Alexander A.

Tacoma, WA

About Alexander

My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music. I offer clients a unique learning experience with customized lesson plans and personalized attention to fit your exact goals and needs. These aren’t just words to me…they are a commitment I make to everyone that I have the pleasure of working with.

Here’s who I am…

I earned a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music where I studied Bass Performance and Composition. I have years of experience playing upright and electric bass in many styles such as rock, jazz, orchestral, and big band. I’ve studied a variety of instruments ov
er the last 20 years including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and piano.

Here’s what I can do for you…

I will give you my full attention and unyielding patience with each and every lesson. Together we will explore the principals of music that will enable you to learn to play in any style you choose to study. Ultimately my job is not to teach you to play, but to show you how to teach yourself. I will arm you with a thorough understanding of technique and theory.

I love working with kids and adults. I love brand new players with no experience as well as seasoned players who just want to fill in some gaps in their knowledge. Whatever your age, and wherever you’re at with your playing, I hope you will give me the chance to help you have more fun and confidence in music.

Every player I work with gets access to a personal online Lesson Journal where you can see my notes from our lessons, do homework from your “Stuff to work on” lists, and access my entire digital library! Every lesson is designed just for you.

Let’s get started…

You can take lessons at my studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

For lessons in my studio, I can provide instruments and amplifiers for both of us.

There is ample seating for parents to sit in on lessons. Parking is available in the driveway.

You’re going to love your lessons!

I have had 3 lessons with Alexander so far and I have 2 more left. I'm still up in the air whether I will continue lessons with him or not. Here's why;

Sustains: Professional and Knowledgeable; Alexander definitely knows what he's talking about. I've noticed major improvements since I've started working with him. Keep in mind, I practice a lot on my own, but Alexander provides you with the tools and materials you need to continue growing in the fastest way possible. He doesn't have a teaching method set in stone. He tailors each lesson to benefit the student based on where he or she is skill-wise. Alexander observes you closely while you play and offers you advice and solutions to specific problems when he notices you struggling. Some of my issues are solved immediately.

Improves: Alexander lacks, in my opinion, a very important virtue that I believe all teachers should possess. A passion to teach you. You forget this when you are sitting with him in his studio, but the realization comes back and hits you when the clock hits 30 minutes exact and he says, "And that's all we have time for." Let me be very clear, -I'm receiving what a paid for-, so I'm not upset. I just think a teacher should invest in a student's growth and their commitment to the student shouldn't be based solely on what they make out of it financially. Unfortunately, I know that if the money ever stops coming in our lessons will end immediately. Once again, I can't complain or be upset. I paid for a service and I'm receiving it.

This was made clear to me again last week when I had to cancel a lesson.
The teachers need a 24-hour notice for cancellations which is fair and understandable. However, I didn't know this at the time so when I cancelled he only had about 4 hours notice. His initial response was that, "He understood but TakeLessons will charge you for the lesson anyway. Let me know if you still want to meet." After texting him back explaining my problem with that, he went ahead and ensured I wasn't charged. Let me repeat, -In the end he did help me-, but if I hadn't said anything he would've let TakeLessons charge me.

Conclusion: 4 stars. I paid for a service and I'm receiving it well. Alexander's talent for teaching really shines when you listen to his advice, act on it, and notice yourself improving. Understand that improvement comes from practicing on your own time, but Alexander will provide you with everything you need to expedite your growth.
Remember, however, this is a business. If they stop profiting from you don't expect any leniency.

David C.

Lakewood, WA

About David

Hello!

My name is David, and I am a music teacher of many different subjects. These include guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, recording, music theory, production, composition and film music composition.

All styles, and all ages. Classical, Rock, Alternative, Blues, Jazz, and more!

I have a Masters Degree in music from The University of Melbourne in Australia, as well as having the distinction of a Bachelors Degree in Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. I am one of the 16% of people who attended Cornish that actually graduated from their school.

Many times a student w
ill come to me after having been with another teacher for some time,.. they express to me that the other instructor did not teach them what they wanted to learn, nor did they achieve the result that they wanted. The instructor perhaps had them mired in endless exercises and studies that were great to get you ready to play music, but perhaps was not music in and of itself. I find that when I get right down to the nitty gritty of playing, and show my students a song they love and know, and get them playing their instrument, by the end of the session that they are usually thrilled and excited. In the end it makes them work harder and practice long because THEY ARE PLAYING MUSIC ON THE THEIR INSTRUMENT!!!

