About Matthew

I teach because I love it... I love seeing a student reach their goals.

I’ve been working with music students for long enough now that I am able to quickly determine what their next best action should be… the action that will enable them to grow & evolve as guitar players. I have a keen sense of ascertaining a student’s skill level, so that I can quickly get them into working on the musicianship skills that will transform their playing. My sessions are efficient: they are very effective, very quickly.

As a beginner, you can approach the learning process in a way that keeps it fun & exciting while building the techniques & vocabulary that you use every day.
The cool thing about the guitar is that all of the chords & strumming patterns that you learn from day one are the same chords & strumming patterns you’ll use as an intermediat

e or advanced player. You don’t have to start with super basic “baby” steps & then learn what the “real” players use later down the road. You get to immediately start with the real deal.

About David

Composer and guitarist David began formal music training at the age of 5 on the drums. He taught himself guitar as a teenager and began playing in local rock bands. Initially entering college as a Journalism major, his passion for music led him to Meramec College where he studied Music Theory with Robert C. Howard and classical guitar with Larry Bolles. From 1990 through 1993, he attended Webster University, and became only the second composer in the school's history to receive the BM/MM Scholarship. While at Webster, he studied composition with Dr. Kendall Stallings, Robert Chamberlin, and Kim Portnoy, Jazz History with Paul Demarinis, and 18th Century Counterpoint with Dr. Eloise Jarvis. During his education, he performed with many student ensembles and sat in on master classes by the great sitarist and surbaharist, Imrat Khan and jazz

guitarist Peter Leitch.

In 1993 he started St. Louis SoundWorks with Grammy nominated Adam Long and Mark McClanahan that specialized in mobile recording, and composing music for films and commercials.

As a musician, David has composed over 200 pieces for various instruments and combinations from small chamber ensembles to full orchestra. He was bandleader of two creative ensembles that focused on alternative notation compositions and improvised music, and later co-founded the avant-garde influenced rock band Diverted Course which released two CD's.

As a teacher, David has taught classical guitar and musicianship as an adjunct faculty member at Meramec College and Webster University. He has given seminars on the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Anthony Braxton. He has been teaching privately for 23 years and many of his students have gone on to successful music careers and performed all over the world.

About Richard

Music is my life. Since the age of 16, I have studied the guitar extensively. During my high-school years I was involved in band, marching band, choir, and independent music theory. I started my first band when I was 19 in the U.S. Army, and my life has never been the same since. I played music professionally in local bands while attending UMSL and have been teaching guitar and musical performance to many students privately for the last 7 years while developing and exploring my own musical goals. Recently I have written, produced, and performed on 5 original music albums, toured from St Louis to Texas and Colorado, and have learned many things about humanity and our culture's relationship to music. Those who share a passion for music form an extraordinary community. Come take the first step toward your potential...

*** Lesson Detai

ls ***
My students can expect professional, expert advise from a working performance artist. One of my main philosophies is a focus on fun. If music is fun, then students will practice more - which leads to accelerating returns. My students can expect lessons tailored to their specific goals. First I will discuss with the student musical influences and genre preferences, then I will assess the student's current abilities and we will begin designing a weekly regimen of practice and study. As a product of the Internet generation, I recommend using all the tools available to my students including the Internet to further their goals. My students will also learn to perform with other musicians, so we will typically have a segment of each lesson dedicated to jam time. Whether my students aspire to be professional performance artists, impress their love interests, or just rock out in their bedrooms, I work with my students so that they can do exactly that.

*** Studio Equipment ***
one bedroom apt...hardwood floor...central room for studio...music stands, room parents to sit, chairs...

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring a music stand, an acoustic guitar, my handout literature, and any other equipment (mic, stand, vocal amp, electric guitar, guitar amp) based on what my students want to learn. I expect my students to own whatever instruments they want to learn.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching acoustic and electric guitar and stage performance. I teach using handouts that I customize for students and have lessons made up around different concepts such as - learning to identify what key a song is in - how to use 3 chord combinations - learning scales and when to use them - these type of things. I usually teach based on how I learned, which includes - using the Internet to learn songs - how to figure out how a particular song is played - getting into good practice habits - etc. My genres of specialty are Blues, Rock/Classic Rock/Southern Rock, and Acoustic Singer/Songwriter. What I like to do is ask a student what kind of music or songs they would like to learn, then build them up to the level they need to be to play those songs or that style of interest.

