About Sze Lim
Hi parents/students,

My name is Sylivan. I'm a dedicated musician who is passionate in music education and guitar music. I have majored in Music and received my professional training at City College of New York with a minor in Education. I have been playing music for 20 years and have performed in many different occasions. Over the years, I have developed various kinds of skills in music from my education, formal training and experiences:

- Learned various types of music for over 10 years such as classical, rock, and pop
- Avid guitarist and also proficient in bass, drums, piano, and vocal
- Solid foundation of theory and harmony
- Worked as music and guitar instructor for private music lesson and other organizations such as summer camps and private music institutes.

I have also been teaching children and teenagers music for
over 10 years, including group classes and private lessons. Below are some of the goals in my teaching method and what students can benefit in every lesson:

- Explaining the structure of guitar and giving the basic information about the instrument
- Instructing students about both the basic and advance techniques in guitar playing
- Striking a fine blend of theory and practicality while teaching guitar playing
- Ability to understand the needs, short and long term goals of different students and changing the methods of teaching accordingly
- Preparing students for student recitals or public performances if necessary

I'm funny, friendly, outgoing, and love to play guitar. I’m also flexible and easy to work with, however when it comes to learning I’m strict and serious. Some of my students call me “Three-Face”, for I’m not only your teacher but also your friend and your coach: I will introduce you to the world of guitar as a teacher; jam and have fun with you as a friend; and I will train you and make sure you are on the right as a coach.

I like all kinds of music, from Classical to Metal and everything in between. Some of my favorite bands/artists who influence me include: Joe Satriani, Slash, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, Disturbed, Antoine Carre, Niccolo Paganini, Antonio Vivaldi…

Sharing my knowledge in music and guitar makes me happy, and it is the greatest joy for me to see my students grow and play the music they like. Guitar lessons should be fun and enjoyable, yet challenging.

Thank you very much for visiting my page and I hope to teach you soon!

Best wishes,

- Sylivan T.

*** Lesson Details ***
During our first lesson, we will first talk about your goal and music direction that you want to pursuit. Then based on your goal and direction, I will customize a curricular track and briefly explain the things that you need to know and what you need to focus on in order to achieve your goal.

As your instructor, my goal is to help you to reach your goals and to have fun with the music you enjoy. In each lesson, according to your progress, I will introduce you new concepts/materials using fun and easy-to-learn activities. Then we will work on the materials together and have fun jamming together. Yes!! You will feel like you are jamming along with your friend instead of taking a guitar lesson, because guitar lessons suppose to be fun!!!

Each particular lesson I will assign you some assignments. They would either be things that we already jammed on during the lesson, or something that I want you to work on your own. Then when we meet again, we will go over the assignments together and I will give you comments and advises to help you play better.

Below are only some of the instructional books that I usually use for teaching beginners. I will also use other instructional books and music repertories according to the ability of the students and their music style:

- Hal Leonard Guitar Method: Will Schmid and Greg Koch
- Alfred’s Basic Guitar Method: Alfred d’ Auberge and Morton Manus
- Hal Leonard Rock Guitar Method: Michael Mueller
- Solo Guitar Playing: Frederick M. Noad

From my experience as a teacher and student, I believe there is no such thing as a “Perfect Instructional Book”. Therefore along with the above instructional books I will add in some other activities and exercises written by myself.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to have a guitar and a chromatic tuner. Also a note book, some staff paper, and a pen and a pencil.

For electric guitar, it's necessary to have an amp and a .25 inch cable at home

*** Specialties ***
Usually use Mei Bay Guitar Method as a general guide and text for guitar teaching.

*** Specialized in classical, rock, blues, and pop ***

Sylivan is a great teacher with great personality. He was there to help me not only when I struggled with music and guitar but also when I felt down. I asked him why he cared so much and he told me a healthy mind is most important which helps in music learning =) Sylivan is also patient; even sometimes I can't stand myself but he was there to help me to learn lol He has passion in teaching and you can see it once he's in action.

About Jack
Hello there. I'm a native of Manchester, England now living/working/teaching in Washington Heights, NYC. I am a professional working bassist who thrives on sharing my knowledge of my craft with others who wish to learn. I have been teaching bass for 10 years and playing for 15. I also teach guitar and piano.

I started teaching bass 10 years ago to fellow students (music/non music students) at South Cheshire College in the North West of England. When I began my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Jazz at Middlesex University (London), I continued to teach privately. I also have experience teaching ensembles. I taught a rhythmic awareness class for 6+ people over a summer at Middlesex University. When I moved to the US I resumed my private teaching classes. I have taught in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Nashville, Tennessee and New York, New York.

