What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. I specialize in musical theatre, but have a thorough classical technique, as well as strong pop/rock/belt training.

My teaching style is highly energetic, and engages the development of the student's self-esteem and enjoyment, but is also focused on a foundational technique and strong work-ethic. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

I endorse this teacher highly!

I was having trouble finding a teacher by word-of-mouth - prospective teachers would not return phone calls and seems to have little interest in my son's musical education. Ever since Take Lessons contacted Lesley-Ann on my behalf, we have been in consistent contact. She has followed through on her promises, presented an appropriate enthusiasm for the job, and seems to have really inspired my teenage son to want to play the piano, and view this as a great opportunity. Isaac is an excellent teacher and is highly recommended. His method is not centered on drills, music reading or repetition, but rather on getting an understanding of how the notes, chords work together. In so doing, the student gets a great understanding of theory and it opens the door to improvisation. In addition he's very patient with folks such as myself who don't come to class with a deep understanding of music theory.

I started to study the piano at the age of seven with Hrant Minassian in my hometown of Island Park, New York. During high school I continued my studies with Jack Chaikin , a graduate of the Juilliard School. I attended Hofstra University where I received a B.A. in Music in 1979. At Hofstra, my piano teachers were Blanche Abram and Morton Estrin.

After graduating from Hofstra, I moved into Manhattan and continued my piano studies with Elena Wolkonsky at the Juilliard School. I also took a few lessons from Adam Aleksander, concert pianist, in Miami. So all together, I took lessons for 20 years with six different teachers!

I started teaching piano when I was 18 years old and taught all throughout college. After enjoying a successful career in data processing for 22 years, I decided to go back to teaching piano in 2003.

Emil was the teacher I was looking for. I have tried to learn piano on my own for a while now, but most of the time it became overwhelming. I wasn't sure I was going in the right direction, or if I was learning what I should know in the right order. So far, what Emil had done for me was to take what I've known already and add much more to it. He also has started to correct some bad habits I became accustomed to, which I would have never picked up on my own.He's very knowledgeable, and ties in music theory during the lesson. He's down to earth, throws in some jokes to lighten the mood, and create an enjoyable learning experience.

I'm a gigging musician and teacher who graduated from Oberlin College in May 2015 with a degree in Musical Studies and Physics. I was on the Division III tennis team there for two years as well. I pride myself on patience and empathy no matter what I teach, whether it feeling the pulse of a complicated drum groove or solving a challenging physics word problem. For music lessons, I strive to bring in a context of genre fluidity and history, so that a student knows where and what to explore on their own even when I am not in the room to show them. Overall, my teaching is all about inspiring students to do well and make their strengths work for them, rather than dryly coming up with the "right answer" or playing a tune the "right way" to get from point A to point B.

Professional Bio:

A recipient of the prestigious Lenore Annenberg Fellowship in the Arts, baritone Alex made his Vancouver Opera debut in the 2017 season as the title role in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, and will debut the role of Il Conte in the same opera in the 17/18 season with Opera Naples. Formerly a member of the ensembles of Theater Basel and Opernhaus Zürich, Alex made his European debut in Switzerland singing The Hunter in Rusalka, Moralès in Carmen and L’Ami in Debussy’s rarely performed La Chute de la Maison Usher. Since then, he went on to make several further role debuts in Zürich, including Silvio in Pagliacci under Alexander Vedernikov, Ned Keene in Peter Grimes under Erik Nielsen, and the three baritone roles of Bohuslav Martinu’s rarely performed Juliette, under Fabio Luisi.

Previous noteworthy engagements included his principal role debut with the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, NY, singing Belfiore in Verdi’s King For a Day, of which the New York Times noted the debut of a “sensational” new talent. In 2014, Alex performed in a high profile gala concert for the 85th Anniversary of the Ópera de Bellas Artes alongside legendary tenor Franzisco Araiza, soprano Maria Katzarava and bass Eric Halfvarson. He made his Lucerne Festival debut as Don Quixote in Manuel De Falla’s El Retable del Maese Pedro conducted by Clement Power, performed as the baritone soloist in Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurghisnacht with the Orchestra Symphonique de Mulhouse, and debuted the role of Sam in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti for the opening festival of Opernhaus Zürich’s 2012/13 season.

A 2007 B.M. graduate of Northwestern University, Alex received an Artist Diploma from the Academy of Vocal Arts in 2011, and has been a top prizewinner in several major international competitions.

Not only is Alex a kind, patient, and encouraging teacher, but he also presents valuable technical information in a clear and comprehensible manner. I leave each lesson feeling vocally fresh and with new nuggets of vocal wisdom to think about during the week.

I also feel that I can apply the vocal technique Alex teaches to the many different genres of music that I sing (opera, musical theater, gospel, etc.)

Would highly recommend Alex!! He’s a gem!
