In this lesson, Michael will teach you how to play the simple song "Hot Cross Buns." This is a great first song for someone who has just played their first notes on the instrument. We only deal with the notes E, D, and C, which Michael will demonstrate. 

You will also learn how to properly tongue on the clarinet. Remember to take good breaths, cover the holes completely, and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

I have been performing and teaching music professionally for 10 years in a variety of settings. I received my bachelor's degree in music education and jazz studies from Western Michigan University and my master's in jazz studies from Temple University in Philadelphia. 

My passion is jazz saxophone, and I have also played flute and clarinet in classical ensembles and theatre productions like West Side Story, Footloose and Shrek the Musical. I compose and arrange music for my own bands, and I have played pop/rock concerts as well. I am confident that I am prepared to guide you toward any style of music you could want to learn. I always gear lessons toward the individual student's goals and interests! Clarinet can fit into almost any musical setting. Classical, pop, theatre, jazz, and more!

Michael had a well thought out lesson plan for the first day and my daughter learned something right away and she felt really encouraged to keep moving forward with flute.

Our 6th grade son has been taking virtual saxophone lessons with Michael and he is absolutely fantastic! We love Michael's dedication, kindness, and gifted talents as both a musician and educator.

Mr. Hudson-Casanova is a great teacher with a lot of experience.  Ask a question, and he'll answer or guide you in the right direction to explore your topic of inquiry in an easy manner.  He has helped me grow and improve as a saxophone player, and more so as a musician overall, through studies with various exercises like long tones, articulations, scales and progressions, and improvising on various jazz standards.  He has helped me discover new techniques and helped me to learn to incorporate them into my playing.  No matter your ability, Mr. HC can help you grow and learn!

Michael has dramatically improved my ability to play the saxophone and understand Western music theory. Over the year of taking lessons with Michael, he's taught me the foundations of saxophone: scales, long tones, and playing by ear, all the while sharing his contagious love for music and being extremely patient (my saxophone was broken and squeaky for our first three months of lessons, haha). He's generously created and provided custom sheet music exercises, duet recordings, and jazz playlists to inspire me. All in all, Michael is giving me an expert and friendly education.

Michael has worked with my daughter throughout high school and is such a talented teacher and musician. More recently they have been learning jazz as well classical (my daughters request, which Michael always encourages) and she has had so much fun with it.
