About Frank

ABOUT MYSELF
I started late on the guitar in a family of musicians. I picked up the guitar when I was 18 years old when I found an old acoustic at my grandfather’s house. From then I was self taught listening to Punk Rock, New Wave, and learning from friends. My love for the instrument and music drove me to really apply myself to really learning how to play. I would sit and just be creative, writing my own songs and putting little back yard bands together with my cousin and friends. Then, it was time for college and had to make a decision on what to study. Music was my passion and I never rea
lly taken a lesson before. I prepared myself by studying with Stephan Ferrara-Grand in San Clemente,CA for a short time to audition into the music program. I passed! I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the San Diego State University School of Music and Dance in 1999, and I studied jazz guitar with international guitarist/violinist Art Johnson and theory with David Ward-Steinman. From the time I graduated, I have been playing professionally and recorded five releases of my own as well as made appearances on others and have toured the country several times playing my own original music. My bands have opened and/or toured with the likes of Dee Dee Ramone, Blink 182, Green Day, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Jimmy Eat World, Ten Foot Pole, Big Drill Car, and Leeland. I also play for Day 7 and Revival Christian Fellowship where I shared a stage with Greg Laurie, Franklin Graham, Raul Reis, and Jon Courson.

I have been teaching music for over 10 years. I love my lessons to be laid back, light, yet focused. The lessons are tailored for the students needs/levels. For the beginning student we start from the basics. for example, tuning, vocabulary on the parts of the guitar, to basic chord shapes and strum patterns. Almost from the beginning, I introduce music theory to the student. I believe it is important to the musician, because music is a language that is spoken through the instrument and also read by the musician. Not just piano or band instruments, but guitar too! Guitarist always seem to get left behind in this. I teach it hand in hand with the guitar and it comes naturally while learning. Some students want to learn songs and/or to write songs. This is what I have been doing for many years and enjoy it! As the student progresses, I love to pull the creativity out of the students. Music is also art and a passage for the individual to express him/herself. It is a joy to see and help a musician to mature on the instrument!

We purchased guitar lessons for our 9 year old nephew with a very short attention span. Frank has inspired interest and developed focus in him. He is learning and so proud of his progress. Frank is extremely friendly, talented and professional. Highly recommend him for either kids or adults.

Comfortable learning from Frank

Frank has a wonderful personality. I am so much at ease learning from Frank. His style of teaching tips and techniques has made it so much easier for learning rather than having a child playing away and not know the base of an instrument. His patience and understanding is amazing. He is very easy to communicate with and not forgetting how in tuned he is with his student that he picks up things that even I do not know I am doing wrong. Thanks for that. I know for sure I will not be changing to another music teacher.

Ian B.

La Mirada, CA

About Ian

I am a pianist. I am also a keyboardist, programmer, and music producer. But the title I probably most identify with is "composer." I realized early on that my own passion for performing was fueled by my hunger to actually CREATE music. So I set out to learn from the masters. I won competitions and scholarships in high school, then double-majored in piano and composition at the University of Kansas where I obtained my bachelor's degree before going on to record, write, and produce rock & electronic dance music.

I love being a CREATOR of music; and that love just extends quite naturally int
o the collaborative creative process we have come to know as "œteaching." There is no greater joy than creating music...except maybe seeing someone else I have trained and inspired create something of their own...on their own...without my help.

*** Lesson Details ***
My specialty is empowering students with the tools to become not only a pianist, but a...
-musician,
-songwriter,
-composer,
-producer,
-and more!

My students develop a holistic, artistic point of view of the world. They also gain self confidence and self-esteem as they learn to TEACH THEMSELVES more and more. I can help you or your child reach these goals in a way that will have you falling in love with the music and worrying less about the challenges of practice and discipline. Just like anything in life, playing an instrument requires a focused mind and hard work. But when you're having the time of your life, you do not even notice the distinction between work and play.

The way I teach focuses on each individual student's personality. I try to tailor lessons and assignments to each student, as well as introduce them to a variety of music styles. It all starts with your first lesson, where I will generate a "playlist" of songs and styles that each student and their family have already familiarized themselves with. Whatever style of music you listen to the most - whether it be Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Broadway, or even Electronic Dance Music (one of my personal favs!) - the songs on your playlist will reflect a very personal profile of aspirations and inspirations - your unique musical personality and culture. I will take that personality as a starting point and develop a lesson plan that will ultimately have you learning some of your favorite songs RIGHT AWAY!....

That's right, not in 3-6 months after hours of scales and practice. I believe that everything you need to learn is already INSIDE THE MUSIC. And so we'll start playing REAL MUSIC, RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING. Sound like fun?

Depending on each student's individual goals and speed of learning, I can also:
-expose you to new music and musical styles,
-give you the tools to learn ANY song by ear,
-show you how to read musical notation without it feeling like a foreign language
-help you write your first song or composition (of many!)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full sized (88 keys), touch sensitive digital piano with weighted keys. Computer workstation with lab software and DAW (Ableton and Reaper).

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to have an instrument. Preferably a piano or keyboard with at least 60 keys. I provide everything else. Curriculum and repertoire will be either purchased directly by student or invoiced as needed.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Pop, Rock, Modern, Electronic Dance Music (EDM)

Byron T.

