James P.

Petaluma, CA

About James

I've played keyboards and sang professionally for the last 25 years. During that time my home has been in the San Francisco Bay Area but I have performed all over the country and have toured several times in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. I’m a two time winner of the West Coast Songwriters “Song Of The Year Award” and I write music and lyrics as well as record and produce songs for myself and others.

Over those years I've developed a wealth of knowledge and experience that I’m very excited to share with my students. I want you to tell me what your musical dreams are and we will develop
a plan to reach them and I will be honored to guide you there.

*** Lesson Details ***
I see music lessons as a partnership between the instructor and the student. I like to start this partnership by helping each student clarify their goals. Then we can proceed to plan our path to the stated goals. This plan will of necessity be unique to each student.

Obviously, expectations for the lessons would depend on the student’s starting point but I would say that for a child piano student who is just beginning, it would be reasonable to expect that within 3-6 months they would be able to play songs by reading the music. These would include some songs of their own choosing as well as some that I might recommend. For adult piano students, although reading is highly encouraged, our goals might take us in a different direction.

For songwriting students, we might choose to forego working at the piano entirely and instead take our lessons into my recording studio. It all depends on our goals and the path that we choose to get there. We might spend an entire lesson on lyrics. But I really like to see a student leave each lesson with some concrete progress on their song, and preferably with it documented on a recording. Depending on the level of the student, after 3-6 months I anticipate that we would have at least a few songs written and demoed.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room: 2 vertical pianos

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide a piano or appropriate keyboard in a well lit room. I would also expect a bench and music stand.
I could provide a digital recorder and a metronome.

*** Specialties ***
blues, jazz, pop and rock

Jimmy is a great teacher

I have been taking lessons once every week from Jimmy for over a year and I haven't ever been disappointed by a lesson we've had. My favorite part of the lesson is always when we do the blues together at the very end. Overall, Jimmy is a great teacher.

Roxanne M.

Rohnert Park, CA

About Roxanne

Bachelor of Music, Master of Music Degrees from S.F. Conservatory.
Soloist with San Francisco Symphony at age 12, Denver Symphony, Oakland Symphony. First place winner of Young Musicians Foundation, North American Young Artists Competition, played with Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, accompanist for Irving Klein Competition, Coach at Kirkwood Chamber Music Workshop, adjudicator for many competitions. 35 years experience teaching all levels. Students have won competitions and performed at Carnegie Hall.

I believe having the proper foundation to learning is the key to making learning much less
challenging, and fun as well. I believe strongly in learning by doing, and not just imitating. As we use different senses when learning piano, one component to learning is to read music without looking down at the keys, so as to become adept at playing by feel, just like a blind pianist does. This makes a fair sight-reader a great sight-reader. Teaching a child or adult to develop that all important critical ear is extremely important to me, so that they can learn to trust their own musical sense, with or without an instructor. It does not come right away, but with patience and persistence, it is attainable. Being an avid chamber music performer myself, playing duets or in larger ensembles is one of the greatest ways to learn to listen, not only to oneself, but being able to blend in with other musicians.
I am committed to instilling good habits from the very beginning with my students, teaching them note reading, sight reading, theory, technique, and teaching them how to practice, not just how long to practice. I am a disciplined teacher, but also teach with humor as well. I also love to incorporate imagination, having the student think of colors, textures, scenery, or making up stories about the music they are playing. It makes a world of difference in how they play.
I have been on the piano faculty of Santa Rosa Junior College.
I also taught piano for 13 years at the Nueva Center for Learning in California, San Domenico Conservatory, as well as giving master classes throughout the United States and Canada.

Roxanne M's Music Studio

“To play without passion is inexcusable!”
– Beethoven

My lessons are 30/45/60 minutes once a week.

The focus of each lesson is based on technique, theory, diverse repertoire, that will fit the student's needs and wants, sight-reading, ear training, and working in ensembles

*** Specialties ***
I teach mainly classical piano, and love to teach not only solo playing, but chamber music and accompanying as well. Each form uses the ear in different ways, and I believe develops listening ability even greater.

Roxanne is a true professional. She is calm, patient and encouraging. Music theory is a part of every lesson helping to gain the knowledge of how music is put together. Roxanne is realistic about the level of music you should be playing, while encouraging you to stretch. She has a solution for every problem area that you may encounter. I would highly recommend Roxanne.

Music Theory · In studio
I came to Roxanne with the hope of deepening my understanding of music. I had played the clarinet in various ensemble for decades and yet had a fairly weak grasp of how music is structured and how compositions make sense musically. Fortunately, this is exactly Roxanne's main strength, for me anyway. Along with learning to play piano, I am gaining more and more insight into "music theory" and that is helping me become a more rounded and capable musician. I commend Roxanne to anyone with an interested in a deeper understanding of music as well as gaining proficient keyboard skills.

Giorgia G.

Rohnert Park, CA

About Giorgia

I started my solo and backup singer career at the age of 12, working for RG Recording Studio (Italy). When I was 15 I founded a children's choir (ages 5 to 15) called Voci di Pace. I trained them as soloists and as an ensemble, as well as conducted them through the professional recording of dozens of CDs, such as: https://play.spotify.com/album/07WSECpRIw9aub1hpbIqLe. I also trained and conducted students for the recording of highschool musicals such as: https://play.spotify.com/album/44FrC6GPgFYNDyjD6fbMS3.

I began my conservatory bachelor degree training in cello and chamber music in 1997
, and graduated 2010. Since then, I have studied singing technique with pop star Silvia Mezzanotte (www.silviamezzanotte.com) and with opera singers Chiara Fiorani and Noa Frenkel.

I love to teach singing, singing in Italian and Italian diction to students of all ages and backgrounds who are ready to explore their own souls and bodies and to learn how to be themselves through sound and music.

Giorgia is an awesome teacher! I was nervous about singing in front of people, but Giorgia creates a comfortable environment and makes every lesson informative and fun. I have a much better understanding of the fundamentals of singing and I feel more confident. Unfortunately I am moving out of the area, otherwise I would definitely continue lessons!

Giorgia was my first teacher in singing when I was just 8 years old. Since then she has always been a model for me: her talent, her competence, her determination really impressed me. She is able to teach very delicate and complexed topics with genuine irony letting your hair down. I strongly recomend her as a teacher, and I will always thank her for letting me able to apreciate at best music.

Giorgia is amazing! She has an incredible ability to make you feel safe to be vulnerable and open. I was very shy with my voice and Giorgia was the very first person to be able to make me sing in front of another person. She takes you through the basics and explains very constructively how things work. I can recommend her to anyone who is wanting to discover their voice!
