Flute lessons focus on posture, breath control, theory, and performance in all genres of music.

About Loretta

I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style. I am currently preparing to complete my certificat

ion in music therapy. Those who can do teach, and those who can teach totally do!

*** Lesson Details ***
You will set the pace for your lesson. I want you to enjoy your time in music, so your lessons will be completely customized. We will develop a goal plan for you so that our time together is interesting, fun, and we make progress! In 3-6 months, you will have a stable technical program and have started a portfolio of music for performances, no matter what level you are. We can share sheet music in person or online (I can even email you great links to amazing performances). Just let me know where you want to be in music, and we'll work together to make it happen. I can't wait to meet you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
First - YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT FOR PRACTICE AT HOME BEFORE BEGINNING LESSONS!!! Consistency is very important for learning, and weekly lessons ARE NOT enough for growth. My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. My studio includes a 88-key keyboard, technology setup with an iMac, microphone and stand, a mirror for posture and musical instruments. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. Feel free to bring any additional equipment music you would like to share. I have some great recommendations for music books designed for both children and adult learners.

*** Specialties ***
jazz, contemporary, classical (instrumental), original, computer music composition

Private Flute Teacher
About Daniel

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro

ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Customized approach to the individual based on needs and goals.

It was only a first lesson but I can already tell I'm going to be taking more lessons with Daniel. He's very knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated. He detailed a specific plan for me to work on that isn't too rigid or boring, I'm looking forward to relearning the flute with him.

I have taught Flute and Recorder over a decade in both personal and classroom settings. Several of my students have gone on to achieve gold medals in their solo and ensemble contests, and place within the IMA music competition.

Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play a stronger, more supported sound and as time goes on you'll be able to expand your range beyond what you thought possible. I specialize in working with beginners, and have experience working with students new to braces, as well. Typically, I use the Rubank Flute Method book in addition to your school's band books.

As far as what age to start flute, I am firm in starting a student no earlier than the spring/summer before their 4th grade year of schooling. This is not to say that a child could not begin learning music earlier, but the arm length required to play flute is necessary to achieve success.

For recorders, I use various method books and pull from many additional pop song books as well. ...

About Kristin

Let's get you started on your musical path! My name is Kristin, and I cannot wait to begin this journey into music with you. I have been teaching private lessons for nearly a decade, and have taught music and choir in the classroom since 2011. I specialize in working with beginners of all ages.

Music has been my passion for my entire life. From singing to playing in band and everything in between, I ultimately achieved my degree in Music Education. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in the top ten of my class from VanderCook College of Music.

Private Flute Teacher

Flute is the original out-in-the-country instrument. It charms everyone's ear and is the most noble of all instruments, save for the violin.

About Jon

Jon N. was born and raised in Mexico City and is proudly an American citizen. He has been performing since the age of three, on several instruments, studying music since fourteen, and still takes lessons to this day. What's not to love?

He is proud to teach at all levels, including many professional musicians with master’s degrees, adult beginners, and of course, kids of all ages between 8 and 75.

They are encouraged to select the music they want to learn, so we have worked on classical music and original compositions, which I also coach, jazz, blues, pop, rock, the Great American Songbook, reggae, seven different kinds of Jewish music, and other ethnic music from all over the globe.

Frequently the younger students will request a tune I've never heard, but I magically transform the MP3 into a handwritten score at the student's l

evel. Example, one of my adult beginners wanted to play the big symphonic poem Scheherazade, and I wrote out the main tunes for easy piano.

I'm writing this only after the first lesson. Before my son was so frustrated with the flute he even hated the idea of taking lessons. I told him we'll try it and see how he feels after the class. Michael is patient, encouraging and knowledgable. He corrected my son's playing and tuned his flute. Most of all he gave my son confidence. My son told me I hit the bulls eye with my selection of his teacher. He said he can't wait to go next week! When watching I thought they were going quickly but my son seemed to catch on just as quick. I think Michael is aware of his pace and adjust to his students level. His location is isolated and idea for one on one teaching. There was plenty of parking and his location is easy to find.

TL;DR: Sign up now. Do it! Mr. Hoover is talented, professional, attentive, punctual, organized and effective.

I've taken music lessons my entire life, and I've had bad, mediocre, good and excellent teachers before. Mr. Hoover is excellent. It _never_ once felt like he was phoning it in or killing time-- lessons were well-structured and tailored to help me achieve my personal goals as a musician.

