I have a Master's in Music Technology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a Bachelor's in Music (Technology and Recording) from the University of Indianapolis.
I started on the piano when I was in elementary school. I began playing the clarinet, my primary instrument, in 6th grade. I then started playing the saxophone in 8th grade and started playing the flute in high school.
I have performed on all of these instruments in various types of concerts and have taught lessons for the past five years.

About Kathleen
For the last 40 plus years, I have taught children as young as 3 and adults as old as ahh they won't tell me!

I have been participating in band and musical programs for over 30 years in the Kansas City Area. I am activity in a brass octet called the "Joyful Sound Brass Ensemble". We play at nursing home, churches, and other function in and around our area.

I began my musical training when I was 5. I started on a small 12 bass accordion and loved it. I moved up to the full size accordions when I was 6 years old and it was as big as I was! I wanted to learn more, so my mom took pity on me and pulled out her alto saxophone for me when I was 8. My love of music grew more with each instrument I learned. With the help of my band teachers in middle school and high school,
I studied: Alto, tenor and bass saxophone, clarinet, flute,and piano before I left high school. My band instructor and his wife gave me a wonderful opportunity to play in the Stage band in high school along with a special band during the summer. Their guidance and encouragement lead me into a wonderful College where I studied music. In 1970, I graduated from Adams State College now (Adam's State University) in Alamosa Colorado in 1974 with a B.A. in Biology and a minor in Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to make it enjoyable for everyone and hopefully they learn and acquire the needed skills quickly in the process. I believe it takes a lot of positive reinforcement and repetitive motions to learn anything physical. Each person is different as is the speed they learn at, it all depends on a positive attitude and there dedication to try to do their best. The trick to learning is making it fun and wanting to keep doing it.

At first I introduce each student to various types of music. This helps them to recognize a rhythm, or understand alternatives to a difficult fingering. This helps with at home practicing, never let them get bored and not challenged.. I will be adding new music all the time for them to try. If there is something specific you really want to learn, I will help you with it. I will do my best to make sure that the piece is at your learning level or below. My goal is for them to succeed and not get frustrated in the process. Remember we can always use it later if it isn't just right for you now. .

I think sight-reading is very important. It develops a personal ability to read music (it pushes you to learn rhythm and note identification quickly) and this in turns builds more confidence in what you are doing. Now if we add duets to it, this will be even make more interesting and enjoyable. Usually the first time it seems hard, but we will take it slow and before long it becomes something that the student will look forward to. Reading music is the key to learning and enjoying music. Once this is done the student has had time to hear and beginning to explore. This is when a new and creative part begins with improvisation and learning to make your own music.It is simply waiting for your exploration.

The student will progress as fast or slow as they want. It all depends on how comfortable they are after each lesson. I will either assign a new lesson or use the last with something new to help you gain a better understanding of what was being taught and something new to learn each week. Each week will be different, and never the same unless that is what you want!

The student is asked to buy a lesson book for their instrument. A 3 ring binder with plastic inserts is also an excellent addition. to add the supplemental material that always seems to get lost somewhere? This book becomes part of your repertoire, maybe it will become your most valued and loved memories of how far you have gone.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Please bring your own instrument for your lessons, unless it is a piano :) I have a studio piano to give lessons on. Music lesson book is available for purchase for students individual instrument. I will furnish stands for the lessons.

There is parking and parents are welcome and encouraged to come in and join in the lesson or just wait, listen and watch. Its up to you,

I have worked with special need students, along with the gifted students. Every student has to be taught differently.
This is one thing I have had to learned to do with 40+ years of teaching and raising my own children and grandchildren.

I have played all genres of music at one time or another, but my favorite is playing in a old style swing Band. There is nothing sweeter than a good old dance band with swing and blues. I have far more training and exposure on the woodwind instruments because of my background, but will teach the others instruments gladly. Music is a gift that needs to be shared with generation to generation..

She was able to instruct a 10 year old so well that when she turned 11 and went to middle school she started in advanced band with the 8th graders. Her style of teaching is very centered on each child's needs and she knows when to add new music versus more difficult music to help the child move to the harder music pieces. I would definitely recommend her to anyone that asks.

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical replacement beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Carl's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

​Carl lives in Brookings, South Dakota. He enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman,September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

Every technical exercise should have a direct musical application, and every single lesson should be tailored to the student’s needs. Although not every student will want to become a professional flutist, my goal is to get every student to enjoy the process of working toward his or her greatest potential.

