Robyn J.

Knoxville, TN

About Robyn

I have been playing violin and viola for over 20 years. I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in music and teach assorted music courses at Pellissippi State Community College and Lincoln Memorial University. I have taught children, teens, and adults; both beginners and continuing students. I learn where the student is skill-wise and we go from there. I also ask the student what his/her goals are, so that we have a set to-do list with which to work. Feel free to browse my website at www.robynjames.com!

*** Lesson Details ***
We will work at your pace--I will push you, but I am aware that
everyone works at a different speed. I will learn that speed and work with you accordingly. I expect students to practice and do their best, but I also understand that life sometimes gets in the way. After a few months, you will know the basics of the instrument and be able to play recognizable tunes for your family and friends!

*** Studio Equipment - Parents ***
Music room/office with seating for parents/guardians in living room.

*** Studio Equipment - Students ***
I provide a music stand in my studio, but nothing else. My students should have an instrument with all accessories (bow, case, shoulder rest) and also a music stand for home practicing.

Robyn James is an excellent viola teacher! She is patient, kind, extremely knowledgeable, understanding, and easily adapts to each student's individual playing style and ability. She is also very flexible when it comes to scheduling (especially if a scheduling conflict occurs). I've played the viola for 10 years and I had taken a small break from the instrument when I was introduced to Robyn in school. Since starting lessons with her almost a year ago, my confidence as a person and a player have improved and I have her to thank for it. She is always able to answer any and all of my questions, and if she doesn't have one right away, she does her research and gets back to me by our next lesson. She is very serious about what she does and you can tell how much she loves it. She also knows how to challenge her students in a way that is not overwhelming, and, as long as you come prepared and ready to learn and grow, she is one of the best teachers that you could possibly ask for. I look forward to seeing her every week. Robyn is the best!

Viola Lessons

I have played the viola from sixth to twelfth grade, but never taken a private lesson until signing up to take one at Pellissippi State Community College. From the first day of the lessons that semester until the last I looked forward to going to them. Robyn easy to get along with and an excellent teacher as well as violist and violinist. While I haven't had her as an instructor for violin using what I know from my viola lessons and having heard her play violin I would imagine those lessons are just as fun and fruitful as the viola lessons.

Tim R.

Powell, TN

About Tim

With classical and jazz guitar studies, with years of collaborative composition in progressive rock and fusion, and with years of solo guitar composing, I have attained a high level of technique, gained a deep understanding of music theory and songwriting, and authored a comprehensive book, "Understand, See, Hear - Become One with the Guitar." My musical journey as a composer and recording artist has always been an expression of my individuality. With many years teaching private lessons, I offer myself as a mentor, to help anyone achieve their voice, their passion, on the guitar.

Details ***
Music is a subjective experience. As a listener, what you love reflects yourself; similarly, what you play reflects yourself. As your mentor, my goal is to nurture your development as a guitar player, as well as, nurture your self-expression through the instrument. With perseverance, your goals as a musician can be attained with each lesson a step in understanding and in motor skills to this end. Always though, the objective is that the musical journey is fun and fulfilling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
separate music room seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
Approaching the guitar holistically, I show how the guitar is organized using templates from my book. Musical concepts such as chords and scales are applied within the guitar's holistic framework and are related to the student's preferred artists/songs. If it compliments the student's learning style, musical notation is used. Styles I specialize in are rock 'n' roll, jazz, and classical.

Will F.

Knoxville, TN

About Will

I teach guitar, drums and vocals to an array of students ranging from 10 to 60. Not only do I teach but I also write songs for certain students who have a desire to perform their own music as well as learning and honing their craft on their instrument. I am currently helping a vocal student of mine write some songs after scales and warm-ups and am working with one of my top guitar students tomorrow on different scale techniques. I just placed a drum student in the finals in Alternative Press Magazine's Hit Like A Girl competition. She was the top vote getter with 1,026 votes and is in the top
10 under 18 drummers in the world. I am also working with more and more students on songwriting and showing them different chords and ways to go about writing a song. I would love to get started with you as soon as possible and we will get you where you want to be musically. I find that if a student has a particular song or a rhythm pattern they want to learn they learn more quickly. They're learning and having fun at the same time. We will find what you want to learn and we will get it down! Furthermore, it's your choice if you would rather come to my place as a lot of my students do or have me come to your place as a lot of them do. I look forward to speaking with you! Cheers!

