About Jerry
I've been playing and loving music for well more than half a century, now. I got started in second grade when my grandpa brought home a little violin one day, and I've been at it ever since. I was fortunate to take lessons for more than ten years with Carita Page, a teacher who was very warm, encouraging, and caring. I do my best to pass that on to my students in addition to the technique of playing and the theory of music, fascinating as those are.

I feel that playing in groups is very valuable experience for students and gives you a side of music that private lessons alone cannot. I encourage students to look for opportunities to do that. To help provide those opportunities I organized the Cranbury Scout Band, one of very few continuously-operating Scout bands in the country, which I have directed for more that ten years now.
I've also been on the staff of several Jamboree Scout bands.

*** Lesson Details ***
Every student is a different individual and learns in different ways. I try to make lessons as interesting and as useful to each student as I can, and include different things based on your interests and capabilities. Most students find duets are fun, so I include them often - both duets with the same instrument you are studying and duets with other instruments as well so you can learn the sound of such combinations. I encourage you to "play with your ears" as well as your fingers, to become a critical listener to your own performance and to decide whether you sound the way you want to sound.

I encourage students to try different things to become a more rounded musician. This might be something closely related - a flutist trying the piccolo or a clarinetist trying the bass clarinet. Or, it might be further afield - a flutist trying the guitar or a violinist learning movable Do and solfeggio singing. Every aspect of music is good to know.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My music studio is in a separate building - actually a renovated barn about two centuries old. The studio contains a piano and all the other instruments that I teach, and is roomy enough not only for private lessons but for musical groups up to about ten. I have many other resources there as well, including files of music, a small music library, and a computer that we can use for many purposes.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need their instruments, music, and stands.
I bring my own instrument.

With eight years of flute training, Liz loves sharing her techniques she learned throughout her years as first chair flute in concert band and marching band.

About Liz
After graduating California Institute of the Arts with a multi-focus on several aspects of music including African dance, Indonesian gamelan, songwriting, recording, classical voice and piano, folk guitar, and more, Liz had the excellent opportunity to teach theater to a local musical theater summer youth program. All summer, she taught class sizes ranging from 10 to 26 students of the ages 5-10. Her initiative later led to being hired at this local community theater. Along with this theater teaching experience, she has been teaching piano, guitar, ukulele, flute & voice lessons for over 10 years. Her students have gone from knowing nothing about music to learning and performing entire pieces on their own as well as even auditioning & for agents and becoming signed artists in Los Angeles. Liz knows that it is her place in the world to tea
ch music & spread positivity through her own music and would love nothing more than make learning music a positive and fun experience for everyone.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach out of the Alfred's Piano course, but am open to trying out any music books you may already have in your home. I do expect my students to purchase the books they would like to learn out of and to have the material I have given them for homework ready, completed, and practiced by the time we have our weekly lesson. I recommend at least twenty to thirty minutes of practice every day, and will give rewards for having practiced well, and for performing well in our lessons. I would love it for my students to be clear on what they would like to learn, and I love using songs that the student enjoys to make his or her music learning process fun.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In my home studio, I have a full size Cable-Nelson upright piano, as well as two ukuleles, and two guitars (one acoustic-electric and one electric).

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I travel, I bring my own instrument that the student is learning on so that I can demonstrate, as well as a music stand if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, folk, opera, musical theater, classical, rock, reggae

James is an amazing teacher! He is extremely patient and thorough. In addition to helping you with your playing, he helps you with theory as well. I learned more from him in one year than my past teacher in three. Because of him, I was able to get into my top choice school for music with a large scholarship.

I am a passionate musician and educator. I have worked for many years as a private flute instructor on both the modern and baroque flute, gaining experience teaching many age and skill levels. Lessons are tailored to the individual needs and goals of the student, with an emphasis on developing tone, technique, and breathing skills. Students will also be encouraged to think about the music that they play. As a musician, I developed an interest in the field of Historical Performance over the course of my undergraduate degree. In this field, one not only studies the music of past periods, but studies its relevance to the social, political, and cultural circumstances of its time. I believe this puts me in a unique position as a music educator, as I understand the importance of teaching students to connect musical works to their historical contexts. This is a skill that will provide them with a richer understanding of all types of music, including both classical and popular, and give them ...

