About Caleb

Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and types of events.

Caleb performs in Chicago with soul-pop band The Right Now as well as his original funk band Nasty Snacks. He has played in horn sections for Latin, funk, and big-band jazz bands, as well as Afrobeat, indie rock, R&B/soul, and hip-hop/rap groups.

He has also played the national anthem for the president at opening night of the Chicago Bulls season, been featured at Chicago Blackhawks games, principal trumpet in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras and in the DePaul Screamin’ Demons Pep Band at Madison Square Garden. Caleb al

so regularly lends his solo talents to wedding parties and church services, and is one-fourth of the Chicago for-hire horn section Revolution Horns. Other musical endeavors include a performance on the Steve Harvey Show, playing trumpet for the Broadway musical I Love Lucy in downtown Chicago, and a coveted chance to perform in master classes for his idols Adolph “Bud” Herseth and Chris Martin.

Caleb has been teaching privately in the Chicago area for 8 years now and is eager to teach students with any amount of experience, especially those who are eager to approach music from a variety of perspectives.

---

I believe that the best way to teach a brass instrument at any level, is simply to check in and make sure that the student has a great understanding of what a beautiful sound is on their instrument. This is done in a patient and positive environment, filled with the best possible music making to serve as a model to aspire to. With small, attainable goals and the encouragement to practice at least a small amount on a daily basis, you cannot help but improve, while hopefully having a good time playing whatever music interests you. The journey is a bit different for everyone, but anyone can make a beautiful sound, and go from there!

---

I like to strike a balance of teaching out of various method books(depending on the student and their level of ability, some are more suitable than others of course and I help guide the way), and learning to play by ear, which can be almost anything the student wants to learn, provided it's not overly complicated for them. Technique has it's place, but is certainly not the whole story. Learning music that is fun, while at the same time learning to get better at your instrument, makes the overall process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you have the right tools, music is something that can be fulfilling for the rest of your life, especially when you learn to do it in a fun and healthy way.

About Kelvin

I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str

ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

I have a Masters Degree in Music Performance from DePaul University School of Music and I have been teaching lessons since 2015. I can teach students at all levels of ability. As a freelance musician I have performed with the Chicago Clarinet Ensemble, The Chicago Composers Forum, Wheaton Municpal Band and other ensembles. I think there are two important parts of taking clarinet lessons: learning the fundamentals, and having lots of fun. I focus on basics like embouchure, air, and tone to help you develop good technique. I will also work with you to select music that you like and that you will be excited to play. I look forward to meeting you and working wit

About J. Erick

(hablo español)
I play clarinet and bass clarinet. I have a Bachelor of Music from the University of Florida, a performance diploma from Boston Conservatory, and currently working on a Master of Music at DePaul University.

I have worked with several local wind ensembles and orchestras such as the Boston Civic Symphony and groups at MIT. During my time in Florida I performed with Ars Flores Symphony, Alhambra Orchestra, Frost Clarinet Choir, and the Miami Music Project.

My approach to the clarinet is goal-oriented and focused on making the practicing process easy and fun for the students. I prefer to discuss the goals openly with the student, and then come up with bite size chunks of practice to reach those goals over time. Playing music is like playing a sport; there are a lot of skills to be learned but the results are gratifying

and far reaching.

I encourage my students to use time-saving methods like ClassicalFingers (finger training) as well as endurance building exercises with simple items like straws and a wall.

My main concentrations are orchestral, chamber music, and contemporary music. I will help the student prepare for All-State, Solo/Ensemble, or their wind band/orchestra/audition repertoire. I also will bring duets to help the student learn to play along with others and improve sight-reading ability.

About Candace

Hello!
I started private violin lessons myself when I was nine, after begging my parents for two years to let me try. They finally caved, and I was in love!
I learned through the Suzuki Method until completion when I was 14, then I moved on to more difficult repertoire. I took lessons all through high school and eventually graduated from college with a Bachelor's of Music degree in violin performance.
My teaching philosophy has always been that anyone, child or adult, can learn to play an instrument. It isn't so much talent as it is hard work! Throughout the years, I've grown to realize that not everyone learns the same way, and so I have continuously tailored my teaching approach to each individual student and I challenge them based on what their goals are.
My favorite part about teaching is watching a student's face light up when they'v

e been struggling through something and it suddenly clicks. It's the most beautiful thing, and so satisfying! When a student of mine realizes that they can make music, and that their hard work has paid off to make good music, that's when the magic happens, and they unlock so much potential.
This inspires me to keep doing what I love, and I hope to share it with as many people as possible!

"Andrew is a talented musician and a skilled teacher. He can pick up pretty much any kind of stringed instrument and just start playing it! His passion for
music makes lessons a lot of fun. I was surprised how quickly I could start playing! His style is a healthy combination of drills and actual playing, so you get the technique but don't get bored or frustrated because you're still learning how to play little melodies. He's very good at explaining things in several different terms depending on your technical background. His explanations of technique and theory have helped me understand music in new ways. You will love working with Andrew and improve your skill level no matter what your musical background."
