I teach music from a holistic perspective. My approach marries theory, musicianship, and technique with the emotional engagement and storytelling qualities inherent to good, evocative music. Lessons are created and curated for you, your specific goals, and learning preferences. If you want to learn how to jam with a jazz band, play a concerto with a symphony, play world music, or simply learn holiday songs for your family ... I can help!
My students learn not only how to play music but how to understand it. I try to make lessons fun and engaging for students of all ages (5+) and abilities (brand new - advanced).
I have performed at Carnegie Hall and alongside great jazz musicians such as Dave Douglas, Wayne Bergeron, Donny McCaslin, Randy Brecker, Ada Rovatti, Charlie Shoemake, and Grammy Award winner Louie Ortega. Born and raised in San Luis Obispo, CA, my studies at Cuesta College, Cal Poly, and the Central Coast Jazz Institute have helped me become an active and versatile ...

Learn to play one of the most recognizable instruments in the orchestra. The flute plays beautiful melodies and embellishments to add to the mood of many pieces. I can teach you how to have a good tone, how to keep your embuchure strong, and how to keep your hands from cramping up. I will use scales, breathing drills, and support training to allow you to reach your goals. I can take you as far as playing in a mid grade orchestra, and intermediate solo pieces. Contact me to talk about your goals and set up lessons.

I Learnt how to play a high D in class!"

Diane was great! I have played other musical instruments in the past, but never the flute. I told her I wanted to learn to play the flute in just 3 lessons. She didn't laugh and tell me that was impossible, but instead worked with me to achieve my goal! She was patient, thoughtful, great at pointing out little things that instantly improved my playing. She even went above and beyond by emailing me a link to a video tutorial. I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn to play the flute."

During my time with Michelle, I felt that my lessons were excellently paced—she knew when to push and challenge me, but also made sure I was comfortable with the material, and didn't rush me if something proved more difficult. Over the years, we progressed through theory, breathing techniques, scales, playing with an accompanist or another flutist, etc. in a way that felt very natural and appropriate. Additionally, the relationship we built became very important to me as a student. There were several times that, as an overextended middle- or high-schooler, I seriously thought about quitting flute—but the idea of stopping lessons with Michelle was sad enough to make me reconsider each time. I truly appreciated how much she cared about me both as a musician and as a person, and was thankful in the end to have kept playing with her as long as I did.
Michelle is easy-going and knowledgeable, kind and talented, understanding and wonderful. I will always be so grateful for the kind of instruction and encouragement I received from her—she helped me grow as a musician in every way. Thank you so much!!"
