About Tracy
I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so
I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

About Daniel
Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Customized approach to the individual based on needs and goals.

I've found a keeper instructor. Lots of good players out there teach guitar, but somehow it just doesn't work out. Dan has plenty of experience playing, but it takes serious talent to teach others. Daniel has both! Sets goals for students based on their needs/aspirations. If you don't click with Dan, you might need another path, like tennis or swimming....

Welcome to Chicago Flute Academy! Adults, teens, and kids welcome, with all backgrounds and goals. Flexible lesson times and in-home lessons available to suit your budget and schedule.

About Jennifer
Hi, my name is Jenny, and I am a Chicago-based flutist and teacher. It's nice to "meet" you! :)

Would you like to enjoy learning the flute?

I have a variety of flexible times available to suit your busy schedule and budget. I offer lessons at my home studio in Edgewater. I also provide in-home lessons, to make music more accessible to all families. I have a flexible make-up lesson policy - you'll always get what you pay for each month. I strive to give each student their full time, even with a late arrival. Additionally, I provide consultations for choosing the flute and often travel with my students to find the right instrument. I also offer assistance in preparing young students for competitions, auditions, and school band/orchestra.

Students and parents tell me that my teaching style is fun, personalized, and challenging, whi
le my personality is easy-going and friendly. :) I genuinely want to meet the needs of each student and parent - and teach to the nature of each student. I seek to empower my students to make their own choices and keep communication open and constructive with parents.

In lessons, my students play duets and solos from all eras of music, work on having great flute technique, and learn to express themselves through music.

Every year, we have a Spring recital and a handful of low key studio gatherings, so family, students, and friends can enjoy celebrating our achievements in music.

Many of my students in the past have won local festival competitions, have been featured in solo performances, and have continued to play flute for years!

I currently hold a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University, and I'm a member of The Evanston Symphony Orchestra. I have experience teaching large classrooms, small sectionals, and private lessons, and have worked with over 400 students in the past eight years. Additionally, I occasionally play flute and piccolo in Chicago City-Wide Orchestra. I also enjoy improvisation and experimental music! At the beginning of the school year, you can find me teaching flute clinics at school music programs throughout Chicago.

---

Thanks so much for visiting my profile! Flute on!

Sincerely,
Jenny

I worked with Jenny at After School Learning Tree in 2014 and 2015. She was my colleague and assistant at my flute studio. Throughout our time teaching together, I saw her display so much care and attention to detail in each lesson. She was always giving me new ideas. The families at our studio invest a lot in the education of their kids, and after a while people were raving to me about her coaching and instruction. Jenny has a world-class training, yet she is so down to earth. She really cares about the students and wants to connect with them on an individual level. I was blown away by her skill as a teacher, and I saw so much improvement in each student’s playing after every lesson. I would HIGHLY recommend people to study with her.

About Paul
I have my bachelors degree in sacred music, my masters degree in music performance, and my doctorate in worship studies. I am an experienced music teacher with great interpersonal skills and enjoy creating a fun and meaningful learning environment for all ages of students. I teach music theory concepts as I teach music, and I also enjoy sharing the history of music and famous composers. Students should not just learn notes, but they should also learn about the wonderful story of music I have taught private clarinet, flute, saxophone, voice, and piano lessons for many years with great success. Many of my former students write to me periodically to tell me what they are doing in music. I look forward to working with many more students as we embark on the journey of learning music, pieces, history, and theory together. Students will look ba

TL;DR: Sign up now. Do it! Mr. Hoover is talented, professional, attentive, punctual, organized and effective.

I've taken music lessons my entire life, and I've had bad, mediocre, good and excellent teachers before. Mr. Hoover is excellent. It _never_ once felt like he was phoning it in or killing time-- lessons were well-structured and tailored to help me achieve my personal goals as a musician.

I'm moving away from Chicago for a new job opportunity and am sad to discontinue lessons with him, as I learned a lot in a very short amount of time. I encourage any folks at any age wishing to learn the flute to sign up.

From first lesson through advanced high school students, I focus on quality of tone production and musicality.

About Hunter
My primary teaching philosophy revolves around the ideas of creativity and cooperative problem solving. I believe that all musicians should be actively training their ears as well as their abilities on their instrument. I focus on all elements of basic musicianship while incorporating improvisation and composition in an inspiring way.

I grew up playing jazz, soul, R&B, folk, reggae, ska, funk, and classical music. I feel very comfortable working within all of these genres in both performance and educational atmospheres.

Regardless of age, learning a new instrument or art form can be daunting, so I like to include some sort of entertaining activities to keep tension low and inspiration high.

As a musician, I believe every child should have the right to pursue the arts. In my teaching, I work with students to not only help improve their playing but to give them access to the many benefits and joys of playing music.
I have instructed flute lessons for students ages elementary through senior in high school. I welcome students of all levels, whether beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
All lessons will focus on the fundamentals, including tone, technique, breathing, posture, articulation, phrasing, musicality, etc. Other aspects of music will also be addressed, such as theory, history and repertoire.

Who can take lessons?
Anyone and everyone! Total beginners to experienced musicians. I gladly encourage and accept all flutists from any background with any level of experience! I believe each flute player has a unique voice that we can, together, study, practice, and hone into a beautiful sonority.

What will we do during the lesson? How do I prepare?
Lesson time is meant for learning new concepts/techniques/ways to practice. It is all about the exchange of information! Some portion of lesson time may be designated for duets, questions, music theory/history/ear training, etc. The majority of the lesson will be spent working on technique, rhythm, tone, repertoire, and whatever else the student may need. The individual student is expected to practice to prepare for each lesson - how much time is based on the individual flutist. Many factors contribute to deciding the appropriate amount of practice time, and together we will assess what works for the student and their goals.