Michel Dew is an absolutely wonderful teacher. I asked her to teach me as an adult student and I have to say with Michel’s guidance “Old Dogs” really can learn new tricks. She was able to get me to produce a tone that I never dreamed could come from me. Not only is she great with her adult and young adult students, but she also has an incredible way with young children. I’ve had many first hand experiences observing her with kids and she is incredibly caring, nurturing, experienced, and fun. Her passion and knowledge of music shines through in her teaching. I am lucky to have her as a teacher.

Belt's passion for collaborative art has resulted in the participation and/or formation of several distinguished chamber ensembles throughout his career including the Aeolus Saxophone Quartet, Duo Velocipede, Mana Quartet, Impression Saxophone Ensemble, and Singularity. Through his involvement with these groups Cole has been heard in concert halls across the U.S. and Europe in masterclass settings, competitions, music festival residencies, chamber series, and guest artist recitals. Regarding his recent Carnegie Hall debut Cole has been described as "a splendid performer who brings wonderful spirit and life to my music" by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Charles Wuorinen and by Curtis Institute composer David Ludwig as "at once sensitive, nuanced, brash, and daring: all depending on the demands of the music." 

As an undergra
duate, Cole traveled with the Aeolus Saxophone Quartet to perform world premieres of Jens Marggraf's Three Dances in Germany and Poland as guest artists. He then returned to Poland, during his Masters degree at Florida State University, for five more concerts with the Impression Saxophone Ensemble at international chamber music festivals.

Praised by composer Neil Anderson-Himmelspach for their "precision of rhythms, intonation, clarity of articulation, and sensitivity to radical shifts of mood..." Duo Velocipede is a salient combination of flute and saxophone. They had their inaugural performance at the Biennial Festival of New Music in early 2013. Since then, they have continued to perform around Florida, Georgia, and recently performed a guest artist recital at Harford College in Aberdeen, Maryland.  Anderson-Himmelspach in currently writing a concerto for the Duo.

Singularity performed first for the International Ligeti Festival and Symposium in 2013 where they collaborated with Lukas Ligeti on his quartet Frozen State of Song. Since then they have performed for Michael Maccaferri, clarinetist for the three time Grammy winning sextet eighth blackbird, who praised them for their "...unfaltering rhythmic precision and razor sharp ensemble playing with a sensitive and thoughtful interpretation of the score..." in regard  to their championing of Pulitzer Prize winning composer Charles Wuorinen's Quartet. Singularity made their Carnegie Hall debut in May of 2015.

Cole is a D'Addario Performing Artist and uses Reserve Classic Reeds, exclusively.

Lessons with Cole helped me grow not only as a saxophonist, but as a musician and person as well. He was my lessons TA for a year at Florida State University. Very patient and willing to work with his students, yet he knows when you are putting in an honest effort and when you are not. In our time together at FSU he demonstrated a wide array of knowledge and ability on the saxophone and music, including many discussions about music history, different musical styles, and transfers we can make from other instruments. If you work hard, and are honest with both Cole and yourself, you will find yourself learning a great deal and making a great friend along the way. I would recommend lessons from him to anyone.

I took lessons from Cole during my siohmore year in college. Within just a few months he had identified and corrected 3 major problems in my playing that no other teacher had noticed. Many of my friends have taken lessons with Cole as well and no one has had a bad experience.
As a teacher Cole was never late and always made me comfortable asking questions. Cole can also explain abstract, difficult to grasp concepts like no other teacher I've had before.

Cole Belt was my saxophone teacher during my first year at the Florida State University, and he had a huge impact on my approach to musicianship, both as a musician and as a human being. He helped me to realize my long and short term goals as a musician and guided me to achieving my utmost potential during my time as his student. His meditative and methodical approach to teaching and instrumental music-making is comprehensive and simplistic in nature, and he was always able to provide critical advice and various perspectives when I learning to establish my own musical concepts of phrasing, etc. I experienced growth during every lesson due to his preparation and knowledge of the instrument. But, most importantly, he was clear in his direction, and patiently provided multiple approaches to the same concept when I was having trouble understanding. He challenged me to expect more out of myself, and I am very thankful for the incredible foundation he helped me to establish during my first year as a undergraduate music student. I have seen him lead masterclasses with musicians of all ages, and he would be a lovely teacher to any woodwind student, at any level of development.
