Experienced Music teacher of 8 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of their instrument and theory skills. I specialize in all styles. Typically, I use a variety of method books to pick from to meet the needs of the students. I also have many tools available to use during lessons.
My students have gone on to NYSSMA and on to college auditions successfully!

I love teaching and playing flute. Whether your are primarily a flutist or a woodwind doubler I can help with tone production, technique and building your repertoire.

In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 7 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students€™ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one€™s creativity.

I teach through the perspective of a modern musician and songwriter. I want to make sure you are relaxed and having fun in our lessons and that we are following a path of learning that resonates with you. In flute lessons with me, you will learn how to use the right air pressure, placement and posture to create beautiful clear notes, How to read music, music theory knowledge and vocabulary and how to control, sustain and manipulate breath to play through pieces of growing difficulty. We will do this through traditional flute method and exercise books as well as by playing the melodies you know and love. Learning the flute can feel daunting at first, but I can help you to quickly create great sounding notes so you can get to playing!

Jonathan is Artist-in-Residence at American University in Washington, DC and teaches flute at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA. He performs with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and other ensembles in the Washington DC area. Jonathan lives in Arlington with his wife, cellist Amy , and daughter Sarah.

He maintains an active teaching studio at his home. He has been principal flutist of the Mexico City Philharmonic, and has made recordings for NPR and the Discovery Channel. An active chamber musician and soloist, he has been featured at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC; as soloist with the New American Chamber orchestra, and at the Old Isleworth Festival in London, England.

He holds a MM from Juilliard where he was a scholarship student of Samuel Baron. He studied with Thomas Nyfenger on a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, and in Paris with Michel Debost.
