about what I have expressed to save your business. Finding others who agree doesn’t make it true. Confronting things honestly is a choice that the teacher must make as well as the student.

I say this because it is the truth and it is a disservice to you as a singer and the necessary foundation to the relationship to go into it any other way.
It is already difficult enough to find direction when we are being lead without honesty and it must begin with us.

This is exactly what every student needs to realize because this is a tremendous part of what is holding them back. If you have understood what I am saying, it is actually a very empowering message.

It might even be all that you needed to hear to find a real path to success. :)

If you acknowledge what I stated above and are willing to commit to the work, I can assure you that I promise to do my part and help you move toward success in your lessons.

If you fully follow my guidance in your mind and heart, you will eventually find your way. I am open to what a student says they initially need, but that said I tend to show my students the light eventually on whether something is truly helping or hurting. I have extremely good instincts on exactly what a person is ready to take on, but it’s typically a bit more than what they might want to do. That is because the mind is often behind the body. I have to be several steps ahead to keep the work progressive.

I always tell my students that I will only teach you what you need, not what you want, expect to learn or already know. You should be interested in this too. Please allow me to do this. I focus on fixing the weakness that we prefer to avoid while continuing to incorporate a singer’s strengths that are already present.

I understand that what I am saying is challenging for most students because it is so often the glaringly obvious aspects of our technique that we have been avoiding and battling before we walked through the door.

Know that I have faith in you and I want you to find faith in yourself because that is more empowering and valuable than millions of people believing in you. You don’t need that, you need belief in self only.

Believing in yourself with the mindset as worthy to go forward is what will help you get through the difficulties and challenges with confidence and assurance. Problems that will arise and cannot be avoided.

You will see that you will start to be led in a much different direction just by changing your thinking.

If anything I said makes you feel nervous, overwhelmed or uncomfortable because it does not align with what you were expecting, regardless of being a beginner or a professional then I say just confront it, own it for what it is and accept it because you are now ready to work at an elevated capacity.

Christine’s extensive experience and knowledge as a professional adult contemporary vocal artist includes a highly in-depth working understanding of a range of various styles and specialties in vocal intonation that is truly hard to match by other professionals in the field.

This along with her continuous education (over twenty years) and dedication to the authentic Italian traditions of bel canto has allowed for her to develop an approach that can extended into all legitimate styles of singing. Her personal approach to the voice is beyond comparison, and can only be described as world class.

She has a phenomenal ear and can make rapid and highly accurate assessments of technical issues in a very brief sitting. Christine is exceptional at explaining vocal pedagogy and directing students on how to make corrections for themselves.

Christine is a dramatic coloratura soprano and is very confident and experienced with large instruments (that are more difficult to train for various reasons and require more specialized training). Having an extremely rare and large voice herself has given her invaluable insight toward fully understanding all other voice types and the discipline necessary to achieve efficient technique.

Many teachers can be limited in their view and teach "their technique" as opposed to helping the student develop their own technique and what works best for them. Christine has a great talent for figuring out what a students needs to do in their approach in order to achieve the results and keep the lessons progressive.

Developing proficient technique in a complete and effective way leads toward discovering the full capacity and beauty of our instrument without compromise. We need to find our voice to find ourselves as artist.

Her methods in vocal intonation translate directly and indirectly into all styles of legitimate singing, which she coaches many varying styles and will direct student toward appropriate repertoire. Students will learn the full potential of their instrument under her guidance. It is her belief that technique should always lead toward one sounding natural, no matter the style and that one fully learns their instrument’s capability to access endless artistic choices as a performer.

Christine offers very traditional based vocal lessons with a focus on improving technique through practical exercises and song repertoire designed for each student's unique vocal needs. She will offer necessary guidance and adjustments to ensure the student's continuous development.

Her goal is for her vocal students to discover their authentic voice and to find freedom in their technique and most importantly their expression as artists.

What you can expect to learn:

Vocal pedagogy and how the voice functions properly; how to effectively think about your voice to get the body to cooperate (aurally, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.);

Integrating the body to fully support the voice Rebounding the body to continue to move the air efficiently. These are the basics of support, but often times very apparently neglected because most trained singers/teachers from even the highest institutions do not understand how it works or do it effectively themselves. It is sadly becoming a lost art. This is the most advanced concept of singing and yet is absolutely necessary to master in order to access genuine support. Christine clearly demonstrates and explains how this concept functions and her refinement of it is by far not common knowledge.

