I have been playing the flute since I was in high school. I have performed with flute choirs in high school and college. I have also played the flute in a community wind ensemble. I can work with beginner and intermediate students.

I have a Master's in Music Technology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a Bachelor's in Music (Technology and Recording) from the University of Indianapolis.
I started on the piano when I was in elementary school. I began playing the clarinet, my primary instrument, in 6th grade. I then started playing the saxophone in 8th grade and started playing the flute in high school.
I have performed on all of these instruments in various types of concerts and have taught lessons for the past five years.

Hello there! Do you or your loved ones have an interest in music? So do I! That is why I am here to teach and share my own passion for music. I love working with children and have two boys of my own. I love teaching music and instil passion for learning into every one of my students.

Having grown up in a musical family with my mother a professional violinist, I have been exposed to the joys of music since childhood. I learned how to play Suzuki piano at the age of three, and later percussion and string instruments from when I was six years old. In high school I joined the band playing flute. I loved playing flute and piccolo so much that I decided to take this as my career and went to Interlochen Arts Academy where I excelled in my performance. I later went to Prague Conservatory and Czech Budweiss Conservatory and played with the
Prague Film Orchestra. Even more recently I have been a teacher for the Flutes and Strings classes at Unison World School in Dehradun, India.

I have enjoyed having a very successful studio here in Tampa, and hope to enrich your life with music soon!

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. For students who wish to excel in their school band, a more practical approach with technique specific warm-ups and exercises seems to be the best in general.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room which includes music stands, sheet music, whiteboard, video recording equipment and microphone, and seating for parents/students. No pets. Parking in driveway. Siblings are welcome.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide metronome, and tools for minor instrument repair. Students should provide their own music stands and sheet music.

My son has been taking violin lessons with Hallie for almost one year. He started just after he turned 4. My concern when he started was that he was too young but Hallie has obviously taught kids his age before and knows what she is doing. She is creative in order to keep a four year old interested and engaged. She is also warm and positive. Most importantly, he's really learning how to play and about music in general - it is a wonderful feeling when he makes strides and does something that seemed so out-of-reach before.

Scale work and technical drills are made fun through games and other means to keep things interesting :)

I received a Bachelor's in Music Education and Performance from Drake University in Flute and Piano. Currently pursuing a Master's in Music Therapy.

At Drake, I received a musical scholarship covering 80% of my tuition costs.
I was also honored to sit as Principal Flute in both the Drake Symphony Orchestra and the Drake Wind Symphony, the top performing groups at the University.

I started to play the flute and piano in second grade, and
my love and passion for music have only grown and matured since then.

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

About Sheila
Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

I believe that technique serves musicianship and that it is important the student feels he or she gets to make music in every lesson and in every practice session. Every technical exercise should have a direct musical application, and every single lesson should be tailored to the student’s needs. Although not every student will want to become a professional flutist, my goal is to get every student to enjoy the process of working toward his or her greatest potential.

Through his involvement with these groups Cole has been heard in concert halls across the U.S. and Europe in masterclass settings, competitions, music festival residencies, chamber series, and guest artist recitals. Regarding his recent Carnegie Hall debut Cole has been described as "a splendid performer who brings wonderful spirit and life to my music" by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Charles Wuorinen and by Curtis Institute composer David Ludwig as "at once sensitive, nuanced, brash, and daring: all depending on the demands of the music." 

As an undergra
duate, Cole traveled with the Aeolus Saxophone Quartet to perform world premieres of Jens Marggraf's Three Dances in Germany and Poland as guest artists. Since then, they have continued to perform around Florida, Georgia, and recently performed a guest artist recital at Harford College in Aberdeen, Maryland.  Anderson-Himmelspach in currently writing a concerto for the Duo.

Singularity performed first for the International Ligeti Festival and Symposium in 2013 where they collaborated with Lukas Ligeti on his quartet Frozen State of Song. Since then they have performed for Michael Maccaferri, clarinetist for the three time Grammy winning sextet eighth blackbird, who praised them for their "...unfaltering rhythmic precision and razor sharp ensemble playing with a sensitive and thoughtful interpretation of the score..." in regard  to their championing of Pulitzer Prize winning composer Charles Wuorinen's Quartet. Singularity made their Carnegie Hall debut in May of 2015.

Cole is a D'Addario Performing Artist and uses Reserve Classic Reeds, exclusively.

Lessons with Cole helped me grow not only as a saxophonist, but as a musician and person as well. He was my lessons TA for a year at Florida State University. Very patient and willing to work with his students, yet he knows when you are putting in an honest effort and when you are not. In our time together at FSU he demonstrated a wide array of knowledge and ability on the saxophone and music, including many discussions about music history, different musical styles, and transfers we can make from other instruments. If you work hard, and are honest with both Cole and yourself, you will find yourself learning a great deal and making a great friend along the way. I would recommend lessons from him to anyone.

