About Nick
I am a 28 year old, energetic teacher of almost any instrument, with my main instrument being trumpet. I have my masters in jazz studies from UNT and have been teaching since 2008! As a performing musician in the DFW area my goal is to help students understand how music works, develop great practice techniques, and create a hobby or profession that will last a lifetime.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson is an hour long consisting of several different parts to help students to understand music from several different view points.
- First we engage in some guided listening to broaden our perspective of music and learn about the history of music.
- Second we work on fundamentals that help us to play music. This is like learning the alphabet before you learn to spell. We don't skimp on this part!
- Third we work our mind from a the
oretical approach to understand the math behind how music works.
- Finally we spend the last third of the lesson applying all of this knowledge to a solo, song, or lesson book.

*** Equipment ***
Students should have a stand and their instrument for our first lesson. After the first lesson we will pick a book, song, or solo based on your level.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz Improvisation/Performance
Classical Materials
Beginners
Theory
Solo Preparation
Audition Prep.

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning clarinet lessons.

About Thomas
No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Yes, I'm trying to get you to sign up for lessons, and yes I sincerely mean that. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alongside a song you
love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Maybe you want to sound like [insert piano player here]. Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Music lasts a lifetime. I know that’s a terrible cliché, but it’s true, and few other skills can claim that. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it, and like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer you do it, the faster you get… or something like that. There’s a legitimate analogy in there somewhere.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

There are many ways to cultivate your musical skill whether it's visual, kinesthetic, or auditory. Let's find out which way works best for you!

Most schools do not offer the flexibility in learning styles necessary for you to find your ideal way of processing new information, whether it be visual, auditorial, kinesthetic, memetic, right brain/left brain, etc.

That's why I'm here! I pride myself on working with each individual student on the subtle ways that they learn and form healthy habits. If you have any questions about my teaching styles or methods please ask!

A little more about me:

I have over 10 years of guitar experience, studying under Jazz heavyweights Corey Christiansen, Oteil Burbridge, and Dan Miller. I pride myself in putting my students needs and wants above all else. I wish to impart a love for music onto my students that can only be cultivated by the bond a teacher and their student share, let us learn and grow together!

About Grant
Hello!

My name is Grant and I’ve been helping students grow for almost 10 years now! How time flies! I started playing music at the age of 9 and have been in love with it ever since, staying active in my local music scene as an instructor, performer, manager, and booking agent. I have also earned a degree in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University for all of the students wishing improve their writing skills!

In addition to freelance work, (weddings, jazz brunch gigs, etc.) I am the lead guitarist for the Funk/R&B band Water Seed and the soul project RetroFit. I attended Indiana University for jazz guitar and have studied under jazz greats Dan Miller, Corey Christiansen, and Oteil Burbridge.

I pride myself in taking a students learning needs and using that as my basis for their specific lesson plan, always on a case-by-c
ase basis, tailored to each individual student. Everyone is at a different waypoint on their path so why would I use a predetermined formula to try and help them, am I right? I am excited to meet and grow with every single one of you, let's learn to love the life we have and let our studies become radiant!

I teach all kinds of disciplines from guitar, mandolin, banjo, and clarinet, to creative writing, meditation, and even astrology. If you have any questions about my teaching methods, skill level in a certain discipline, or anything thing you can think of I would be more than happy to answer you!

Musically yours,

I have been playing clarinet professionally for over six years. My first performance was a production of "Guys and Dolls," and it opened up opportunities to play multiple woodwinds in all kinds of contexts. I am currently on-call to play with a number of symphony orchestras in town as well.
I am excited to share my passion for this beautiful instrument!

About Michael
I am a woodwind specialist with a degree in saxophone performance from the University of Arizona. I have been performing and competing since the fifth grade. Since arriving in Tucson in 2010, I have performed in dozens of groups playing many various musical styles including classical, jazz, musical theater, rock, funk and avant garde. Music has provided me with the opportunity to travel all over the world, from London to China and Mexico to Peru.
I opened my private lesson studio in 2012. Since then, I have cultivated a deep passion for creating personalized lessons for motivated students. My students have included beginners as young as eight years old to advanced players well into their retirement.
I'm looking forward to sharing my passion with you!

When my 11 year old son first began saxophone lessons with Michael Weiss, he was a true beginner but within 5 months, he was playing a song at a recital! Michael is patient and kind but firm in his direction and has instilled confidence in my son that he can play whatever songs he wants to play with focus and practice. Michael is flexible and adept at tailoring his lessons to the individual's needs. I highly recommend him.

I have been teaching for the past 6 years, and love working with all different students. My former students have been selected to be in the Colorado All-State Honor Band and have been accepted to their top choice colleges for music performance. In 2016, I attended the Aspen Summer Music Festival, where I learned a great deal about clarinet and teaching. My specialty is pinpointing bad habits and working towards effortless, high-quality sound and technique.

About Josh
I am an avid clarinetist, energetic performer and enthusiastic teacher. My dream career is to be a soloist like Martin Frost, to play in an orchestra, or compose and perform my music.
My passion for teaching is similar to my passion for performing, and I have experience teaching privately and in front of large groups, as a staff member for a high school marching band.

