I started teaching lessons while in music school for Classical Guitar in 1996. From 1998 onwards, I played with a variety of musicians from Africa and Latin America, as well the as great American traditions of gospel, funk, jazz, and bluegrass. All the while, I continued to study music theory and composition, on my own and in private lessons with both well-known players and local professionals. Flamenco and Indian Classical music have also been great interests which I am still involved with.
Though guitar is generally my "go-to" instrument, I often use a MIDI keyboard for composition, and studied/performed on bass for 10 years. The last few years, I have begun to develop my voice as well.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have been playing gigs for years, are very young or old, I have something to offer you!
How we structure lessons depends in part on you and your goals, as well as your learning style. Having taught music for over 15 years, I have a large amount of resources at my disposal, and can either teach from a method book, or a variety of materials, some of which are my own creations.
I also like to use technology as a teaching aid, and can show you how to use your own computer, keyboard, or music production application (garageband, etc) to practice and create music at home. Another thing that I offer is to make recordings of key parts of the lesson, either as an audio or video file, or both. These can be shared with you through email, dropbox, or a flash drive if you bring one along to your lesson.

I love sharing what I've learned with students, and I'm particularly interested in teaching students what they want to work on, but also giving them the tools that they need to hone their facility. I teach from either a traditional standpoint, or from Suzuki books in order to teach technique through Dr. Suzuki's repertoire selections.
I know that playing a stringed instrument is quite challenging, so I do prefer students who are willing to commit to lessons, and a time that we meet each week. Committing to a time aids in students preparation for lessons, as individual
I always hope to open the eyes of my students and teach that confidence, determination and hard work can not only progress them in learning an instrument, but with most skills in life. Most importantly I never want my students to feel that music is a burden! I want them to always enjoy themselves when they are practicing or performing.
I don't provide instruments or the accessories that go along with it, so please be prepared to have those things before our first lesson. I may also provide a list of sheet music to order after our first lesson if I feel we do not have the necessary materials.
I only travel to homes in the city of San Francisco for lessons at least an hour in length. If you live outside of the city in the Bay Area, you are more then welcome to find a time to come to my studio for lessons.
I do not teach beginners online (via Skype), as I believe it is vital to have an instructor in the room in order to make physical adjustments to maintain proper bow hold, posture, and left hand positioning. I'm more than happy to teach intermediate-advanced students online!
My Performance Bio:
Sam is a native born South Dakotan who began his viola studies at the age of ten. He started taking private lessons at the age of fourteen with his teachers Coral White, and Carol Knowles. Eventually, at the age of eighteen, he continued his studies with Kate Weeks in South Dakota.
Sam is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied viola with Jodi Levitz. He worked closely with Mark Sokol and Bettina Mussemeli as chamber music professors, and studied orchestral excerpts with Katie Kadarauch, Don Erlich, Scott Sandmeier and Adam Smyla. He has performed in master classes for David Kim, Helen Callus, Jay Liu, Jonathan Vinocour, Jerzy Kosmala, Hank Dutt, William Goodwin, Jackie Schwandt, and Kelly Hall-Tompkins.
Mr. Sam was the principle violist of the South Dakota All State Orchestra from 2007-2009, principle violist of the J. Laiten Weed Honors Orchestra from 2008-2010, and associate principal of the Black Hills Symphony from 2006-2010. In 2008, he was the 1st prize winner of the Lucy Palermo Weed String Competition, and won South Dakota's ASTA viola division. Two years later, he received the Henry Charles Smith Award in the SDSO's Young Musician's Competition, and also claimed 2nd prize in the BHSO's Young Artist Competition. Sam is also the former principle violist of the San Francisco Youth Orchestra which toured Germany, Austria and Luxembourg in the summer of 2012. Featured performances took place in the concert halls at the Gastieg in Munich, Berlin Philharmonic and at the Rheingau Musik Festival. In 2013-2014, Sam was the principle violist of the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra.
In 2011-2012, he was invited in to the Orlando Chamber Soloists, which is now known as the Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills. In summer of 2015, he joined UFOMT as a violinist and violist performing operas, musicals, orchestral programs, and a chamber music series. Recently, he began performing with the band Evanescence. In summer of 2018, he was invited to join the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a guest artist in a workshop for young composers. He currently works throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as a teacher, soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician.
His dream is to revive interest in Western Art Music so that is once again accessible to every human who is curious. He never wants music to be a burden for his students, and hopes that teaching the benefits of preparation, confidence, focus and determination can inspire his students in all areas of their lives. He loves working with his students on what they are interested in, and aims to enhance them with the technical and musical facility they need in order to play beautifully.

