Students studying voice with me can expect to gain a thorough understanding of their voice on both an anatomical and a functional level. My method is built upon the vocal training I received as an actor, and on the decade plus of experience I've had since as a singer, musician, music director and actor. It's important for every singer to understand what is really happening with their body when they sing, but that knowledge is only useful if a student is taught how to apply that knowledge in a simple, repeatable way. Each voice is different, just like each body is different, but through a combination of physical and mental vocal exercises, each of my students will learn what proper vocal support means for them. The repertoire of material we then apply this knowledge to is up to the student. I'm happy to teach through whatever genre you're looking to improve in. I also have the ability to make instrumental tracks for my students to practice with, and to make both audio and video ...

About Ian
Hello! My name is Ian, and whether you're young, old, a novice or a veteran, I can't wait to work together to help you achieve your creative goals. I've been singing for as long as I can remember, and began playing the guitar when I was 11 years old. I studied music and theatre at Salem State University, where I earned a B.A. in music in 2004. For the last 15 years I've been working as a freelance musician, music director and composer in and around the greater Boston and Providence areas.

I love teaching, and I try to make my lessons fun, engaging and personally tailored to help each student meet their unique goals. I've worked with individuals of all ages, ability levels and walks of life, and I have extensive experience helping students with a wide variety of special needs, such as those with autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, physica
l disabilities, etc. I love teaching beginners, because it's such a pleasure to help someone navigate their way through what can be a very intimidating subject at first.

Great teacher and nice guy!

I started singing lessons as a complete beginner, although I am in my 30s. Ian was happy to teach me the basics and then we dove right in to something I was interested in learning to sing. He was easy to talk to and encouraging, but willing to point out what I could improve as well. I would recommend him to others.

Awesome teacher!!!

Took a couple singing lessons in the past with a different teacher and I didn't get very far. Ian has a great teaching style and I can already hear a difference in my singing just in the first few weeks of lessons. He is very encouraging, especially for a beginner like me. His constructive criticism is equally helpful. Highly recommended.

Fantastic, Genre Diverse Vocal Teacher

In addition to thoroughly addressing all of the issues that initially spurned my desire for vocal lessons, we also examined and exercised other critical areas that he brought to my attention, and laid a strong foundation for singing technique.

About Bethany
I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for
youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Malden studio: Dedicated studio with 88-key weighted keyboard, recording equipment, and large collection of sheet music. Parents can sit in on lessons or wait downstairs. Parking in driveway or on street. We have cats.

Bedford studio: Front room setup for lessons with upright piano and stereo. Laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons. Parking available in driveway and street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn from Bulent. I have no prior experience in music and decided to take voice coaching lessons so I can begin singing in my church. Bulent clearly has a vast knowledge of music and patiently taught me the fundamentals which I found very valuable for a beginner like me. I learned so much from the first lesson and was so motivated I immediately signed up for weekly sessions. Despite his many accomplishments and impressive music career, Bulent was down to earth, patient and friendly which made for a session where I felt more comfortable and more receptive to learn. I am very excited and optimistic to see how my voice improves over time!

I studied with Bulent for about eight months and only stopped because I moved across the country. This is the first formal voice training I have had. I was immediately impressed by Bulent’s deep knowledge and passion for music. My first class was quite unique, in that he spent a lot of time going over the anatomy of all the organs that are used when one is singing. I found that foundation very useful when working on different aspects of my voice. The classes consist of two parts — fundamental training and repertoire building. Bulent observes the student and gives instruction based on performance. He will also assign exercises for the student to do while at home; these are important because they are helping to train the relevant muscles. Bulent’s instructions are very detailed and personalized, and most importantly they come from a place of love; it is rare to see a teacher so in love with both the field of music as well as the people he encounters. This love provided an exceptional setting for being able to focus on learning the truths of music, without fear of judgement or ridicule. Not only did I improve my vocal abilities while training with Bulent, my awareness as a singer also grew tremendously. That awareness allows me to help myself improve while I practice on my own.

Solid knowledge from 18 years of playing guitar and singing, I Graduated From Berklee College Of music as one of the first African Scholars.

About Albino
Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he needed experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and Performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA, where he could expand his musical horizons
. Soon after, he was one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. In 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which is directed by Danilo Perez and the residency teachers, including Joe Lovano John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artist's original vision in jazz, and has helped Albino find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States of America today, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Moz-Jazz sound. He will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.

Albino's original composition “Mozambique Dance” was recorded by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee College of Music, for the 8th annual album released in 2011. He also recorded “Awusiwana,” his own composition, for the Berklee 2012 summer album. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. In 2012, he will graduate from Berklee College with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and Performance, and a minor in Acoustics and Electronics.

After teaching for over a decade, I promise you there is no such thing as not having a talent to sing. When people desperately want to sing and constantly do something about it, miracles happen. Some of my students have changed their lives through singing, and went a journey from being seemingly hopeless into gigging and performing musicians.
In the lessons, we work on types of breathing, posture, stage presence and performing techniques, and we are having lots and lots of fun!

About Inna
Hello, and thank you for your interest!

My name is Inna, I'm a jazz and world vocalist, pianist and composer.

I come from family of musicians, and I have started exploring music since the age of 5. In addition to my classical studies in Russia, I won the only full tuition scholarship to study in famous Berklee College of Music in the competition that took place during Berklee Asia Scholarship Tour in 2010.

In Berklee I was deeply influenced and moved by Eastern European and Middle Eastern music, which lead to experimentations in fusing those genres with modal jazz and then later rock.

I studied Vocal Performance, and Contemporary Writing and Production, and I have over a decade of experience in teaching, and performing, so I look forward to working with you to develop your voice, piano, and composing/arranging skills!

Want to learn classical voice technique? I teach a curriculum that focuses on healthy breathing, purity of vowels, and freedom of tone that is great for beginner and intermediate singers of all ages! I believe in the joy of music, and would love to help you explore your unique instrument. I can also teach the basics of music theory, sight reading, and piano skills.

About Rebekah
I am a current graduate student in vocal performance. I previously studied voice performance at Mannes College in New York. I love to perform, and was most recently seen as a soloist with Opera Maya in Mexico.

As a teacher I strive to help students produce their voices in a free and healthy manner. In addition to technique, I encourage students to explore musically and dramatically through their repertoire. Everyone has a unique sound and a unique interpretation that they bring to music. I help students tap into that in a safe and fun environment.

In addition to studying classical voice, I also studied piano for 8 years and music theory for 3 years. I try to incorporate theory and aural skills into all lessons, so that student become well-rounded musicians while building healthy vocal technique.