Josh has been a fantastic Instructor for my middle school age son. He worked closely with him on several pieces that were required to audition at two summer music camps helping him to move from near last position the year before to the top of the class. His improvements were formally recognized with an award at the end of 7th grade and I think Josh was a large part of that improvement. We were saddened to hear that Josh would be leaving the Denver area but wish him the best of success in his new ventures. Josh is an excellent instructor and we would certainly work with him again in the future.

Ready to put together some effective practice skills and learn how to get around the horn? Maybe you're getting ready for that All-State audition or to take that first chair spot or learn to play some fun tunes. I'm willing to help if you're able to practice. Texts vary depending on level, genre, and what you're interested in achieving. Topics to be covered include but aren't limited to: How to practice to make the most of our lessons and your time, good fundamentals and technique, sight reading, theory, improvisation, suggested listening and repertoire, audition prep...

About Kevin
School is important, but MUSIC is importanter. Learning to practice and love it is one of the most useful skills anybody can ask for in any field. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone that puts in honest practice and exploration will find a way around an instrument. For the last 20 years I have been teaching privately, in the public, private and charter schools, and have been writing and playing professionally. Some of my best students have pursued music as a career and some are engineers or housewives or something else, but playing music is something they all hold close to their hearts.

I had the pleasure of being Mr. Muncy's student during my high school years. I started as a beginner in my sophomore year having never taken a music lesson. I took this course simply to fulfill an arts requirement, but his infectious passion for music and teaching inspired in me a deeper interest in the subject. His patience, unique teaching style, and ability to communicate complicated musical concepts equipped me with the capability to pursue music more seriously. After graduating from his music program, I joined the symphony band at my university, held various steady professional gigs and formed my own groups for performing at charity events. Three years of lessons with Mr. Muncy, and some dedication on my end, allowed me to surpass my own expectations in music. I continue to play while pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant and feel privileged to have Mr. Muncy as a mentor. His lessons not only allowed me to pursue my passion for music, but have taught me life skills that have also molded me as a clinician. If you are looking to take music lessons, I highly recommend Mr. Kevin Muncy.

Kevin was an excellent teacher when I had him many moons ago - I can only imagine that he has improved since then. I was a beginner, learning the bass. That isn't Kevin's primary instrument, but he was knowledgeable enough to help me lay much of the foundation for the all that I know in bass playing today. He helped inform my music history knowledge, appreciation and pointed me to some great artists, books (esp. Free Play), and people to learn from. Perhaps more importantly, he really helped stimulate my growth and development within music and within life itself. I credit a good part of who I am and my success today to the tutelage and teaching of Kevin.

Extremely helpful! We broke down a piece of music I had for class that I was having some trouble with and by the end of the hour I was much more comfortable playing it! What I really liked is that she pointed out things I would have not noticed that made the rhythms easier to understand. Great advice on HOW to practice and how to best approach a difficult part in your music.

The most important part of learning an instrument is having fun! Learning music is such a great creative outlet, so I like to gear lessons towards the interests of my students and what type of music they're interested in. If the student is unsure about what direction they're interested in, no problem! I have lots of ideas about where to explore - jazz, funk, pop, classical, etc. If the student is in school, we'll make sure they're band music is all in order, and then we'll go on to other music to keep it fresh and interesting!

About Rachel
I'm a trained multi-instrumentalist and received my bachelor's degree in music at University of Michigan's music school. All the instruments I play make me a better player and teacher- saxophone, guitar, singing, and clarinet. I've been playing music for 15 years and teaching for 8 years. Music is such a great creative outlet, so it's important for lessons to be not only focused on the craft and routine, but fun, engaging, and interesting! I like to gear lessons towards my student's interests, so we can learn songs that are fun for the student. If they're not sure what direction they're interested in, no problem! There's many cool musical directions we can go in- jazz, classical, pop, r&b, musical theater, etc. We'll work together to make our lessons the best learning environment for you!

I study under a Doctor of Clarinet performance. I was an all-state Clarinet player in highschool. Now I play with the intercollegiate honor band. I can help prep my students for any competitions they may be facing and I can help them pick quality pieces of music to play. I can help anyone grow musically on the clarinet and teach them to love playing clarinet. I specialize in clarinet and will be able to help improve tone quality, intonation, and many other clarinet specific techniques.

About Alexandra
I know what it's like to be the last chair in band or what it's like to be the worst marcher on the field. But if you work hard and put effort into becoming a better player then you will succeed. I went from last chair in sixth grade to first chair at all-state my senior year and to getting a full tuition scholarship to college for clarinet all because I took lessons and worked at improving my skills every day. If I can do it you can to!

With a focus on theory, posture, and positioning, we'll prepare for auditions and a general knowledge of the clarinet.

About Katey
I graduated from a small, liberal arts university with a degree in music, focus in vocal performance. I sing classical, opera, jazz, pop, and rock. I have performed at Lincoln Center in New York, the Vatican in Rome, and Disneyland with Dick Van Dyke! I've worked with kids for 10+ years and taught private lessons for adults while in San Francisco for 6 years.
I also teach and play piano, guitar, ukulele, and clarinet. In my free time, I write music with my guitar and ukulele, mostly about social justice and my kitty, Rumble.
PLEASE NOTE: I do not have a piano at my studio. I have a keyboard but, if you are a piano student, I recommend meeting at a location with a piano.

Don't let money hold you or your child back from learning an instrument. Please reach out to me if you would like a sliding scale fee.

Also she's a great guitar player herself, and you should make her play the song Firework by Katy Perry.