I have had gigging experience both on land and sea, having played in the showband on both NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines) and CCL (Carnival Cruise Lines.) I have also played in some off Broadway productions and regularly continue to perform with various ensembles around the City and Tri-State area.

I have a strong grasp of music theory and specialize in Jazz. I believe ear development to be the most important skill in music as the ear is what we use to enjoy music after all! However I am a confident reader and will gladly help my students to develop their reading skills. I am proficient in a wide variety of styles such as Jazz, Funk, Latin, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Rock, Pop, Blues etc. So just about anything you'll want to learn, I'll be able to help you.

About Ben
I’m Ben of BZ Drum Studio. I’m a professional drummer and educator. I’ve performed around the world, in Japan, China, South America, Europe, Canada, and across the US having worked with some incredible jazz musicians (Randy Weston, Johnny O’Neal, Larry Ridley, David Williams, Roy Hargrove, Joel Press, Cecil Bridgewater, Deborah Davis, Joe Cohn, Jerry Dodgion, and Steve Nelson).

I specialize in jazz but play and teach many genres on both drum set and percussion. I’m fascinated by the many drumming traditions around the world, New Orleans, Brazil, West/Central Africa, European Classical, Klezmer, Cuba, American Jazz, Folk, and Rock and Roll.

I have a B.M. and M.M. from Manhattan School of Music and have 10+ years of private teaching experience. I’ve taught percussion classes at public, private, and charter schools and also have cond
ucted jazz masterclasses at various universities around the country. My students have been regularly chosen for prestigious ensembles such as Jazz at Lincoln Center’s student ensembles, Manhattan School of Music pre-college and summer camp, and Columbia University’s jazz ensembles.

In lessons we focus on strengthening the fundamentals (time, sound, groove feeling) while also working on creativity and drum set language. I have a passion for teaching my students. Lessons are usually generously extended over the allotted time, and I take each student’s goals into account when tailoring the individual lesson curriculums.

I owe Ben a lot. I spent about a month taking lessons with Ben to prep for an audition for a university jazz program (I had zero experience playing jazz before this). Ben was one of the best music teachers I have ever had: he managed to get me prepared for my audition in just a few short weeks (I got into the program and had an incredible experience), and, perhaps more importantly, he taught me basic principles about jazz and jazz drumming that I think about constantly - not only when I am playing, but when I’m listening to jazz (which is most of the day, thanks to all the great recommendations from Ben). Ben is also an awesome dude, and has been described to me by random jazz dudes at FatCat as one of the “best drummers in New York right now.” If you’re looking for a drum teacher, Ben is without a doubt the best choice out there.

Having been a student of Ben's for three years, I am proud to say that he is the best drum instructor I've ever had. Ben's approach is tailored directly to the student's needs, whether they be introductory or advanced. He is always supportive and encouraging of you to perform to your fullest potential and actively practice what you learn between lessons, for which he provides useful activities. Ben is also generous with his time each lesson, frequently spending a little extra time to ensure your understanding of the material. He is always prepared to start teaching at the appointed time, and he is easy to contact to set up lessons and flexible with his availability.

Outside of lessons, Ben has often invited me to see him play in clubs around New York City and sometimes perform myself if there's room. This has given me the opportunity to engage with the jazz community and see what I've been taught being applied in professional settings. Taking lessons from and spending time with Ben has been a fulfilling experience, and I would strongly recommend him to drumming students of all ages and backgrounds.

I am a professional singer, songwriter, music educator, and choir director. I sing in a wide range of musical styles such as classical, jazz, pop, Latin, and rock. I graduated from the Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY Queens College with a Bachelor of Music degree in classical vocal performance in May of 2015. I am also an alum of LaGuardia HS (also known as the “Fame” school).

I have been singing professionally as a cantor in Catholic Churches for the past ten years while at the same time gigging as a backup vocalist for synth pop and Latin music bands, singing in jam sessions during my free time, and performing original music. I am also working on my first EP slated for release later this year.

Since February of last year I’ve held the position of Director of Music at a Catholic Church in Queens, where I direct the English choir
and Spanish choir on the weekends. I also work as a teaching artist at an after school program in Queens, teaching music to elementary school students.

My teaching style is classical voice with an emphasis on breath support but I believe that having good vocal technique is easily transferable to any genre. I am flexible and willing to guide my students in reaching their musical goals!
