About Dena

Dena Murray’s performance career has included musical theatre productions, television and motion picture work, and singing for radio commercials. Specializing in vocal coaching and technique for over 25 years, her passion has been to help singers to achieve their dreams. Dena teaches privately in home and online, working with both beginning and professional singers worldwide. Additionally, she is Patron for The Voice College and contracted to work internationally online as a master teacher and coach. She is also a key Subject Matter Expert for The Modern Vocalist, a large and growing website serving the needs of vocalists internationally.

In 1994, she joined the teaching staff at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. From 1996-2006, Dena coordinated the technique taught by all of the vocal instructors and wrote the curriculum for t

hat department. Some of her students have included Sarah Hudson, Holly Valentine (Hyper Crush), Michael Salerno (Gemini Syndrome), Jon Hensley, Lauren Adams, Adeline Mocke, Alitsiya, demo-and-session artists, as well as voice talent from CBS, NBC, HBO, motion picture films, and television.

Dena’s first book, “Vocal Technique: A Guide to Finding Your Real Voice” (Hal Leonard Publications, 2002), features an introduction to the vocal mechanism and why it might be necessary to separate the head and chest registers before bridging the voice. Her second book, co-authored by Tita Hutchison, “Advanced Vocal Technique: Middle Voice, Placement, and Styles” (Hal Leonard Publications, 2008) describes a unique method for proper mask placement through every physical sensation, and how to practically apply it to all styles of singing. Her last book, “Vocal Strength & Power: Boost Your Singing with Proper Technique and Breathing” (Hal Leonard Publications, 2009) is a culmination of all of her years coaching and teaching vocal technique to singers that contains little known secrets behind the art of breath technique for a much more powerful one-register sound, and how to keep the throat open while singing.

Dena graduated from Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, with a Bachelor of Science in Speech.

About ryan

Hi, my name is Ryan and I would love to teach you how to play guitar. I've been playing for over 10 years and have been gigging for a little less than that in my band. Over the years I have gained a lot of experience performing on stage and teaching to people of all ages. If you want to shred, jam, or rock out then look no further. I okay all styles of music and pride myself in building a fun and educational curriculum based solely on you or others who have had similar interests as you. This means if you have a question about guitar or music in general, 9 times out of 10 I can answer it. The remaining tenth is either a well kept secret, or something that is left to be found. So if you're ready to start your journey or just need a guide to help you on your way, let's go!

Ryan was great! He's obviously a talented guitarist and he is very laid back and makes you feel comfortable. He shows you in detail what you need to do to become a better guitar player. My ONLY advice, and the reason he doesn't get 5 stars, is I think he should have more visual aids with his lessons. For example, write down the different scales or transcribe the first several measures of a song. Then, one has something to refer back to when you are practicing and invariably get stuck. Other than that, I would highly recommend Ryan as a guitar teacher!

She encourages, she finds analogies to explain, she is more patient with me then I am with myself. She also explains the terms, gives tips on how to read the notes. She is able to identify the mistakes and give the right advice on how to improve. Her advice on how to practice made all the difference for me. I started with a giant cookie bite sized embouchure and within a few lessons I have managed to make it smaller thanks to her instructions. There is hope for me afterall.
Looking forward to playing a duet with her without me making a mess. Thank you Amanda!

Amanda is an outstanding teacher. She inspires and challenges me to play pieces I did not think I could play. She is able to take difficult passages and break them down step my step so I can learn how to play them properly. I am sure I would not be playing as I am now, if it weren’t for Amanda’s skilled teaching. She is also friendly, makes the lessons interesting and fun and is very professional. I have taken lessons both in person and on Skype and she excels in both modes.

About Jil

HI! I love teaching and I have many different areas of expertise. I am happy to teach combined lessons- Ableton mixed with synthesis, piano and accordion? Whatever your needs are, I am happy to find a way to teach you what you need to learn!

I take time as a teacher to get to know my students and the way that they learn. Everyone is different. The most important aspect of having a teacher is being able to learn from them.

PIANO- I studied for a long time with German Diez. (his principal teacher was Claudio Arrau) I have found a way to integrate the piano technique I learned from him into an engaging process of learning the piano- this is NOT limited to classical music.

ABLETON- I have used Ableton as a DJ, to create live dance music, as a device to perform as a multi-instrumentalist. I have used it to score a theater piece whic

h was triggered in real time. I use it to record- from a compositional tool to feature length soundtracks.

ACCORDION- I have been playing accordion since 2005. What drew me to that instrument, as a pianist, was the portability and being able to crescendo on one note. If you play piano and are interested in this instrument, the crossover takes a couple of weeks but, the results are immediate. If this is your first instrument, you will have a BLAST learning it!

COMPOSITION- I am trained (via Bard College, Joan Tower) as a "classical composer". Meaning, I write the notes on the page. However, it is 2019 and there are many ways to write music. In my career as a composer, I dedicate my life to exploring all the ways that one can be defined as a composer. I am more than happy to share my experience with you as a mentor to your creations. I will never tell you what to write- I will offer suggestions and be a vehicle to help you realize your music. Sometimes it takes a support system to "find one's voice". I am especially sensitive to people who are shy and/or late bloomers.

SYNTHESIS- Did you just get a new synth and can't figure out how to get it to make a sound? :) I am here. As a musician- whether seasoned or not, if you don't understand the basics of synthesis you are literally missing out on a WHOLE sonic universe.

Jil Christensen is a superhuman who comes down to Earth on occasion to help us mere mortals become better musicians. Having pushed Ableton to its limits, she is able to troubleshoot almost any issue a budding producer/composer will come up with and has a seemingly endless bag of tricks to help the student explore different possibilities for a composition. At the same time, she is able to break down the most basic concepts to get the beginner started (I didn't know what an oscillator was at my first lesson, nor had I ever used Ableton or any other DAW). In addition to being an expert in Ableton, Jil has extensive knowledge of synthesizers and other equipment both for the studio and live music production. Jil also has an encyclopedic knowledge of modern compositional techniques and years of experience implementing them. She is sure to take your music production and composition skills to the next several levels. Highly recommended!

"Not only do we love the convenience of online lessons, but we also love our instructor, Blake! Besides his patience and enthusiasm for my 9yo son, who is
learning to play the drums with Blake, his communication and flexibility are second to none, which is very important to this busy homeschooling mom. I wondered how effective online lessons would be, and it's been fabulous. Blake and my son hook up with Skype, so they can see each other, talk and form a relationship, making the instructions all the more effective. I highly recommend takelessons.com and of course, Blake. :)"

"Jessica is a very good and kind instructor. Perfect for my 12-year-old who has a sensitive heart when being corrected by others. She is patient and takes
the time to come up with creative solutions when something isn't working as it should. As a parent, I appreciate the detailed notes she sends me letting me what happened in the lesson and what she'd like done during practice time. She also provides links to additional instruction videos if she feels like her explanation isn't making sense. I feel like she really goes beyond and wants to help them learn, not just assign practice pieces. Thanks, Jessica! - so glad we found you!"