Richard was amazing! Always a joy to have him in the house. He was always on time and well prepared for our daughter's lessons. He also kept the lessons entertaining for her. Our daughter learned a lot and definitely improved quite a bit during the time he worked with her. We would highly recommend Richard to any parent with a child interested in learning and playing guitar.

About Jessica

Dear students and parents,

Hello and welcome to takelessons.com! My name is Jessica and I am classically trained violinist with over 20 years of playing experience. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and recently relocated to Saint Louis County with my family. Music has always been passion of mine since a very young age, so it was inevitable that it would end up being my career. Naturally, a love for teaching the wonders of music followed suit!

I always try to form a great rapport with my students and parents from the very first lesson. For younger students, I encourage my parents to take an active part in both lessons and daily practice, as is encouraged by Shinichi Suzuki.

I've been teaching violin and viola professionally for over 12 years now. My experience includes teaching private lessons at students homes as wel

l as at various music schools, summer camps and festivals. A few advanced students have even attended and performed in some of these aforementioned festivals! I am always encouraging my students to go above and beyond.

A bit of background about me: I started my music studies at the age of 7. Lessons and orchestra were literally the highlight of my childhood. I ended up attending the Baltimore School for the Arts for high school, and went on to receive my Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Shenandoah University and complete further studies in England, Northern Ireland and Maryland (UMBC graduate certificate). I am also a registered Suzuki Violin/Viola teacher and have attended many teachers workshops in order to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to work with any and all types of students, including those with learning disabilities, such as ADD and FAS.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I am a registered Suzuki violin teacher, I do not teach solely out of a certain method or "by the book"; I choose and mold every lesson depending on specific, strengths, weaknesses, etc. If you are a more advanced, serious player, more intensive lessons and repertoire will follow suit.

I am comfortable teaching all ages and levels up to advanced. Use of games make learning the violin fun and accessible for young children. Older and more advanced students receive a more technical, intensive and advanced approach. Coaching and weekly help on school assigned materials (orchestra/string class music and homework) Classical, Jazz, Gypsy and Fiddle styles are all introduced and studied to give students a rounded technique. Music theory (reading and understanding music) is incorporated in lessons. Repertoire is diverse and exciting. Various approaches for the visual or aural learner. Guaranteed to keep you or your child engaged and interested!

*** Equipment and Studio Lesson Details ***

-If you are coming to my home for lessons, please be sure to bring your instrument and any books you may already have.

**Please note, there are three cats in the house. They are usually isolated to a different part of the house during lessons to ensure there are no unnecessary distractions and to help minimize potential allergies (studio is also sprayed with allergy reducer spray and vacuumed regularly). All are UTD on shots. Please call and ask to schedule a "trial" lesson to see if the animals interfere with allergies.

New students:
You may park on the cul-de-sac next to the house and walk down.
I have a trial 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 size violin to use for the first lesson if your child is a beginner.
After the first lesson I will send an email explaining what materials and equipment I recommend you buy to help you sound your best.

Places to rent or buy instruments will be recommended upon request.

*** Cancellation/Reschedule Requests ***
1) At least 24 hours notice is required if you need to cancel your, or your child's, lesson. You will be given the option to take a credit that will automatically roll over to cover future unpaid lessons on your calendar, or the option to reschedule for a different day within a week of the canceled lesson.

2) If you find that you need to cancel with less than 24 hours notice you will be given the option to make up your lesson within 7 calendar days of your originally scheduled lesson time. If you cannot do a makeup lesson, this will result in the lesson being marked as "missed" and will still be charged as if you attended the lesson.

3) If you do not show up to your lesson scheduled at my home studio and no notice was given, the lesson will be marked as "missed" and will still be charged as if you attended the lesson.

4) If I need to reschedule or cancel a lesson for whatever reason, you will be given an option for a makeup lesson or given a credit that will automatically roll over to cover future unpaid lessons.

5) I require two weeks notice to discontinue lessons if you would like to receive a refund or be exempt from paying future tuition.

6) All lessons are billed ahead of schedule and must be paid in advance in order to keep your lesson slot.

About Daniela

Hi ! My name is Daniela and I can't wait to meet you!
I have been teaching piano and theory since 1994 and have loved helping my students discover the beautiful world of music. Seeing my students grow into well rounded and educated people that love art, are able to recognize different styles of music, express their feelings and emotions on this wonderful instrument makes me really happy. My students range from people who simply want to learn how to play proficiently as a hobby to students who are considering making music their future career.
I strongly believe that a chance to go on a big stage and play on a great Steinway piano in front of people, makes a big difference in children's lives: teaches them self control, gives them great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Taking part in festivals and piano competitions helps

with building high self esteem even more.
I look forward to helping you and your children to reach your goals!