I took lessons from Cole during my siohmore year in college. Within just a few months he had identified and corrected 3 major problems in my playing that no other teacher had noticed. Many of my friends have taken lessons with Cole as well and no one has had a bad experience.
As a teacher Cole was never late and always made me comfortable asking questions. Cole can also explain abstract, difficult to grasp concepts like no other teacher I've had before.

Cole Belt was my saxophone teacher during my first year at the Florida State University, and he had a huge impact on my approach to musicianship, both as a musician and as a human being. He helped me to realize my long and short term goals as a musician and guided me to achieving my utmost potential during my time as his student. His meditative and methodical approach to teaching and instrumental music-making is comprehensive and simplistic in nature, and he was always able to provide critical advice and various perspectives when I learning to establish my own musical concepts of phrasing, etc. I experienced growth during every lesson due to his preparation and knowledge of the instrument. But, most importantly, he was clear in his direction, and patiently provided multiple approaches to the same concept when I was having trouble understanding. He challenged me to expect more out of myself, and I am very thankful for the incredible foundation he helped me to establish during my first year as a undergraduate music student. I have seen him lead masterclasses with musicians of all ages, and he would be a lovely teacher to any woodwind student, at any level of development.

My mantra for every lesson is to teach a student how to 'be their own teacher'. A big bulk of the magic happens outside of the lesson so it is my goal and hope to provide various practice techniques and skills for a student to have in their tool belt when we aren't together.

At the end of the day we are all teachers, whether it be to ourselves or to others. When practicing solo, a student needs to be able to tap into critical thinking and ask themselves the right questions that will help them to solve a problem.

A private teacher is there to support that process, provide insight from their own experiences, and aid the student in developing that skill.
Because every student learns differently, I personalize lessons to the specific needs of each student and incorporate a wide range of influences from classical to modern/pop music.

Salutations people of TakeLessons! My name is Monika and I am a flutist, lead West African drummer, and a writer/poet.

Flute-wise, I have been playing for 12 years and teaching for a little over 7 of them. As well as teaching privately, I have organized and run rehearsals for flute choirs. I'm a big fan of auxiliary flutes!
Along with classical music, I am a huge lover of world music (more on that below) and like to incorporate Latin jazz, modern, contemporary, and pop/radio music into my teaching. It is so important to get well-rounded exposure in music and if you love other genres, it's an added bonus!

As a lead West African drummer, I have been studying the art form for 5 years. My focus has been on music from the country of Ghana, and specifically the Ewe people. This is not just a focus on drumming but on song and dance as wel
l - it's a marvelous trifecta. I have taught workshops in all kinds of settings with as many as 80 students at once! From summer programs, teacher professional development days, to in- or after-school activities, there is always fun to be had! While this style of music is best suited for a group of people, there is nothing stopping us learning the drumming techniques and lead drum parts privately.

In addition to my musical life, I am also a writer and poet. As a child to two immigrant parents from Poland, I grew up learning how to teach English, and in turn fell in love with the creative writing process.
A lot of my inspiration comes from my constant reading, musical adventures, and particularly my time in nature as a hiker.

About Nicole
Nicole Frazee, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, began playing the flute at age thirteen. At a young age, Frazee showed great promise as a musician and was piccolo/third flute of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony under the direction of John Varineau, Associate Conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony. She received her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance in 2009 from Grand Valley State University, where she studied under Judith Kemph (flute/piccolo of the Grand Rapids Symphony) and Nancy Stagnitta. Her freshman year she was winner of the chamber orchestra concerto competition, and later a winner of the upper division scholarship competition, symphony orchestra scholarship and symphonic wind ensemble scholarship. During her years at Grand Valley, Frazee was very involved in the performing ensembles. She was principle flute of the symp
honic wind ensemble, piccolo/third flute of the symphony orchestra, and piccolo/third flute of the pit orchestra. She was also principle flute and piccolo of the GVSU New Music Ensemble, under the direction of distinguished composer Bill Ryan. In 2009, Frazee was one of four students from the New Music Ensemble invited to perform In C at Carnegie Hall with Terry Riley, the Kronos Quartet, and other new music all-stars in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the work. The same year, Frazee was a performer with the New Music Ensemble on their CD, In C: Remixed, recorded by River City Studios. In C: Remixed was nominated for a Grammy, and referred to by Terry Riley as “...one of the best performances of In C ever...” The Washington Post, Time Out Chicago and All About Jazz named In C:Remixed as one of the top ten classical releases of 2009.
Frazee earned her Master of Music degree in 2011 from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, where she studied with Dr. Christine Gustafson and received a tuition scholarship and graduate flute assistantship. While at East Carolina, Frazee was principle flute of the symphony orchestra and symphonic wind ensemble, third flute/piccolo of the pit orchestra, and was a student member of the ECU Faculty’s Eastern Symphony Orchestra.
Frazee is both an active performer and teacher. She has attended many master classes throughout the United States and Canada and has had the opportunity to work with such flutists as Carol Wincenc, Nicholas Duchamp, Regina Helcher Yost, Nina Assimakopolous, Valerie Coleman, Denis Bluteau and world-renowned violinist, Dylana Jenson.