About Natalie
I am a flutist and music teacher new to the state of Illinois. I received a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and Music Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2012 and a Master of Music in Flute Performance in 2015. I have experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, wind quintets, as well as solo music. I have appeared as a concerto soloist with the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra and the Five College Early Music Program’s Euridice Baroque Orchestra, and I have attended the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College. My numerous years of experience as a performer and education background inform my philosophy as a music teacher.

I recently finished a second Master’s Degree in Historical Performance as a recipient of the Conservatory Dean Scholarship from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. There I learned t
o play many types of flutes, including the Renaissance flute, Baroque flute, Classical flute, and recorder. I am interested in the history of the flute, and learning to play new instruments is always an exciting challenge. I encourage my students to develop their physical skills as musicians, and also explore their own passions. Though my recent area of study has been historical music, I also have significant experience in more recent music as well.

I look forward to becoming your teacher!

Not many teachers can say that they are an active teacher and performer; fewer of those can say that they maintain their own private studio at the end of their public school day. That being said, I think what really separates me as a teacher is not my many hours of teaching, but rather my dedication to my students. I teach outside of my public school job because I feel that music can be a powerful and underrepresented force in a student's public school education. I strive to help students realize musical concepts in ways that inform both their musicianship, and their concept of learning.

About Daniel
Since graduating from Temple in 2016, my passion for shaping the next generation has offered me many opportunities in the world of education. From my experience in a public schools, to managing my own private lesson studio, I have gained an immense respect and appreciation for the craft of teaching. In teaching others, I have informed my own learning process, and have approached other crafts such as improvisation, musical instrument repair, and software engineering at a high level.

I have been taking flute lessons with Dan for the past four months. My technique and improvisational skills have increased dramatically since I started with Dan, and I have seen myself grow as a musician much quicker than when I was getting lessons elsewhere. I also always feels very comfortable asking him any questions that I have (no matter how silly) and I find that he is very good at communicating complex ideas. He's also incredibly kind and patient! I would definitely recommend him to anyone for flute (and saxophone/clarinet) lessons - he's a step above other teachers in the Philly area.

I wish there were more teachers like Dan. He is kind, passionate, understanding, flexible. What I like most about lessons though is the fact that he asks me, "What did you learn this week?" almost every lesson. If you haven't taken a lesson with him yet, do it! You'll be amazed how much you learn.

My 7 year-old son began learning recorder with Leasia as a complete beginner. He is taking lessons with Lesia as a music teacher for the past 9 months. She is patient and very friendly. Lesia taught him many things so far, such as how to read notes, all the fundamental techniques of recorder playing including correct posture, hand position, fingering and breathing. Also, my son learned how to play simple classic melodies like "Mary had a little lamb”, “Old Old McDonald had a farm”, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and etc. We are gradually transitioning from recorder to flute now. My son looks forward to Lesia’s lessons, and is enjoying music. I recommend Lesia to everyone and anyone interested in learning to play recorder and flute.

With the lessons that we will have together, we will begin with long tones to warm up the lungs and open up the throat. This warm up is vital to creating and maintaining a good tone through the duration of the lesson.
Next there will be an exercise to practice technique using a combination of scales and arpeggios.
From this point, you will be ready to present the pieces you have been working on and together we will help you improve through a variety of practice techniques. We will also discuss your goals as a musician and make the necessary plans to make those goals happen.

About Maddie
Hello there!
I can’t wait to get started with you in our lessons together. I really do enjoy teaching and helping others improve. I have been playing the flute since I was about the age of nine and I just recently graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Music (I loved every minute of it). Throughout my life I have had the opportunity to teach and learn from my peers and other students, and help them reach their goals! I have also really enjoyed having the opportunity to perform with various groups as well as individually throughout my musical career. Performing is something that I cherish as a flutist! Something I’ve always really focused on as a student and a teacher is tone—tone is the very first thing that an audience will notice about your playing as a flutist, so it’s always worth improving! Along with tone comes musicality and fluid t
echnique. These two aspects of playing are the next stepping stones to the foundation of a strong tone. I would love the chance to get to know you and become more acquainted!
