Dr. Carl S. maintains an online and in-person music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano. Carl teaches Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member. During Spring 2019, Carl is teaching Music Theory and Saxophone at Oklahoma State University.

Carl taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical in Fall 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included direct
ing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles I-II, Jazz Combo, Jazz Improvisation lessons, Jazz Pedagogy, online Jazz Appreciation, private saxophone lessons, saxophone quartets, private oboe lessons, and group guitar class.

Carl completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Carl's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

Carl enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Carl performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

I've been teaching clarinet for 20 years and my students have gone on to the State level Band Auditions and won multiple times. Established in 1996.

For the past twenty years, Dimitry has been teaching students of all ages to play the clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, and recorder.

Students will learn proper techniques, posture, breathing, phrasing, articulation, tone, rhythm, sight reading, solfeggio, music theory, and music history. They will also learn to play solos (with and without accompaniment), as well as duets (along with the instructor).

Private lessons are customized to meet each student's goals, such as preparation for regional and state band auditions, concerts, and other music competitions.

Our 12-year old son has been learning clarinet from Mr. Dimitry for about a year now and we highly recommend him to prospective students for his deep music knowledge, rich clarinet performance experience and above all, just being a great clarinet teacher.

In a year's time with Mr. Dimitry, our son's progress has been very impressive. After our son started lessons with Mr. Dimitry, it quickly became apparent that Mr. Dimitry is a very experienced teacher for young musicians. He engages our son effectively to keep him interested in music and clarinet while at the same time sets high expectations for him. Our son always looks forward to clarinet lessons and also is motivated to practice pieces at home.

Mr. Dimitry not only teaches sound clarinet skills, but also emphasizes the importance of playing music the right way, that is to tell stories and express feelings through music rather than to play music like a technician. Although it is difficult for a young musician to fully appreciate this concept, it does go a long way in preparing him to become a really good musician in the long run.

Mr. Dimitry is very polite, pleasant and professional. We recommend him without any reservation.

My 7 year old son has been taking recorder lessons from Dimitry for almost 1 year now. Dimitry is very patient, encouraging, and enganging - considering that my son is on the younger side. Dimitry provides music instruction that is appropriate age and level wise, so my son feels accomplished and challenged at the same time.
We plan to continue with Dimitry and hopefully advance to the clarinet once his fingers can cover the clarinet holes and he has learned more music theory. My son looks forward to his music lessons. We are very pleased with his musical instruction.

Incredibly amiable, professional, and talented as a teacher.

As a senior in high school now graduating and transferring into college, I started my lessons with Dimitry in December last year and had to end this summer at the end of the music school's program. Even though my time learning the saxophone was short, Dimitry used my past musical experience to help guide me through the instrument. His lessons did not feel long in any sense of the word, and in fact some two-hour lessons I took to make up missed weeks blew by, as I was constantly engaged by his teachings. During my studies with him I found myself in the presence of a true musician, and this was only further driven home when I saw him play in the Hanover Wind Symphony at the Morristown Community Theater with Stanley Drucker. I would highly recommend Dimitry as an instructor for a student at any level.

I've been playing clarinet since age 10 and teaching it since age 15. My performance experience is extensive and I achieved the highest honors available to me throughout my high school and college years. I help students to produce a decent sound very early, and I LOVE to teach clarinet!

Standard method book or band book is used until the intermediate level. From there, standard classical repertoire is the primary method of teaching, supplemented with advanced method books and etude books. Students of other woodwinds looking to "double" on clarinet will benefit from my real-world experience in doubling.

I have been teaching music students since my high school years in the late 1990s. Although I am primarily a high-level clarinetist, I have developed strong piano skills and can "double" on several other woodwinds. My primary clarinet/woodwind teacher at university was Alex Fields, who studied with renowned woodwind pedagogue and method writer Himie Voxman. I consider myself a "second-generation" Voxman student! Mr. Fields' influence pervades my teaching style, as he was a master of using creative methods to gain the desired effect. The university I attended is known for
its high-quality music degree programs. Over my 20+ years of performance experience, I've played in a huge variety of situations; from unaccompanied soloist to piano accompanist to church praise band to full orchestra and community band. This has given me an integrated understanding and appreciation for various styles and types of music.

I am known among my students for my patience, flexibility, and ability to individualize my style. I teach primarily from a traditional classical background and take students in the direction of the genre(s) they want to pursue. I teach all of my students, and particularly my pianists, about chords to give them the resources to read lead sheets and improvise at more advanced levels. I try to combine the best elements of different styles to build versatile musicians who are intrigued rather than intimidated by new concepts. Everyone gets sight reading and ear training instruction. I incorporate technology, such as mobile apps, to help students master concepts. I lay these foundations early, tailoring my methods to each student's unique learning style and goals. I teach to help each student reach their own potential, to better themselves, to give back to their communities, and to appreciate and enjoy music for the rest of their lives. Music instruction is proven to sharpen the mind for all ages, and is especially beneficial to those with cognitive issues. I worked in healthcare for many years, and this experience makes its way into my teaching style as well.