Certainly exercises are of paramount importance, but when you can make that connection with a student and help them to relate to the guitar the exercises are ultimately easier to them, and the experience of playing guitar an enjoyable and less alienating task.

Grab your guitar and start today!! Let's get you playing TODAY!!!!

TESTIMONIALS:

"I am very happy with my decision to take lessons with David. In just 2 months I've gone from strumming some chords to understanding picking patterns, learning how to put together an entire song, and expanding my techniques. I am very surprised at how much technical skill I have been able to pick up in such a short period of time"

Marianne Burch, Tacoma

"I'm 46 years old and my only known talent is for overcomplicating things. I've always admired a good guitar player and wanted to learn to play myself--who doesn't?--but felt I didn't have the talent or just "couldn't do it." Then I found David Jaedyn C. and he said, 'Oh yes you can. Commit to 4 lessons up front and you'll see that you can.' I took the leap and sure enough, he had me playing blues riffs in less than one month. All I had to do was listen and do as he instructed me to and it all comes very naturally. There's no stress, just a whole lot of fun! If you're like me and you thought you couldn't play guitar, start with David and just have some fun with it. It's simple. You won't want to put the guitar down again!"

Dan DuBeau, Tacoma

I had been playing guitar for about 5 years and had only been self taught. I found myself completely stuck playing the same chords and not able to play riffs or solos at all. In my first lesson I was playing the blues with slides and hammer ons and pull offs. In a couple of lessons he had me soloing in different keys and playing riffs from guitar gods! He was able to teach me in a couple lessons what took me years trying to teach myself! He makes lessons so much fun because not only are you learning the music theory but he relates it to popular songs that you can practice along with. He also has so much knowledge in other aspects as well. He can teach you about music gear and amps or help you compose your own music. He caters to your style and taste in music and can teach you ANYTHING!

Ashley Allen

I love guitar period, but it's overtly frustrating when you have no idea where to start, or how to play at all. I went through multiple guitar instructors trying to learn how to play and each of them weren't very specific, or didn't hone in on any one thing at a time so you could really start to get it down and process it. Then we happened to find David, and he was really what we were looking for. I started picking up chords like no other, It helped, and is helping tremendously. He goes into depth about the song, letting you comprehend it a little more, and ultimately learning it quicker and better.

Skye Reed, Tacoma WA

I have had 4 different Blues guitar Teacher in the last 6 months, getting nowhere as far as really playing some Blues until I ran across David. The other teachers just wanted me to learn the pentatonic scales, Major and Minor. That took a lot of boring weeks and I am sure I will need to know those scales but I just wanted someone to show / teach me Blues chords, related to Blues songs and the timing to the chord changes so I could start playing some kind of Blues. I have had 6 one hour lessons so far with David and I am playing the Blues. The first 4 hours Dave showed me a E, A, B7 blues chord progression with some step up and step down notes. The 2nd 2 hours Dave showed me a A, D9, A7,E9 Blues chords and Blues timing with slides.

I take one hour Lessons every Thursday and in 6 hours I am playing the Blues. I picked up the guitar about 6 months ago, started teaching myself and not really getting anywhere. I am not a fast learner, about average in learning something new. Now I set a home Learning my guitar and polishing the Blues songs that David has taught me, starting to get FUN.

Les Fairley Tacoma, Wa.

Working with David has made me focus on areas of my chops that needed fine tuning. He provides the basic exercises and tools that, when practiced enough in a zen-like manner, clarifies your understanding of movement on the fret board, and makes you sound a bit more professional. Questions regarding speed, theory, notation, composition, and even string size, are ready for answer with David, which is what keeps me working with him. From begining, to intermediate, to professional levels, if you're looking to improve your chops, Dave's your guy.

Frank Lorenzo, Seattle WA

I had tried many different instructors and had become very frustrated with trying to learn guitar. Within one lesson David had me playing ACDC and RUSH! David just has a way of explaining things so that they make sense and doesn't waste any time getting right down to the nuts and bolts of guitar. A lot of other instructors spend alot of time getting you 'ready' to play guitar, but with David we got down to playing guitar right away!