*** Lesson Details ***
I will get you started depending on your skill level. I usually, of course, see where we're at there and then decide what needs to be taught. With each respective student I usually make them a CDR the lessons for you so you can take them home and improve on what we've worked on.

Morwenna A.

New Market, TN

About Morwenna

Since I have been in this business for so many years and lived with the people of the Middle East for so many years, I can offer you the finest training in this dance form. I know dance this dance form from the inside out. My training started as a child in the UK. It continued in Canada and also in the USA. I know and understand dance and the human body. I understand where movement comes from and can give this to you. I am lucky enough to have learned from the best that the dance has to offer both here in NYC and overseas. I am a member in good standing with several national dance organization
s including CID -UNESCO which is international in 63 counties. I will not give you rose colored glasses to see with but will teach you the correct way to approach this dance that is best for you and the dance form. This dance is a complex cultural style of dance.

All classes begin with a warm-up. The warm up I have designed is to help improve your technique and to make sure your posture is correct so there is no injury to the body. We also will do strengthening exercises for detail and and beauty of movement. Finally there will be drills for the hips and gluttes as it is very important that these moves are done correctly. We do work across the floor and in the center of the room. This will consist of individual steps and also then put into short combinations. From there we move onto some choreography. These could be in the form of Oriental Dance (Belly Dance) or a folkloric dance that represents an area that is also in the Middle East. Why? Because this dance is comprised of these folkloric dances and then put into a more sophisticated setting. We end the class with a short cool-down that is more improvisation by nature so you can just feel the music and the rhythms.

I will not tell you any more than that, but, believe me no matter what style of dance you end up doing in the end be it American Cabaret, Lebanese, Egyptian. or even Tribal, your posture, and attitude will be professional and your dance will look great with high standards. So sign up and become a dancer of the finest kind. If you would like to be certified as a professional we can also offer certification through CID. This certification is accepted and regarded with esteem world wide.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio is a at her home with a separate entrance, There is plenty of parking either on the street or in the driveway. There is a spring wood floor so no one will ever hurt their spines or have injuries to their feet and legs. Special speakers and a sound system so all music is clear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If Morwenna has to travel to you then it is required you have space for this. Lacking mirrors is a little inconvenient but not unmanageable. Anything else we can handle.

*** Specialties ***
We offer only Middle Eastern Styles. This is our forte so we can better serve you. Morwenna is absolutely the best in the business in this area. After spending 40 odd years in the business, being married into the culture for almost as long, she has a great feeling for the people, the dance and you. Teaching is her passion and the sharing of information with you.

I've had the privilege to study the art of belly dancing with the Artistic Director of Art Dance Academy, Morwenna Assaf. She is a great teacher, choreographer and performer. Her love and dedication to the art of belly dance is evident in her instruction. She is excellent in breaking down movements so you can understand and master the movement. She has been, and continues to be an inspiration to me.

Morwenna is a wonderful person and an awesome teacher!

I had no dance experience when I started taking classes with her beyond watching some movies and being fascinated with how the dancers moved so gracefully.
I have been taking classes with her for close to two months now and know I still have a long way to go but she is always supportive of her students, making sure each knows why something is done a specific way and when it is done.
She impressed me so much in my first class with her that I recruited several family members to take the class with me.
We have a lot of fun while we learn the elements of this awesome dance style!
Don't get me wrong........you WILL sweat and you WILL be a little or a lot sore because you are going to use muscles you may not even know you have, let alone used before!
Her class is a wonderful stress reliever and I tell everyone they should at least try it!!!!!!
She shares her knowledge in a way that anyone can understand!
She has a fountain of knowledge and would do a wonderful job of teaching a college level class on the history of Arabic Belly Dance if she wanted to do that.
I am grateful I have received the opportunity to have her as my teacher and mentor!
You would not regret signing up with this awesome lady!
