Having been a performer for many years, I've developed a method of flute education that is fool-proof. In lessons, we'll discuss tone production, technique, important repertoire, interpretation, musical context, and basic theory in order to become a well-rounded musician, not just a flute player! I aim to keep lessons fun, exciting, and engaging through the student's musical journey.

About Matthew

I believe everyone deserves to feel total confidence in what they do. Students who feel confident as players end up feeling more confident in many other aspects of their lives. As a performer myself, the best feeling comes right after a particularly fantastic performance, and this feeling continues

I can’t say enough about lessons with Matt! My daughter treats me to a little recital in our living room after every lesson because she’s so excited to show me what they worked on that week. It’s become a part of our routine! We love it!

My daughter has been taking lessons with Matt for 3 years and he’s made such a difference in her flute playing! She leaves every lesson with a smile on her face and is so excited to practice. She was chosen for All State band two years in a row and is considering music education as her college major.

Matt is an amazing flutist and teacher. He really is a consummate professional. Not only is his playing an inspiration, he is able to share his great knowledge and apply it to areas you specifically need. He gives the student a great foundation, and also helps you achieve the highest level of artistry. Fantastic!

I've played flute for 13 years and throughout that time have performed multiple times for various events, been involved in band, and have taken lessons.

I do not teach flute to children under 10 because of the way the instrument strains the neck and wrists on younger children. I do suggest a trial session to see if the child is big enough, but if not I would love to do recorder or piano lessons. These instruments will both prepare the child greatly for playing flute in the future..

I base the lessons on what my students want to learn and are interested in. I let my students chose the songs that they want to learn from the books I suggest they purchase. I want my students to have fun while learning to play the flute and learning to read music.

Mrs. Rachel is a wonderful music teacher! My daughter takes clarinet lessons with her and I can tell how fast she learned in a short period of time. She is knowledgeable, fun and very flexible with our busy schedule.

My son began piano lessons with Rachel nearly two years ago and we have been very happy working with her. He has progressed steadily and is continually challenged to improve. She selects musical pieces that fit his personal interests as well as more traditional pieces with increasing complexity. We hope to continue learning with her for many more years to come.

I am experienced in most styles: Jazz, Pop, Classical, Latin, R&B, Funk, Rock etc…
After discussing your goals, we will figure out the best way to accomplish those goals!

I am a really easy-going person and I want you to have FUN and discover new stuff every time you play your instrument.

After we figure out what you want to play and what areas we want to work on, I will make a special curriculum for you! Each student has a different curriculum that is specific to his or her level and learning style. I give a weekly curriculum after every lesson so you don’t need to worry about forgetting what we worked on at our lesson and you can work on it at home. Looking at past curriculum also provides an excellent way to look at a student’s progress.

One of the most important aspects of playing a woodwind instrument is achieving a good tone. I will help you get a good tone by teaching the fundamentals: from how to hold your instrument, how to blow, etc…

Hello! My name is Rachel, and I have been playing flute for 12 years. I am almost finished with my music education degree at the University of New Hampshire, where I was principal chair for the 2019-2020 season in their prestigious Wind Symphony. I believe that there is no one way to teach a student. I do not set expectations about what a student should or should not be able to do at any given moment; I instead meet every student where they are, figure out how best to help that student achieve what they want to achieve, and help them to grow as a player with guidance and positivity. I feel as if my strengths lie in teaching multiple concrete ways to improve technique, tone, and musicality, and each method is catered to each individual student. I teach with the methods of Marcel Moyse in mind, as he taught my previous teacher, Peggy Vagts.

I have been taking flute lessons with Rachel for about two years now, both up at the University of New Hampshire and on line now since March. Rachel is a patient, very knowledgeable, kind person who has been an incredible teacher! Her knowledge about the flute and music has opened up a whole new musical world for me. I would highly recommend her to new students, people returning to the flute after decades away (like me), and established players. She is the best.

"My daughter (who is now in college) was a student of Michelle’s from 4th – 11th grade. Michelle is a talented musician, a wonderful person, and a very effective teacher. My daughter really enjoyed her lessons with Michelle - it was always a bright spot in her busy week. She benefited from Michelle’s guidance outside of lessons also – recitals, entering and placing in solo competitions, and auditioning and playing for the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. We felt so lucky to have found Michelle – she was an excellent teacher and a wonderful role model - teacher, musician, mother. I recommend her very, very highly."

"I would highly recommend Bill as a flute teacher. He is a wonderful flautist, himself, in addition to being so skilled at several other instruments. Bill is very professional, kind, patient, and has always made me feel that he is interested in understanding where I would like to go, in terms of the kind of music I would like to play and the level of proficiency I am aiming to attain. I picked up my flute after 40 years of not touching it (since I was a teenager) and I'm so happy I did. Like many of the other students who have responded on this page, I have learned so much from Bill and have really enjoyed both his lessons, and my personal journey of practice and improvement as a flautist."