I've been working with David for a couple of months, and it has been a great experience. I'm new to bass, with a little guitar experience--he quickly sized up what I knew and had me working on exercises and a great bass line that got me playing right away. He has been very flexible and accommodating of my schedule needs, and he gives plenty of positive and constructive feedback. I've been working in education for nearly 30 years, and I know a great teacher when I see one. David fits the bill, and I'm lucky to be working with him.

Renata F.

Yelm, WA

About Renata

Sharing the joy of music has been my passion since childhood. I began studying piano at the age of 4 and have been performing since the age of 6. After graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, I began teaching. I continued teaching, performing and accompanying while completing a Bachelor of Music from University of Toronto and a Masters of Music from Texas A&M, Commerce.

My experience and training have given me the opportunities to receive numerous awards in solo and duo piano competitions. Some performances include solo and duo piano, chamber music and symphony orche
stras, choirs and with vocalists and instrumentalists.

Being classically trained and a proficient sight reader, this has enabled me to play a variety of styles of music and accompany vocalists and instrumentalists and be able to play and teach from a lead sheet.
My other experiences include being an organist, musical director and choirmaster.

Renata has taught piano privately in her studios in Canada and TX for over 20 yrs before moving to Washington recently.

She recorded 2 solo piano CDs.

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced student, my goal is for everyone to come out of each lesson with confidence that you have learned something or are on your way of accomplishing what you want to work on.
During the lessons, I emphasize the basics of note reading, technic, learning songs/pieces, theory and good practice habits. Depending on the age and level, a variety of fun activities, ear training, transposing, and playing songs of students' choice are incorporated into the lessons. I try to encourage the students' strengths and also focus on the things the students need to practice, depending on their level. Each student is unique and as I get to know the students, I am able to use my flexibility and musical training to develop ways to teach them.
I encourage my students to participate in recitals, contests and other performance projects (making a tape for example).
My goal in teaching students, is for them to learn in a positive atmosphere, for me to be able to share my enjoyment of music, and hopefully, for them to also enjoy playing.

Kellyn B.

Centralia, WA

About Kellyn

Hello! My name is Kellyn B, and I would love to have the honor of being your music teacher! Having played piano for over sixteen years, and having sung for over a little over six years, I am happy to say music has been a huge part of me for most of my life. I have had a passion for it since I was a young child, and it has pushed me to now pursue a career in it.

I currently am going to school for a degree in Music Therapy at ASU, where I have about a year and a half left until I obtain my Bachelor's Degree. Prior to ASU, Having grown up in Washington State, I studied at Centralia College un
der the phenomenal Professor of Music, Donna Huffman, having completed my Associates of Arts with an emphasis in Music Theory.

I have been teaching now for the past three years, doing in home lessons, and teaching in an actual studio. I teach any student from age of four to ninety-nine...anyone can have fun learning music! I emphasize GREATLY on theory, for I believe it is a key building block to understanding music. However, I also emphasize greatly on having FUN! We sometimes forget music is to be enjoyed, not something to stress over, so I try and make every lesson enjoyable and educational, both hand in hand.

From a young age, my musical career started when I got the opportunity to play piano for a local dance studio when I was living in Washington State, called The Dance Academy in Centralia, WA. I played there for just over six years, accompanying in lessons and performing in the dance recitals.

Also at a young age, i got the opportunity to teach young children the basics of the Finale program, where we took a summer to help these children compose their own pieces. I also got the chance to help them learn the program ProTools, a digitally composing program that assisted with their composing and ear training skills.

Prior to these events, I have had gigs as a church accompanist, for a high school theatrical event, where I was the solo accompanist for an entire show, vocal accompanying gigs, performances for schools and churches, etc.

I have performing experience including master classes, adjudications, dance recitals, theatrical performances, church services, private occasions, dinner shows, etc. Anything you can name, I am 99% sure I have played for!

I am confident in my abilities to play, sing, and teach, and have a deep passion to share it with anyone who is willing. I am studying Music Therapy simply because I understand the potential of music, and how much it can touch one's life in such a positive way. The gift of music can not only change your life, but those around you to. I have seen it done in so many circumstances, and it pleases me to think I can help someone reach that someday. So let's learn this crazy thing called "music" together, and have fun with it every step of the way!
