Mikaela helped ramp my daughter from having no clarinet experience to being a fairly proficient player ready for the school band, in less than a school year. Mikaela is friendly, points out little things that help make big improvements in my daughter's playing, and keeps checking on the basics as well (embouchure, finger positioning, etc). Mikaela has been very flexible and has a good teaching manner and attitude which has made my daughter's clarinet learning experience a very positive one. We look forward to continuing to work with Mikaela!

Music is an extremely multifaceted skill and every student learns in a completely different way. Some students will gravitate towards certain aspects of music more then others. For me, it is all about favoring these aspects in order for the student to get the most creative and intellectual growth. I am a well-versed professional musician and have experience in many genres from classical to more popular styles. I teach strong foundations in note reading, music theory, ear training, sight reading, technique, improvisation and more. Clarinet is my primary instrument. I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

Beginner to intermediate level; also performance prep for advanced level

About Darrell
Why these lessons are different:
- Formally trained conductor/composer/producer
- Individual or group session options including full band production
- A long roster of satisfied clients
- Broad base of musical styles (rock, classical, jazz, blues, metal, bluegrass, theater, big band, symphonic, pop, punk, country, march, gospel, avant-garde...)
- Over 20 yrs teaching experience and work with recognized professionals including work in some of the top-rated private schools in the United States

Instrument-specific instruction:
- Voice
- Guitar [Spanish, acoustic, electric]
- Electric Bass
- Piano/Keyboard
- Woodwinds [specializing in saxophones]
- Percussion
- Brass & Bowed Strings [performance preparation only]

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal har
mony, shares the basic tenets of the Suzuki method, and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Whatever level they are at when I start with them, I guide their efforts into bringing the students up to a certain level of comprehension regarding the mathematical aspects of music and how it relates to their instruments. This understanding of theoretical principles of sound allows the students to play any style of music they wish, no matter how their tastes may change throughout their lives.

yesterday was my first vocal lesson with Darrell. he is definitely one cool dude. My first impression is that he is very thorough. I like that we are starting from the ground up learning fundamentals. it is noteworthy that I am blind. I only say this because from the get-go he was open minded to adapt the session where we needed. I look forward to my upcoming lessons.

I was amazed at how much Darrell knew and was able to impart in just 45 minutes. He assessed my level in less than 5 minutes, then used every second to incorporate and expand what I already knew into organized concepts It seemed like a staggering amount of information, yet I never felt rushed or overwhelmed. I'm really looking forward to next week!

Clarinet is my primary instrument of study at Penn State University. I am a member of the top band and orchestra, several chamber ensembles, and have been a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band for the past two years. I have nothing but praise for Brooke as an instructor. My son was a 10-yr old novice when he began his piano lessons with Brooke. She was engaging and incredibly patient as he played his way through almost 3 years as her student, from the beginning stages of learning to read music to practicing scales to becoming recital-ready. Although he has since moved on to study viola, the foundation he received through Brooke's instruction set the stage for a life long appreciation of music. Brooke's impressive musical talent, in combination with her ability to share her knowledge and love of music through teaching, puts her in a unique position to address the musical needs of a continuum of students from beginner to expert. She not only instructs, she shares her joy - and she is, indeed, a rare gem!

Brooke is classically trained & highly knowledgeable in all aspects of music & theory. She also is an excellent performer. I also play professionally & it is my view that the best instructors are those who apply their art. Her outgoing & pleasant upbeat personality make her an enjoyable & patient teacher.
