John M.

Rochester, NY

About John

John is an Organist, Harpsichordist, and Pianist just completed a Master's degree at the Eastman School of Music in the organ studio of William Porter. He graduated from Eastman with a Bachelor of Music in Organ and Historical Keyboards in 2011 as a student of David Higgs. At Eastman, he has also studied the pedal clavichord and piano technique with Ulrika Davidsson.

As an instructor, John firmly believes that private, one on one music instruction should be tailored to each individual student. His pedagogical approach is different for each student. Everyone learns differently. There is
just not one way to learn to play an instrument. At the first lesson there will be a discussion on the students goals and interests and different methods of teaching will be discussed with the student (and parents) to decide what the best step forward will be.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are different for each student. The way a lesson is conducted depends on many circumstances. Depending on the goals and age of the student, one can expect lessons to guide a student to achieve the goals which will be discussed in the first few lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Baldwin Grand Piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
Piano for Piano Lessons
Organ for Organ Lessons
Music Theory Lessons or Tutoring: Staff Paper and Pencils

*** Specialties ***
Piano: Depending on the Age, Ability, Personality, and Ear, I have used "Adventures in Piano," the Alfred Method, and the Thompson Method. I supplement all of these books with pieces and exercises that the students express interest in.

Highly recommended

I have known John for the last 7 years. He is an excellent musician, a brilliant organist, and a very thoughtful teacher. We have often played for each other and his comments and suggestions are always insightful. In addition to his musical gifts, John’s wonderful personality and sense of humor make him a great colleague and friend.

Khanh N.

Rochester, NY

About Khanh

As a student of the Eastman School of Music, I receive some of the best training in music education and saxophone performance in the world. I have performed as a soloist with youth orchestras and in many Eastman ensembles.

I have taught privately and in classroom settings, and am comfortable with both.
I teach beginning-advanced saxophone, beginning-intermediate clarinet, beginning voice, entry-level percussion, and entry-level trumpet. I also tutor music theory and ear training at a high school-college level.

I am very energetic and enthusiastic, and I love nothing other than to help m
y students discover the gift of music: the gift that keeps giving. I almost never get frustrated with my students and will always do my best to help them succeed in whatever they need.

IMPORTANT: I am only in California until July 31; any lessons after that will be through Skype.

Beverly T.

Farmington, NY

About Beverly

I believe in inspiring long term results in students through constructive feedback and a healthy and strong technique to serve as a solid foundation for any musical style. I enjoy sharing my love of music and watching students progress in both their musical development as well as their appreciation for music.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Brigham Young University. I have experience teaching voice as well as advanced sight singing to students with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences pr
ivately and in group settings. In addition, I have played the piano for over ten years.

I am an extremely enthusiastic and dedicated teacher, and I go out of my way to ensure that my students receive the tools they need to take their abilities to the next level and achieve their goals. For me, the focus is entirely on the student and what I need to do to help their development.

Beverly has helped me more than any other instructor I've ever had. I felt she really cared about me as an individual and did everything she could to help my vocal skills improve. With her help, I was able to expand my vocal range, improve breathing technique, and overcome confidence issues.
Beverly is an amazing teacher and I would recommend her to anyone.

I just had my first lesson with Brett and he customized it according to my individual needs and circumstance. I am passionate about guitar and folk music but have no musical experience. Bretts plan is to start with the very basics and move forward from there. He was very patient with me and his directions were easy to follow. Though I am a senior I feel like I am 20 years old again and learning a new skill. Thanks Brett

Matthew C.

Rochester, NY

About Matthew

I have over 17 years of joyous experience teaching all sorts of students from beginning to advanced guitar, songwriting, audio engineering, and music theory. I’ve been Professor of Guitar at Darton State College, and on faculty at Bainbridge College, Finger Lakes Community College, and Palmer Trinity School. I've performed in classical, folk, singer-songwriter, and jazz outfits for over 15 years, in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to coffee shops. My most recent CD is a project of original songs and compositions called "Vapor Trail from a Paper Plane", and was called a "Masterpiece" by Ameri
cana legend Grant Peeples, and No Depression raved “[the] pure emotive quality of Cochran’s music pulls you into its embrace and empties your heart with every sigh…artfulness in composition is almost a trademark of Cochran’s work.” I have a doctorate in guitar from Florida State University, and a Master's and Bachelor's in Guitar from the Eastman School of Music.

Matt was my first real guitar teacher after several years of self-instruction. Since I've studied with Matt, I've continued my studies at the University level and participated in masterclasses with world-class teachers. Still, when I think of an effective teacher, Matt is always the first to come to mind. He's got a wide knowledge base that allows him to appeal to every student, and is such a relaxed and approachable guy. When learning guitar from Matt, one also learns about performance etiquette, professionalism, and music in general. Matt is both a great musician and a fantastic teacher; working with him is a heck of an opportunity!

Matt was the first real guitar teacher I had ever had. Getting the chance to learn from him was an incredible experience. I was already a guitar player but not a classical guitarist. He took me from being a normal guitarist and turned me into a passionate musician. I can honestly say that he is the reason I continue to pursue music and study where I do now. I will forever be thankful for his teaching, support, mentorship, and friendship. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to pursue music.

I must say that Matt is the greatest teacher I could have asked for.

I had a brain injury back in 2006 and had to endure 4 months of therapy in effort to learn to walk, talk, and live again. I had major problems with my right hand and the therapy I went through greatly helped with some of my problems.

But, when I returned home and eventually was able to return to school it was then that Matt arrived at Darton and became the guitar instructor that would teach me. Matt was hard on me and even made me leave when I came to class unprepared. That was one time. I never came unprepared after that.

He taught me not just how to play great, but he also taught me how to be a studious student which made me into a better guitar player. Matt changed the way I practiced, changed my study habits for other classes, and makes me want to strive to be as good a guitar-player as he (if only I had my own classical guitar).

You will find NO better man for this position than Matt and it is my great, great honor to leave this message to tell how great of a teacher he is.