She was born in Florence (Italy), where at the age of nine began studying the harp. Eleonora went on to earn a Bachelors in harp from the Conservatory of music in Florence and a Masters in harp from Conservatory of music in Parma.
From 2011 to 2017 she performed with the Orchestra of the Royal Northern College of Music of Manchester.
For the past ten years Eleonora has been teaching classical and celtic harp to children and adults.
In 2015 Eleonora completed her training to become a certified Music learning theory teacher. This approach focuses on the belief that music is like a language and therefore in order to become fluent children should be immersed in it early on.

Just a few words to introduce my experience, approach and my work ethic .
I have a Bachelors Degree in Music, majoring in piano and voice and an established private teaching practice and teaching studio. I have extensive experience in private piano and vocal tuition and teaching general musicianship, music theory, singing and instrumental teaching in schools, as well as 10 years experience as a vocal performer in the UK.
I am committed to working hard for my students and remaining responsive to their musical tastes and interests. I also work to find out what learning style and senses my students learn most easily with (visual,
kinesthetic, auditory etc.) and adapt my teaching plan to meet the individual needs of each student. I use a variety of creative musical activities and techniques to engender an engaged learn
In teaching piano, I teach rigorous foundational piano technique from the beginning, along with general musicianship. I like to incorporate teaching of general musical concepts, while encouraging creativity and imagination with the younger pupils that I teach. I also incorporate adaptations of popular music that children like to hear and play and try to stay responsive to the musical tastes of the student- while maintaining high standards in technique from beginners to advanced. I also address postural awareness and incorporate elements of the alexander technique into my teaching.
For those interested in singing lessons, I will first and foremost find out what kind of sound you personally wish to produce. Styles vary greatly across different genres. I will then help to diagnose your voice type and what difficulties you may be encountering and which may be preventing you from creating the sound you are aiming for.
I then show you ways in which the voice can be strengthened and balanced across the whole range and help my students achieve a healthy mix of head and chest resonance. This is achieved through exercises and vocal cues, enabling you to recognize the sensations that lead to good use of the voice.

I'd like to pass on the knowledge gained from my years of playing in orchestras, chamber groups and solo concerts. My teachers taught me the most refined techniques of tone production and continually showed me how to make the music come alive emotionally and tell a story.

My own compositional adventures started in the the late 1990's when I started improvising with a DJ mix in a small club. Since then I have experimented a lot with pickups and electric violin. I've created surround sound collages, improvised music for modern dance, and learned digital audio editing skills. I am knowledgable about Pro Tools and Ableton Live. If you are interested in electric violin, looping or using MIDI effects, I can share what I've learned about these things.
You can make music and be creative no matter what playing level you are on. I believe in having fun as you learn, and I stress learning by example and by ear. Reading music is good, too, but often that gets in the way of listening. We will build a foundation step by step and add on elements when you are ready. Also - I can help you be relaxed as you play. I have never had tendonitis or another occupational injury, thanks to good posture and technique. Body awareness is part of the process. Let's have fun- - you can do this!
NOTE: for students age 7 to 12, I require the parent to be present at the lesson and take an active interest in the student's progress. Also, the child must want to play this instrument.

I've always liked learning about music too, and I integrate music theory and history into lessons. Understanding the harmonic structure of a piece can help you learn it more easily, and knowing about the composer and the style can give you insight into how it might be performed. Together they create a richer learning experience.

I'm comfortable primarily teaching beginners, and am very patient and disciplined in my approach to singing. Preferably we'd be doing a series of warmups and vocal exercises prior to actually singing songs, but we'll get there! I have a bedroom in my house with a piano that we would use as our own private "studio," and I can also travel to your desired location if need be!