Daniela is wonderful and our lessons are always fun. She lets me play pieces that I enjoy plus introduces me to new music that she believes I will also enjoy. She allows me to play freely but will correct my mistakes (wrong fingering :). But this only make me a better player and learning a new piece easier. As an adult learner I cannot say enough good things about her and her style. I really enjoy my lessons with her and I highly recommend her.

Daniela is obviously a skilled piano teacher. She connects well with my 8 year old son, and I am continually surprised by all of the details that she is able to perceive over skype- every finger placement, gesture, etc. She is careful, thorough, and kind. We are thankful to have found her.

About Keith

I was a combined piano performance and theory major at Texas Christian University. I was fortunate to have studied with some of the best teachers in the world, including Mme. Lili Kraus, Miklos Ivanich and Dr. Stephen Swedish. After college I taught fro several years to mostly grade and middle school students. I happy to say the after many years I am still in touch with many of them and they are still playing, and appreciate that I taught them the love of music. I work at my student's pace. I do stress learning everything correctly before advancing. Students work at different paces, which is why I do not feel that group lessons are useful for many students. I am very patient with a student's progress as long as he or she is learning.

Playing piano is more than playing the right notes. It is more than adding your feeling to the music.

It is what inspired the composer to write a certain piece of music. What was his inspiration? It is the responsibility of the teacher to have studied in depth the composers to be able to transfer that message to the students.

My students range from total beginners (adults and children) to college students needing additional help preparing for juries and recitals.

If I could give Brian 10 stars, I would. He is enthusiastic, present, supportive and highly knowledgeable. Learning instruments has always been a challenge for me , but Brian makes being a banjo beginner an absolute joy. I look forward to practicing every day, and can really hear my progress - which amazes me because it's only been just over a month. I can see myself working with Brian for the long haul. He puts me at ease, and always gives great responsive tips that improve my playing immediately. I feel SO lucky to have stumbled across his profile.

About Kwame

Hello, my name is Kwame. I have been a musician for over twenty years. I started out in music when I was in grade school and have continued my musical journey throughout my adulthood. I have five years of experience teaching a wide range of age groups. Adjacent to being a musician, I am also a singer and songwriter. I have been involved with many of local and semi-professional bands in the surrounding area and perform from time to time as a solo artist or with a group. My mission as a musical teacher is to preserve the art of making music and pass it down as it was taught to me. I feel music is a very necessary element that makes the world go round!

Kwame is a great instructor!! He is knowledgeable about the craft he teaches and is great at explaining things in a comprehensible manner. "WE LOVE OUR DRUM INSTRUCTOR! My son was an extremely high energy very distracted five year old when we started lessons with Mr. Al. Let's just say that m
y son is not an easy student, but our son had already developed an obsessive attachment to music, most intensely to drums. We expected someone would be able to teach him drums, but we also got someone who is patient, flexible, understanding, and always respectful and kind to our son. We see Mr. Al in his home studio, and at now at seven years old, Joey's skill has definitely progressed. In fact, his learning has a momentum that our entire family can see. But Mr. Al has given Joey so much more than just that. Joey's love of music has flourished beyond measure. Joey now tells Mr. Al that he loves him after every lesson, WOW! We have been so pleased that my seventeen year old daughter now also takes lessons with Mr. Al too. Mr. Al is the perfect instructor for us. My kids think he's cool, and we think he's just fantastic all the way around!"

I don’t stay in the room for his classes, but what I notice with Ryan, is that my son is making steady progress and is taking up the banjo every day to practice, without me having to tell him too. That, to me, is an accomplishment on its own :)
Love these lessons, love Ryan who is friendly, relaxed and practical. Two thumbs up."

Blues Guitar Basics: How to Play a Blues Shuffle

By Megan L.

Ready to learn to play blues guitar? This lesson from guitar teacher James W. is the perfect place to start... What is a shuffle, anyway? A shuffle is a rhythm of 8th notes played in triplets, essentially playing 3/4 time over a 4/4 beat to make the music swing. Blues, pop, jazz, and rock musicians all use the shuffle. The blues shuffle is a fun pattern that is simple to absorb into your playing across many genres of music. Think of pop, rock, big band, and blues as being a part of the s …
