Actors and Singers
Auditions!!
They are definitely the most difficult and nerve wracking part of being an actor or singer, right? Booking work means your audition has to be as good as opening night.
Auditioning is about preparation and preparation takes consistent support. Look, showbiz is not a business about being alone. Artists thrive when working together. We are a collaborative bunch and collaborating to make sure you're ready and organized for your auditions makes sense.
Stop trying to muscle through this necessary step alone. No one who works consistently does that! They ask for help. ASK FOR HELP!!
Solidify your acting choices so you don't have to worry about them the day before your audition. Know your prep so you can internally drop into it when the casting director says, "Whenever you're ready."
Have your music material and performance choices prepared ahead of time.
BE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
Work with me when your agent sends you your sides so you show up READY. Know your lines. It's OK if your struggling with memorization.
Let's figure out How YOU memorize.
Let me coach you for online audition submissions.
If we are working virtually I will coach while you are taping yourself to submit your online audition. It works!
Let me collaborate with on script analysis in order for you to you understand your material before you audition.
Take your work seriously so you bring your most intelligent and inspiring work to the audition rooms.

Kathryn is an amazing teacher! I've been working with her for nearly a year now. At first I was hesitant doing classes online, but I don't regret taking the leap. I've definitely improved my acting skills in the months we've been working together; she gives great feedback and really cares about her students, not ONLY in the way of their acting skills. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to get into acting. I started out knowing nothing and I can say 100% that what I know now is largely in part of Kathryn!

I always try and surround myself with people who give me confidence and make me better. Kathryn does both of those. She doesn't view you as a dollar sign but as an artist. She's the coach that sends you "Happy Birthday" and "Get Well Soon" texts because she genuinely cares.

I've been with her for over a year already and have no plans of stopping. Thank you so much, Kathryn. :)

I have participated in musical performance in many facets throughout my education in music. From show choirs, to concert choirs, musical theater to opera, I have seen almost all of it, and at nearly every level. During high school I participated in school concert band, jazz band, show choir, numerous small ensembles, and several solo performances. I also performed in several community musicals; "The King and I," "Oliver," and "Man of LaMancha," During this time I was taken under the tutelage of Mr. Leland Finecy, a private voice instructor well accomplished in national performance, and pedagogy, and a long time student of the late Berton Coffin, Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, and long time international voice instructor. In college I continued my development in concert band, concert choir, jazz band, and small ensembles, but as time progressed I focused more on my solo voice work. During this time I began to teach, starting a voice studio as a requirement of ...

About Bryan
Hello! Music has consumed me from a very young age, and has been a defining force ever since. I started singing in Kindergarten, and began playing the viola, cello, and saxophone in middle school. During high school, while performing in every vocal and band solo and ensemble I could, it became very clear that I wanted to pursue music in college. I attended Hastings College, a private liberal arts college in the heart of Nebraska, where I received my Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance. During college, and since, I have had a private music studio teaching students piano, voice, and a little guitar from ages 5 to 87, so I have seen a great deal of talent over the years. I enjoy all ages and genders, but having been a male in music I am aware of the stigma young males face regarding music. Being a veteran and a musician has allowe
d me to incorporate characteristics from both in my approach to teaching, and in showing it is very cool to be a male in music!

Education:
Private Vocal Student 1994-2006
Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance, Hastings College 2000-2006 (interrupted due to military)

Areas of Instruction:

Lesson Details:
The first few lessons for instrumental instruction will be familiarization. The first several lessons, and throughout all lessons for voice, we will learn about the bodies connection to the voice and the mechanics behind it.

After we are familiar with each other and our instruments of choice, we will begin on some basic music knowledge (theory). Super beginning for the youngsters, and more formal if you are an older student.

After approximately 3-6 months, depending on how much you practice, we will begin working on actual songs, and plugging in what we have learned so far into the songs, and using that material to advance in our learning.

I am excited to work with you!! Thank you!

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
Methods used for instruction depend on the student. I have found what works for one may not work for all. However, I approach the vocal process from the basics of breathing combined with resonation points, and the modifications of such points based off of pitch, tone, and volume requirements. I instruct on personal voice points, meaning identify those parts where resonation lacks, and finding the right modifiers to safely approach those points, in an attempt to create an effortless sound which is safe to recreate every time.

Beginning, should the student not have any music theory knowledge, basic instruction will be presented. It is my opinion that a foundation in theory knowledge must be present to fully comprehend and utilize the vocal instruction.

