Great learning experience

I took flute lessons from Hilary at NYU after several years of not playing at all. I was rusty and had accumulated quite a few bad habits, from poor posture to improper breathing. Starting out, part of my difficulty was in forgetting these habits and starting anew. Not only was Hilary very patient with me, but she also taught useful techniques along the way.

I also had a weak foundation in basic music theory, and Hilary's review lessons were incredibly helpful -- I found myself looking at sheet music and playing scales with a completely different mindset. I can honestly say that I improved significantly (and now I even find myself checking my posture when I'm not playing!). After having taken such a long break, I wasn't sure whether I'd want to start playing again. Hilary's lessons and supportive attitude helped renew my interest and for that I'll always be grateful!

Hilary is an amazing teacher

Hilary is an amazing teacher with a ton of knowledge about flute performance. During my time with her, my playing and musicality improved drastically. She has a lot of flute-playing metaphors up her sleeve that make it easy to understand more complicated techniques.

I would absolutely recommend her as a teacher.

As fun as she is professional!

I took flute lessons with Hilary during my senior year at NYU. I had never played flute before in my life, but I had gotten one as a gift and decided I might as well try and learn. I was very lucky to have chosen Hilary as my teacher!

I had taken music lessons in varying instruments every single semester while at NYU, and Hilary was easily the most memorable and enjoyable teacher I had. While most of my music teachers made our lessons seem like another class, Hilary's passion, excitement, and humor made learning the flute a fun adventure that I looked forward to each week.

In our first lesson, she was able to show me exercises and techniques that got me further in my flute playing than months of trying to teach myself online. In just a few weeks, I knew more than I was expecting to by the end of the whole semester, and I was rewarded by being able to play short but beautiful flute music.

If there was ever a time when I was having trouble with a particular concept or technique, Hilary was always able to either clarify it for me, or explain it in an alternate way until I got it. If I ever had any questions - and I had a lot of them - she was always able to answer them.

I not only learned a lot about the flute, but I had fun while doing it, which for me is the best way to learn an instrument. If you are considering taking flute lessons, I highly recommend you take them with Hilary!
Carla U. Somerset, NJ

About Carla

Music is my LIFE! After 24 years of teaching at music camps, music stores, 3 colleges and my home, I completely understand that the lessons are all about YOU, the student: what you want to learn, taught to you in a way that works for your brain and personality. And if you don't know exactly what you want to learn, that's OK. We can figure that out together as we go along learning the basics. I help students learn to play songs by artists they like. I also help students write songs, or put chords to their existing lyrics. For those who are interested, I teach note-reading (not required) and theory (not required) and ear training (not required). The lessons are always tailored towards your (the student's) goals. I also teach classical and fingerstyle guitar for the ...

It has been great having Carla as my guitar teacher. Although I have taken lessons from two other teachers, I have found Carla's teaching methodology to be the best as she teaches you those most important basics that sometimes get passed over by other teachers.
As I am an adult student, life sometimes gets in the way of my practicing, but Carla is understanding of this and consistently provides that ever important encouragement and positive reinforcement for whatever progress I have made.
Aside from her musical talents, Carla is very personable, down to earth, with an excellent sense of humor that she incorporates in her teaching style.
I highly recommend Carla as a teacher.

I have been taking lessons with Jimmy for 3 months now and have learned so much in that time. I was excited to learn the acoustic guitar, but a bit nervous since I have never taken any type of musical lesson or have ever had any success with learning an instrument. Jimmy's patience and fun personality put me at ease right away. I am an elementary teacher of over 20 years, so I could tell that I had made the right choice in coming to Jimmy for lessons. Jimmy takes the time to teach music theory, which I appreciate, and answers any questions that have. He is a very dedicated musician whose experience and knowledge become apparent as he teaches his students, and when you view his studio. He is very reliable, always getting back to me quickly when I correspond with him. If I have had to change lesson days due to weather or family commitments, he is always understanding and flexible. I highly recommend him to other perspective students and look forward to growing as a musician with him as my teacher!

How to Play the Violin Like Lindsey Stirling
The inimitable Lindsey Stirling has shaken the world’s concept of classical music. From sold-out shows around the globe to her top-ranked YouTube video for "Crystallize," she’s come a long way since being eliminated in the quarter-finals of “America’s Got Talent” in 2010. While Lindsey has experienced a meteoric rise in the music world, her success is rooted in the same principles that have guided countless artists to virtuoso status: training with a classical instructor merged with contemporary
Age or Aptitude: When to Start Violin Lessons

Like any other form of art, there’s simply no black or white when it comes to exploring music. The right time to start can’t be measured exclusively by age. Some ambitious parents start their kids at the age of two, and while many go off to become YouTube sensations, a whole lot more tend to give up by the age of five. So what should you consider before diving
How to Read Guitar Chords