I'm moving away from Chicago for a new job opportunity and am sad to discontinue lessons with him, as I learned a lot in a very short amount of time. I encourage any folks at any age wishing to learn the flute to sign up.

Michael was an excellent flute teacher for my 5th-grade daughter!

He's very patient and calm, which is critical for new learners, and gave my daughter a lot of confidence in her ability to play the flute.

I highly recommend Michael!

I can already sense that my boys are going to have a great learning experience with Isaiah. He caught on to each child’s strengths and areas of growth in the content as well as behavioral differences. He adjusted to each one fluidly and took the time to debrief after the lesson. I’m looking forward to continuing this relationship.

Private Flute Teacher

From first lesson through advanced high school students, I focus on quality of tone production and musicality.

About Hunter

My primary teaching philosophy revolves around the ideas of creativity and cooperative problem solving. I believe that all musicians should be actively training their ears as well as their abilities on their instrument. I focus on all elements of basic musicianship while incorporating improvisation and composition in an inspiring way.

I grew up playing jazz, soul, R&B, folk, reggae, ska, funk, and classical music. I feel very comfortable working within all of these genres in both performance and educational atmospheres.

Regardless of age, learning a new instrument or art form can be daunting, so I like to include some sort of entertaining activities to keep tension low and inspiration high.

Private Flute Teacher

I work with the student to develop a curriculum based on their musical interests and my own teaching pedagogy. I strongly feel that for young musicians to own their education, they must have a say in what they play. Assigning method books and mindless etudes to practice doesn't have nearly the same effect asking them "Ok, what kind of music do YOU like? What do you want to PLAY? What do you want to LEARN?".

I believe that students learn best when they are invested in a subject, and the best way to get them invested is to individually get to know each one, speak to them on their level, and get them playing music they're interested in.

About Jon

I'm a professional performer, educator, and recording artist. I received my Masters in Music from New Mexico State University, and my BA and BMA from the College of Wooster in Ohio.

Students can expect to improve their technique and performing repertoire within a matter of weeks. We will collaborate to find music that he or she is interested in, plus work on exercises that will build technique and sound quality. It doesn’t matter WHAT you’re playing, but HOW you play it.

I’ve been a musician for over 20 years and played in a wide variety of settings. In lessons, I’ll draw from that experience to help students achieve their musical goals.

As a performing artist, I’ve played in classic big bands, small jazz combos, and R&B style horn sections, just to name a few. I’m passionate about classical music, jazz, R&B, and funk, but good

technique is good technique, and a proficient musician should and can jump from one style to another with ease.

"I had the privilege of having Drew as my private flute teacher for the 2015-2016 school year, and I would have loved to remain his student if he hadn't mo

I improved in so many areas in a short period of time, including overall tone, physical technique, performance psychology, practice habits, and applying musicality to my performance. Easily the best teacher I've ever had."

"My 12 year old daughter has been taking flute lessons for one year with Heidi and she loves her and has learned so much. The progress she has made in the
year is amazing. Heidi has a wonderful demeanor with her, she is patient yet challenges her. She tailors her lessons to what she is doing in her middle school bands and also uses outside resources. Heidi is clearly a very accomplished musician and her passion and enthusiasm for the flute is passed on to her students. This is definitely a quality to have in a teacher for this age group. The online class is so convenient and Heidi is very tech savvy and assists myself and my daughter in this area as well when needed. Heidi is very dependable and flexible if a lesson has to be changed. I highly recommend Heidi as a flute teacher, we couldn't be happier with our experience with her."

"Heidi is an amazing and effective flute teacher!

As an adult flute player, I am thrilled to have discovered Heidi. From the first lesson, I realized she
is an excellent flute teacher who goes above and beyond during each lesson, making every second count. Heidi is patient, flexible, organized, professional, and fun to work with. I believe Heidi is a RARE find as she is an exceedingly effective teacher. She listens attentively and finds just the right solutions to each flute playing issue. As a result she has helped me develop a new posture, better tone, and improved technical skills. We have been utilizing Skype for my lessons and this arrangement has worked out particularly well. Additionally, Heidi goes the extra mile and then one step more! For example, after a lesson she makes an audio recording of her playing the current technical exercise and music piece, including both parts to flute duets and then emails them to me. This is especially helpful as it is like having Heidi with me during my daily practice sessions. It is evident that Heidi is passionate about teaching flute. Additionally, she is a pleasure to work with! With the highest endorsement, I recommend Heidi for teaching flute."