Brea, CA

About Byron

Music and music teaching is my first love and passion in life. (Feel free to check out my video and music!) To be able to study and play the guitar for the last 11 years has been an immense blessing! I am a guitar teacher with a degree in music from Biola University, La Mirada. I have been teaching lessons privately almost 9 years now. I am trained in various styles of guitar music including classical, jazz, pop, rock, blues, and finger-style on both acoustic and electric guitars. My musical journey began in the 6th grade when my parents purchased a nylon string classical guitar for me. Throug
hout my high school and college years I participated in contemporary rock ensembles for corporate worship at my church and other churches. This included leading and singing as well. While enrolled at the Biola Conservatory of Music I played in the classical guitar ensemble for 5 semesters. My experience includes playing in jazz ensembles, doing solo guitar music at weddings and art galleries, playing in classical guitar quartets, and active composition and recording of my original work on the guitar. You can expect all of this experience and knowledge to come together in a musically fascinating and motivating way that will fill your life with the joys of being able to express yourself musically if you are willing to give the time and effort to do so. Also...Check out my video and music!

*** Lesson Details ***
My number one goal is to cultivate your desire and passion for musical expression by providing a friendly and inspiring environment in which to experience the joy and beauty of music! You can learn the songs you have always wanted to play and even learn to write your own music! My overall teaching philosophy includes three basic areas of knowledge which work together to form a well educated guitarist. The first area is technical knowledge. The student will be taught to physically utilize the instrument in an efficient and effective way in order to maximize learning progress and musical potential. The second area is in theoretical knowledge which includes reading both music notation and tablature (tablature is an alternative form of written guitar music that is very easy to read). This also includes understanding music theory as it applies to the guitar, and full knowledge of the musical possibilities on the guitar. The third area, my favorite area, is Practical knowledge which includes learning songs by other artists to expand the student'€™s understanding of how other musicians use the instrument (the students choose these songs based on what they like). You will also expand your practical knowledge by directly applying the theoretical knowledge that you have learned. This is done by composing your own music in a creative and original way. I am also a vocalist and am able to coach my students the basics of the voice and how to use the voice and guitar at the same time. As a teacher I strive for excellence in my students by teaching them all that they need to be a well educated guitarist. I will actively and joyfully peruse your interests by tailoring the curriculum to focus on the music that the you love and have a passion for.

I provide my own music curriculum that has been honed over time through my experience as a private teacher. The books that I use will generally differ according to your desires and interests but there are two books that I use for beginners:

1. Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 (this is for beginners in music reading).
2. Solo Guitar Playing Volume 1 (this is for beginners in music reading who are interested in classical training).

After 3 to 6 months of study with me, you will have been taught to read musical notation, have a basic knowledge of chords, and have most of the 5 major scale shapes memorized. You will have learned to pick and strum confidently. Most importantly, you will have learned 3 or 4 songs of your choosing so that you can see the fruit of your musical work and experience the joy of musical expression. (for these results students must be willing to practice for the necessary amount of time: 20-30 minutes a day)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Comfortable quiet room. Recording equipment. Internet musical resources. Guitars, Guitar effects, amps, and hardware. I provide my personally developed teaching material to you. I expect you, as a student, to bring a guitar, picks and a tuner.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my personally developed teaching material to you. I bring cables and equipment to adapt my guitar to an amp you may have. I also bring maintenance equipment in case I need to work on my guitar or yours. I expect you, as a student, to have a guitar, picks and a tuner. If you are taking electric guitar it is ideal that you have an amp. I also expect you to buy the necessary books. I bring my computer in order to have an internet source and an audio source. I have provided guitars and strings (if one broke during the lesson) in the past to students who are lacking them.

*** Specialties ***
Various Electric Guitar Styles such as Rock, Blues and Jazz harmony; I teach Classical and Acoustic Guitar, Music Theory, Improvisation, Music composition and Finger style.

Byron is an amazing teacher! Thanks to Byron, our son, who is autistic-high functioning, is learning far more than how to play the guitar. He is learning to sit in a chair for a half an hour, is learning to focus on notes and strings, and is learning to love music! It’s an amazing sight to see! We are grateful that our son, and others with special needs, can also learn to play the guitar. We appreciate Byron’s patience and fun approach. Teachers with his character and abilities are hard to find. Byron is a true blessing and gifted teacher. We highly recommend him to everyone!

Great guitar lessons

Mr. Byron has been the perfect match for both my boys! He began teaching my 10 year old a year ago. Before, Mr. Byron, my son had been through 2 other guitar teachers but neither one could get him to play. Mr. Byron was able to strike my son's interest by tapping into songs he enjoyed listening to and later bringing them to life on the guitar. As a result of Mr. Byron's great teachings, my 6 year old son was inspired to begin ukulele lessons with him. Mr. Byron is a great teacher! His passion and love for music will definitely inspire yet challange his students to more than meet their goals!

Lessons with Shannon was probably the best choice I have ever made :) I had no prior vocal trainings and did not understand even the breathing techniques of singing. But she has been super patient with me and has helped me improve in a span of a month (of course practicing a lot on my own time too). Thanks Shannon!!!!

Joe is a great instructor. I took lessons with him when I was 19 and then stopped. I hit a wall in my progress and was feeling uninspired for months. I was split in so many directions, I was not making any significant progress. I tried online for a while and then it hit me. Go see Joe again. I did and within the first week I was back on track.

If you are a new drummer, go see Joe! I remember when I was first learning from Joe. His teaching style makes it easy to learn.

If you are a drummer who is stuck in a rut and can't progress. Go see Joe. He'll get you back on track.

I won't stop now. I will continue to train with Joe until the student has out-mastered the master.
