Teresa R.

Rochester, NY

About Teresa

After a 20 year professional career as a classical singer living in Europe, I have returned to the United States where I am a Music Director and private vocal instructor and coach. I teach students of all ages both in my home, through Skype, and at student's location. I have taught voice at the Eastman School of Music Community Education Department, Roberts Wesleyan College, and have adjudicated vocal competitions. I have helped students to secure leads in musicals, win competitions, be admitted into music schools and have successful solo careers both here and in Europe.

I love teaching voice. It is wonderful to discover the true voice within someone through lessons. I take the time to really understand my students and their individual needs. I gently nurture and give encouragement. I teach the basics in tone production and breathing. Musicality and diction are a very high priority in my studio. I can cover the basics in music if these skills are lacking. I can teach various genres of music believing that a good, solid vocal technique can be applied to any kind of singing. I am also very patient and kind and know what it's like to entrust your instrument, a part of you, in someone else's care. I like to look at my lessons as a journey not only to the goal of healthy, free singing but to a student's self-discovery as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a separate room in my home with a grand piano within a large space and nice acoustics.

*** Travel Equipment ***
A piano or keyboard on site is helpful.

*** Specialties ***
After a 30 year professional career as a classical singer, I do specialize in opera but I have also performed in the Broadway, jazz and pop genres as well. I believe good healthy singing can take you far and prepare you for any genre.

Learned a lot

Teresa is a teriffic teacher and takes a lot of pride in her work. She took her time with me and introduced me to a new way of delivery and breathing that helped with my speed and articulation. Teresa introduced new items to each lesson that made it a constant learning experience. Teresa is not only patient, but pleasant and I will be continuing my lessons with her this summer for my "tune up".

Laudon S.

Rochester, NY

About Laudon

When I first heard my dad play "Blackbird," I was hooked. I borrowed my little brother's guitar and started teaching myself from some old Hal Leonard books. There was something so exhilarating about making a piece of wood produce beautiful sounds. Soon I was taking lessons on electric guitar, playing Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. My teacher at the time pushed me toward classical guitar and I starting attending evening classes at the local community college when I was in high school. I fell in love with making music and decided to make it my career. I earned my Bachelor's of Music from Arizona
State University, studying under Frank Koonce. During my first few years there, I focused on technique and commissioning new works for the guitar, while exploring the vast repertoire of music available.

The summer before my senior year, Frank asked me take a look at an edition he was doing for Mel Bay and asked if I would like to help him with it. It was all sixteenth century vihuela and lute music. I spent the summer learning to read old tablature systems and even bought t a cheap lute. Lute music had me entranced and I decided I had to learn to play the instrument. I cut my nails off, and started practicing lute for 6 hours a day, in the hopes of auditioning for a Master's program at one of the few schools that offer them. Luckily, I passed my audition and was admitted into the Eastman School of Music, where I earned my Early Music MM and DMA studying under Paul O'Dette.

Though early music is my focus, I am constantly exploring new musical avenues. I've performed in folk duos, improvisation bands, and composed new works for lute and guitar. I've also coached singers, string players, wind players, and co-directed a staged opera. My goal is to use my diverse musical background to help my students in every way possible.

I am here to help you meet your goals! In nine years of teaching, I have taught students who just want to have fun and learn to play guitar, aspiring professionals, and professional musicians. I will tailor my teaching style to your specific needs and will always keep them in mind as we progress. Generally, I use Frederick Noad's "Solo Guitar Playing, vol. I" for classical students and students looking to focus on technique and Hal Leonard's "Guitar Method: Complete Edition" for folk, country, and pop. For students looking to learn play lute or theorbo, I will create a program dependent on the specific period and instrument you are interested in.

In 3 to 6 months you can expect to be able to read music, have a comfortable knowledge of first position on the fingerboard, and a grasp of several techniques that will help you toward your playing goals. Of course, I like to remind my students that a music teacher functions like a coach, we are here to help you and guide you, but the speed of progress is dependent on the practice you put in!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in designated lessons room

*** Travel Equipment ***
I ask that my students have an instrument (guitar, lute, theorbo), a music stand, and the text or method that we have decided to use.

*** Specialties ***
My degrees are in classical guitar and early music. My early music instruments are lute (Renaissance) and theorbo (continuo). In addition, I have played and taught bluegrass, country, and folk. I am also comfortable teaching electric guitar up to an intermediate level.

Guitar Lessons

It is with great pleasure that I recommend Laudon as a guitar instructor. I have had the privilege of studying with him for a year and have been most impressed by his knowledge of music theory, technique and performance. Laudon has crafted a lesson strategy that ensures that I will reach my personal artistic goals as quickly as possible. He listens carefully to my questions and answers them by using visual references that enhance my understanding of challenging concepts. Not only does Laudon share his expansive knowledge of music in a relaxed, comfortable manner to students of all ages and walks of life, he does so with warmth and humor. It would be impossible to find a better musical mentor and coach. In sci-fi terms, the force is strong with him!

I always start with warm ups for both piano and voice students. I believe musicians are like delicate athletes, who use their fingers/vocal cords to make beautiful sound out of an instrument or a body. It is important to understand to warm up before practice/lesson for their own benefits to keep techniques fresh and healthy.

(For Piano students, scales, little warm up style finger exercises/for voice students, easy scales and vowel exercises, stretching registers)

Then, we tackle the fun stuff (more traditional practices) and after that, I encourage students to bring me or play/sing for me what they love. I love working something different with student who also has passion for different genres of music like light jazz, gospel, pop..etc. I value my students' opinion and encourage them to explore other things to develop themselves as unique, creative musicians.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Piano or Keyboard

*** Specialties ***
I start with traditional classic music training. Basic theories, ear training, aural skills with all of my students.

I believe Basic understanding of music is important to everyone.
I specialize mainly in classical, however I am open to anything students want to learn.
