As a a trained composer, music theory is one of my favorite things, but anyone can learn it with a little effort. I'll help you prepare for college music classes (or help you crush music theory with ongoing tutoring). I take a practical view of theory based on real examples from real music. (My on-site library comes in handy here -- I'm an enthusiastic collector.) Trained as a composer, I can help you see with sudden clarity how the notes are actually working together.

About John

I've been teaching privately and lecturing in the Chicago area since 1998. I offer an exceptionally deep repertoire knowledge to target the student's interests, strengths, and areas of growth. Along with my sense of which books and repertoire to assign at a given stage of your musical journey, I of

Great Teacher

Phyllis is the best singing teacher I have ever had. She is completely knowledgeable about technique and personalizes each class for her students. Phyllis is so sweet, and believes that there is a singing voice inside of all of us. Since I have started taking lessons with her, my range has expanded and not only that, I have gained new knowledge about sheet music that I had never heard before. I would highly recommend choosing her as your teacher.

I’m not usually one to write reviews but Jeff is such a great teacher. He really helped to develop my playing to where now I consider myself a confident bassist. His style of teaching not only helped me to be a better bassist, but also helped me internalize musical concepts that will help me for the rest of my life. I strongly recommend Jeff if you are looking for someone to really take you to the next level!

As a pick up, know nothing guitar player myself I was really impressed with Jeff’s attitude and dedication to music and fostering the learning of music. 10/10 THANKS Jeff!

"I enjoyed taking lessons with Molly. I was skeptical about taking singing lessons online because I much prefer taking lessons in person. However, molly was able to provide feedback that helped me improve on my vocal techniques. She made me feel comfortable, which is important because vocal exercises can be at times strange, but necessary. I would recommend Molly for those who want to take lessons."

"Calling Ahmad was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I spent almost a year trying to "teach myself" how to play the guitar, mostly as a new hobby, with little progress and a lot of frustration. Ahmad has been my teacher for about 7 months, and it has completely renewed my interest in investing the time to learn to play. Ahmad is extremely patient, makes playing/practicing fun, and offers flexible scheduling (which is extremely helpful when balancing multiple commitments). I have nothing but great things to say about Ahmad. I would recommend him to anyone and will be continuing to take lessons here for a long time to come!"

"My son has been taking lessons with Catherine for almost 2 years. We started with in-person lessons and then went to doing the lessons online. She is extremely knowledgeable about music and bagpipes and my son is learning a lot from her. I also started taking lessons from her and even though I didn't pick it up as fast as my son she was able to get me up on pipes. She is great about sending videos to help with practicing and always has great feedback during lessons."