Safety: I request that another person be somewhere in the home during lessons for all children under 18 and for all male students.

Practice: I expect students to practice regularly and I teach them how to practice well! With younger students I use a record-keeping system encouraging 5 weekly practice sessions of a length proportional to attention span.

My 8-year-old son, John, had Rosanna for a few weeks over the summer and he said he learned a lot from her. She paid attention and had no trouble keeping our active son's focus on the lesson and I have to say its no easy task to keep him interested! I would highly recommend Rosanna as a piano teacher!

I have been singing my entire life and teaching since I was 18. I am very passionate about private instruction, as I have personally found the most success through this method of learning music.

When I am not working, I can be found singing in my church choir, playing saxophone and/or bassoon in our Sunday School Orchestra, singing and playing bass in a 5 piece classic rock band, and spending time with my husband and our families and friends.

I will do my best to provide as much of the music as possible, as I know that can be a huge added expense to private lessons, but there may be a couple of books or sheet music that you will need to purchase personally. I miss Amber's piano lessons, which I discontinued only because our schedules no longer meshed. She made learning fun, gave me helpful memory tricks, and accommodated my needs as a beginning student, even though I am an adult. I was satisfied with my progress and long to take more lessons. Being able to play even simple pieces gave me great joy and added another dimension to my life. She has my recommendation.

Through the foundation I've gained by the influences of Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and Suzuki musical instruction methods, I compile my own teaching materials. Using personally constructed guitar lessons, I demonstrate, instruct, and guide the student based on my assessment of their individual needs, skill level, and progress. Lessons are formulated in Modules, and advancement through them is based on the student's personal aptitude, skill level, and practice commitment. Learning is accomplished by ear as well as through essential methods of musical notation (tablature, 5-line staff, rhythmic comprehension). Students are trained to perform written music as well as to write and express the music within themselves.
I'm an encouraging and motivating guitar teacher with a casual relaxed approach. Teaching new guitarists is very rewarding to me. To see the light come on and watch a student perform a song, express themselves musically, and create their own composition is an awesome experience.

I started with Scott as a newbie and he has definitely helped me grow as a guitarist. He takes time and makes things easier to learn. As complicated learning can be, he simplifies it and breaks it down. When I feel like I’m not progressing he always shows me how I am. His modules are easy to follow. His teaching style is compatible with all types of learners whether you are visual, hands on or a listener. It’s not just business with him. He’s always available for questions after or between lessons. He’s knowledgeable in equipment so don’t hesitate to ask for some advice on what to buy. He’s affordable and lesson times are flexible. I highly recommend him for all ages and learning needs.

Assigning method books and mindless etudes to practice doesn't have nearly the same effect asking them "Ok, what kind of music do YOU like? What do you want to PLAY? What do you want to LEARN?".

I believe that students learn best when they are invested in a subject, and the best way to get them invested is to individually get to know each one, speak to them on their level, and get them playing music they're interested in.

About Jon
I'm a professional performer, educator, and recording artist. I received my Masters in Music from New Mexico State University, and my BA and BMA from the College of Wooster in Ohio.

Students can expect to improve their technique and performing repertoire within a matter of weeks. We will collaborate to find music that he or she is interested in, plus work on exercises that will build technique and sound quality. It doesn’t matter WHAT you’re playing, but HOW you play it.

I’ve been a musician for over 20 years and played in a wide variety of settings. In lessons, I’ll draw from that experience to help students achieve their musical goals.

As a performing artist, I’ve played in classic big bands, small jazz combos, and R&B style horn sections, just to name a few. I’m passionate about classical music, jazz, R&B, and funk, but good
technique is good technique, and a proficient musician should and can jump from one style to another with ease.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger, freshly transplanted to Brooklyn after seven great years in Boston, Massachusetts. My professional experience on saxophone, keyboards, clarinet, flute, and bass in many different musical styles has offered me a wide-ranging palate to teach from. My daughter enjoyed learning clarinet with Tyler. As another reviewer has noted, Tyler is a gentle and patient teacher. My daughter could be difficult during lessons and often got distracted, and Tyler was great at steering her back on track and engaging her through new music and exercises.

Tyler was the piano teacher for our two daughters for almost 5 years. They were piano beginners aged 4 and 6 when we started. My daughters are more on the shy side, and Tyler ended up being the perfect teacher for them. He is gentle and patient but at the same time got them excited about learning the instrument and playing music of different genres. My daughters enjoyed the lessons very much and they were sad to see Tyler leave for New York. I can highly recommend Tyler as a teacher especially for shy beginners like my daughters were.