My son is 7 years old and can sometimes be a little hyper. He has seizures so he is on this medication that makes him a little hyper. I have to say that Bryan is very patient with my son and my son loves going to piano lessons. When he is sick and have to miss class, he actually cries. I live in Mountain House and Brian lives in Oakley, which is a little drive for us. I have to say, it is very much worth the drive. My son had no experience with piano before he started with Bryan and I have to say that he has learned so much in these past few months. Bryan is an excellent teacher and as long as I can afford him, I will definitely continue to take my son to piano lessons.

She is helping my daughter improve her technique (breathing, posture, range, etc.), while keeping lessons positive and encouraging, and finding music that my daughter enjoys. Beginning to advanced in all genres of popular music.

About Shana
Singer. Songwriter. Performer. Musician.
2015 Jazz Search West Winner. Former cast member of Fix My Choir on the Oxygen Channel. Up and coming Bay Area Artist. Read more..

Carrying a tune with angelic excellence. Conveying emotion through song and stage presence. Captivating an audience. For singer, songwriter and performer Shana Dinha it all began with "Phantom of the Opera."

An Assyrian-American born into a musical family, Shana’s musician family took her to see the play in London when she was 5 years old. It moved her. It inspired her. And she couldn’t stop singing once it ended – which turned out to be a good thing.

"When I don’t sing I’m not myself," she says.

Shana’s identity is a passionate artist, one who grew up invested in her craft. Unlike Phantom’s lead character she didn’t disappear in the face of the personal
and professional challenges that came along with it. She revealed herself, embraced the spotlight, and used her talent, her faith, and the love in her heart to achieve award-winning acclaim.

In 2008 Shana was awarded The Superior Command Solo Performance from California Music Education Association. A year later she claimed an Outstanding Vocalist Award from Music in the Parks & toping it with another Superior Command Solo Performance from California Music Education Association in 2010. Then in 2015 following a turn on Oxygen reality television series "Fix My Choir," she melodically belted her way to victory at world-renowned jazz club Yoshi’s, winning the competition, Jazz Search West. Possessing the ear-catching ability to skillfully sing gospel and R&B as well as jazz, Shana’s gift is destined to keep on giving.

Born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Pleasanton, California, Shana’s desire to sing was encouraged by her parents. "They gave me every opportunity for music lessons and also put me in choirs, she recalls. Shana was introduced to gospel by singing in urban choirs, though she gravitated toward R&B and jazz. Unfortunately those genres weren’t the only things she became attracted to.

After high school Shana attended DeAnza College. It took her 4 years to finish a 2-year program and receive her Associate of Arts in Social and Behavioral Sciences. It was delayed by a run of self-sabotaging life choices. I wasn’t loving myself very much," she admits. "I was in a hole. I was dealing with depression."

Concerned for both her well-being and the future of her potential music career, Shana decided continuing her education was the key to her survival. With her life on track she pursued and was offered a scholarship to attend Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Her parents, however, were concerned she’d regress in that environment. Shana would find herself having a literal come to Jesus moment.

"I realized the best thing I could do in that moment was to go and find a gospel choir just to sing in church, she says.

Once Shana found a church choir to join she asked its director if they knew of any professional choirs. Shana was recommended to JaRon Thompson who is the cousin of Terrance Kelly, Artistic Director of Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. This opportunity led to Shana working with a group called "Flow" that was managed by award-winning singer, composer, and Recording Academy member Nona Brown.

"Right away I got a gig singing backup with Josh Groban in front of 18,000 people," she says. "I felt an extreme amount of bliss I’d never felt before! I felt right at home. I felt at peace. It was like this is what I’m meant to do. That was a pivotal point in my life where music changed everything for me.

Although Shana feels no other music reaches the richness of jazz, she considers herself a well-rounded performer capable of singing various styles. Music and singing are part of her nature, something that’s carved into her heart and soul.

Shana says, "The only thing better than singing is more singing."

I believe that the most important in singing is the opportunity to use your voice the way you want and feel in order to express yourself. No matter what style are you singing the vocal technique is fundamental.
My students develop technique, voice strength and vocal range, so they are able to express themselves as artists in various musical styles depending on their personalities.

About Olga
I am very excited to share great news: 2 of my students took Certificate of Merit exam this spring. Both passed with honors. They also did 99% and 100% in their Music Theory tests.

