When I first begin teaching a student, I tell them that everyone has the ability to sing well no matter his or her experience. I also tell them that there are four things that a good singer must have: breathe control (air is your fuel, and must be used efficiently and effectively to give you the best sound), posture (in order to have access to your air and prevent vocal damage you must practice good posture habits), diction (how you pronounce words when singing can impede or improve vocal tone, as well as help or hinder the audience in understanding the lyrics) and finally and most importantly, passion. Passion is how emotionally connected you are to music and is what really allows the singer to connect with his or her audience.

One of the funniest memories I have of my first choir experience was learning how to hum in a choir. I thought it was a little ridiculous as a 4th grader because I thought I already knew how to hum, since I was doing it all the time. However, your casual humming while you work a-la Snow White (for those of us who prefer it over whistling) is in fact, completely different from humming as an actual singer. See, my beloved chorus teacher had us open our mouths as wide as we could, and then clos …

Have you been wondering how to sing in tune? Want to be able to carry a song confidently with others, sing in a choir, or maybe even sing onstage someday? Let us begin with the idea that it is natural to sing in tune. That’s right, singing in tune is something our bodies know how to do. And the vast majority of us humans have a natural ability to sing in tune. What?? You might ask. Yes. In fact, less than 2 percent of the global population exhibits true amusia. But, there's one thing tha …

Want to impress your friends or family -- or perhaps your future husband or wife -- with a wedding performance? Here are some ideas for songs to sing at a wedding from Hayward, CA teacher Molly R... While some have been asked to sing a specific song, others need some suggestions on what to sing. Here are five songs to sin …
