About Thomas

Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania

and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion
classical, jazz improvisation

Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

Private Flute Teacher

Instruction for fundamentals and techniques of flute as a primary instrument (or doubling instrument) in both classical and jazz styles.

About Stephanie

Hello, and thank you for your interest!

My name is Stephanie, I am a teaching-artist from El Paso, Texas. I currently reside, perform and teach in the Boston and greater Boston area.

I am a recent graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters and Graduate Diploma in Saxophone Performance. I received my Bacherlors in Music Education from New Mexico State University.

“A teaching artist, by definition, is a two-career professional: a working artist and a working educator. As a working artist is they are involved in an ongoing process of discovery, problem solving, discipline and refinement of skills in their discipline. As a working educator, it is essential that the artist is also developing a knowledge base and skills to be an effective partner in education. Achieving a meaningful balance between these two prof

essions, whereby one feeds the other, is an ongoing process that requires a deepening awareness for the teaching artist of what their teaching brings to their art and what their art teaches them about learning.”

I am devoted and dedicated to helping find each of my students' strengths, weaknesses and style of learning. Once I have identified these traits, I am able to develop lessons and repertoire that helps each students become the most efficient learner and best musician they can be.

I pride myself in creating a fun and safe learning environment in which I establish a firm musical foundation for my students. Lessons include: scales, etudes, articulation, dynamic and sight reading exercises, standard repertoire, recording and analyzing performances, music history lessons, and exploration of the sounds, genres and artists of saxophone/flute/clarinet/piano.

Simultaneously, my students cultivate many other skills while learning how to play their instrument. Students enhance their fine motor skills and ability to memorize, students increase their overall self-confidence and become self-sufficient and creative problem solvers. I am passionate about educating and empowering my students and I enjoy connecting with a wide array of musicians of all ages, playing levels and backgrounds.

Feel free to contact me to inquire about lessons, I hope to hear from you soon!

I'm an older student (old actually) who started piano 2 years ago with Stephanie . She is great for a beginning student. Knows how to teach. Is encouraging, but demanding enough to keep me on my toes. Just wonderful and a thoroughly lovely person.

Stephanie is a patient, knowledgeable, enthusiastic educator and collaborator who loves to perform and teach. I had the honor of working with her for nearly four years while we pursued similar degrees at New Mexico State University. She consistently brought a level of maturity and preparedness beyond her age to our rehearsals and practices. If I was limited to only one word to describe her, it would be "professional".

Private Flute Teacher

I am a graduate of the Juilliard School Pre-College Division and currently a flute performance major at Temple University. I have performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kimmel Center as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician. I am passionate about music and hope to share this passion with you through flute-playing.

About Serena

I am a classically-trained flutist currently working towards my BM in flute performance at Temple University. In the past, I have attended musical institutions such as the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Orford Music Academy.

It is my belief that a music teacher should not only help students improve on their respective instruments, but also provide resources and opportunities to listen to live performances and play in ensembles. I have experience working with students who are just learning to make a sound on the flute, as well as students preparing for college auditions. Throughout my musical career, I have encountered many inspiring teachers who have made me the flutist I am today, and I hope to be one of those people for you.

Tom
"Roberta is an excellent instructor, per the fuller review that follows this summry.

I come to the flute late in life, though with a background in Celtic
music on simpler wind instruments. Roberta has guided me skillfully and with compassionate direction since I embarked on my flute journey. She is helping me make the transition from folk instruments to the flute in as painless a manner as is likely to be possible. I look forward to each lesson and am highly motivated to practice in order to continue to derive the full benefits of Roberta's considerable knowledge, wisdom, artistry and instructional skill. When a particular element of a lesson goes well, it is sometimes hard to tell who is the most delighted--the student or the teacher."

"My daughter Clarisse had her first lesson with Kelly today, and we are very happy with how the lesson went. Kelly is professional and skilled as a teache
r, as well as a fantastic flutist herself. We look forward to future lessons to take Clarisse's flute playing to a whole different level."

"Carey is excellent. She is a very accomplished flutist with great teaching and people skills. Carey is extremely skillful in figuring out areas of impro

"Tony is a great instructor for serious students of clarinet, flute or saxophone. My daughter started with him as a regular 8th grade flute player - not b
ad, but not great either. Over the course of three years, she has progressed to the point where she made regionals as a sophomore and junior (1st chair orchestra as a junior), and also made all-state as a junior.

My daughter needs a patient and consistent type of teacher, and after a couple of months, Tony and Natalia were working together quite well, as her progress has shown. Of course, Natalia put in the the practice time as well, as she is not quite a musical prodigy, so she has had to work. Tony has supported her all along and been flexible with lessons and time as needed for upcoming events.

My son took saxophone lessons for the last 3 years as well. While quite talented, he doesn't like to work and focus on his music, so he only just almost regional 3 years in a row. That's not really Tony's fault, as he tried to show my son how to get the most out of his practice time, but regardless of talent, music takes work.

I'd gladly give Tony 5 stars for clarinet, as that is his principal instrument, and he is a great clarinetist, but my kids took flute and saxophone from him, which are instruments he doubles on professionally. However, Tony is an honest person, and he would let you know when the time comes for a change to a higher level professional on the secondary instruments. Most students will not ever get there, although it could happen for students planning to make a profession of musical performance."