You can see Olga perform role of Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly by Puccini with West Bay Opera (Palo Alto) in May 2016.
Described by critics as "flawless in her singing" (Cultural World Bilingual ), "natural singer with beautiful colors...sings wonderfully, communicating the excesses of passion and emotion, the quick contrasts of mood , with grace and conviction" (San Jose Mercury News); possessing “a pure, strong soprano with phrasing of sumptuous elegance” (San Francisco Chronicle), " dazzling high notes are piercing without being ugly" (San Francisco Classical Voice), "beauty of her voice is outstanding...it has power to set the theater ringing, but it
also has a wealth of color... Her stage presence...is magnetic" (Peninsula Reviews), "Her mezzo tones...evoked memories of Maria Callas' spell-binding rendition" (San Jose Mercury News),
Olga was announced the Best Leading Female Singer in North East in season 2006-2007 by Opera Online.
A native of Russia, she appeared on the stages of the Bolshoi Opera (Maria in Mazeppa, Prilepa in Pique Dame, Brigitta in Iolanta, Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Musetta in La Boheme, to name a few), Kazan Opera Theater (Mimi in La Boheme), Stanislavsky Opera Theater (Micaela in Carmen), and Malmo Opera Theater in Sweden (Musetta) before emigrating to the U.S.A., where she appeared with Hawaii Opera Teater as Mimi in La Boheme, San Francisco Lyric Opera in title role of Aida, West Bay Opera and DiCapo Opera in New York in the title role of Manon Lescaut, Opera San Jose and Illinois Opera Theater as Tosca, and with Cedar Rapids Opera, Gold Coast Opera,Golden Gate Opera and Opera North as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, with San Francisco Opera Merola Program and Tampa Opera as Musetta in La Boheme. Olga appeared with Orchestra Sinfonica Romana at the concert stage of Santa Cecilia in Rome and Washington Center for the Performing Arts in Verdi Requiem, Quatar with Gala concerts, Opera Santa Barbara in an evening of music by Giocomo Puccini, DiCapo Opera (Rachmaninoff’s Francesca da Rimini), in Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Concert Hall for Bach’s Mass in B-minor, at the Grand Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory for Mahler’s Sympony No. 4 and for Orff’s Carmina Burana, Moscow’s Cathedral Catholic Church for Bach’s Easter Oratorio, as a featured soloist for both the Notti Musicali Modenesi Festival and Costa Rica’s XIII Festival de Musica Credomatic; and as a featured soloist for the political-cultural event entitled “Days of Russian Culture in Bulgaria, jointly sponsored by the Russian and Bulgarian Ministries of Culture and attended by the presidents of both countries.

My lessons are a platform for each student to become the best singer they can be, according to their own definition of success. We will sing any genre you love, and work on the quality of your sound and on the authenticity of your interpretation. You will learn voice technique, diction (if language different than English) as well as stage presence, and how to engage your audience to the fullest. Working with me, you can always expect to have a relaxing and fun self-discovery time.

About Giorgia
I started my solo and backup singer career at the age of 12, working for RG Recording Studio (Italy). When I was 15 I founded a children's choir (ages 5 to 15) called Voci di Pace. I trained them as soloists and as an ensemble, as well as conducted them through the professional recording of dozens of CDs. I also trained and conducted students for the recording of highschool musicals.

I began my conservatory bachelor degree training in cello and chamber music in 1997, and graduated 2010. Since then, I have studied singing technique with pop star Silvia Mezzanotte and with opera singers Chiara Fiorani and Noa Frenkel.

I love to teach singing, singing in Italian and Italian diction to students of all ages and backgrounds who are ready to explore their own souls and bodies and to learn how to be themselves through sound and music.

She is able to teach very delicate and complexed topics with genuine irony letting your hair down. I strongly recomend her as a teacher, and I will always thank her for letting me able to apreciate at best music.

Giorgia is amazing! She has an incredible ability to make you feel safe to be vulnerable and open. I was very shy with my voice and Giorgia was the very first person to be able to make me sing in front of another person. She takes you through the basics and explains very constructively how things work. I can recommend her to anyone who is wanting to discover their voice!

I teach a grounded, speech-based technique. I teach voice work as both a physical and spiritual practice, beginning with solid support and resonance, with goal of freeing the natural instrument. Each voice is entirely unique, it is a person’s creative fingerprint. I work with singers to identify their personal voice in the courageous work of learning to sing. I encourage singers to perform in order to share their personal artistic discoveries with an audience.

About Rebecca
I have been teaching voice privately and in the university environment for over 20 years. Currently, I am the only teacher specializing in classical voice at the University of San Francisco, where I also teach music theory, music history, musicianship, and conduct the classical choirs. I am also a the conductor of Sacred and Profane Chamber Chorus in Oakland, CA. I have taught all ages and styles, and specialize in classical art song repertoire, operatic arias, musical theater, and the American song-book.

I hold a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from the University of Iowa in choral conducting (2002), an MA in conducting from UC Santa Cruz (1998), and a BA in voice with recital honors from UC Santa Cruz (1992).