Other important concepts covered:
Learning to create a prepared position internally in order to access the head. Head voice is found from preparing a space aiming for the center of the top of the head, releasing various internal muscles and applying the correct amount of compressed air that fits pressure wise and can be elongated to allow actual resonance and depth from the other two supporting resonators such as forward and connected into the Mask which I define separate from head voice but work together and then adding chest in agreement with these resonators. This as well as all working in alliance with the body/support and directing the air, legitimate dynamics directed from the body and compressed air, anchoring the body to maintain the larynx low, but not pressed upon, but one that is flexible, and this is relative to the singer’s current technique;

Various placement techniques, air that can rebound using breath direction and not from using the larynx inappropriately, centering the voice/cut internally by aligning the horizontal (mask) and vertical planes (chest, back of head, top of head and spine) support and placement that function together, elongating the air/suspending the body, developing a mixed middle sound that passes easily into low and high registers and broadens range why staying connected to head voice is the goal to achieve this and create power if expression calls for it and how to do this successfully/legitimately; articulation free from the jaw and using tongue and other articulators as well as using breath direction to assist, posture that is conducive for support and keeps the body open and functional; opposed to over using or relying on just your head to fix posture that typically causes the head to overly hyperextends which then cuts off potential to access the best quality resonating pathways/body alignment to achieve support. Learning the correct way to cycle through your breathing process.

Various artistic and performance techniques, musical interpretation appropriate to context, time period and style, aligning the voice and body/acting to come across accurately in our portrayals and the process behind this, memorization techniques, execution of timing for expressive reasons and ways to think about timing that doesn’t conflict with the natural structure of a song, but allows for flexibility in phrasing, phrasal development and song development.

Education and continuation of voice:

She received her music education in classical vocal performance from George Mason University and has vigiourously continued her studies in opera with Mrs. Fabiana Bravo, who studied with Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto and has had a fabulous career singing at the Met. She has learned the Italian bel canto traditions as well as the Russian approach to the style. Christine specializes in Italian for classical rep.

General styles I coach:
Opera (bel canto and verismo) classical, sacred, hymnal, traditional, jazz, r&b, folk, and other variations of these popular styles.

Christine also has an international recording career as an adult contemporary artist.

Voice lessons begin at age 16-48.

What do I expect from students who are seriously applying:

Those who are very hard working and prepared to work on what they NEED, not what they want. Those that are motivated, passionate, dedicated, responsible, considerate, humble and serious about lessons and greatly improving as musicians should apply only regardless of aspirations as a hobby or professionally.

The most important thing necessary to finding real progress I have found is if a student is fully prepared to work HONESTLY. We must always strive to work honestly with our technique. Issues cannot be corrected when we chose to continue to avoid them.

I strongly believe that music is a discipline and this is the manner in which it will be approached during lessons. This is a teacher-STUDENT effort. Taking responsibility for your part is a must. This includes trying to the best of your abilities to put my advice and guidance into practice away from lessons is necessary to your improvement.

I am looking for potential long-term students who are willing and ready to work hard in a practical and realistic manner, regardless of experience, learning needs or proficiency. It will not work long term if a student is not making the time or effort commitment to apply the work from our lessons at home.

Singing is a long-term sustained process to develop that can absolutely not be rushed and I want students who understand this. I have very limited availability and I am only seeking serious students who have a positive, professional attitude and will value me as a teacher. You need not know anything about voice, just have a good work ethic and attitude :)

Christine is a Godsend! Prior to working with her, I studied classical voice and opera with several instructors. Christine is by far the best teacher and wish I had met her sooner!

As an accomplished singer herself, she is able to identify challenging areas and help improve technique. I’m now attempting pieces with confidence that I never would have attempted previously. And, I find the sessions very relaxing and enjoyable. She inspired me to push myself further and feel like I’m getting great results! Well worth the investment.

I have been teaching the piano since 2010 after graduating from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. My goal as a teacher is to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in their own musical journey, whether they pursue the piano for the rest of their lives, switch to other instruments, or decide to pursue other interests.

I started studying the piano when I was four and began participating in piano competitions in the 5th grade. When I was in 8th grade, I won first place in a concerto competition and was able perform my piece before a live audience, while accompanied by an orchestra. That opportunity helped me realize that I love sharing music with others, be they students, fellow musicians, or members of an audience. Throughout the years, I have pursued this love by playing the p
iano for/with friends and family, singing in choirs, and playing the violin in orchestras and ensembles. While attending the University of Maryland, I was a member of the Gamer Symphony Orchestra, where I sung with the choir and led the soprano and alto sections in rehearsal.
